Documents you still bring to a passport-free car hire

• Passport: carried as identification, not left behind — you show it and keep it.
• Home driving licence: the licence from your own country, valid for the whole hire.
• International Driving Permit: required under the 1949 Geneva Convention unless you hold an ASEAN national licence.
• Bank card in the main driver's name: the card that carries the security hold, agreed when booking.
• Minimum driver age: 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.

Driving without the permit costs ฿500–1,000 at a police stop, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident — a risk that runs well past the price of the booking itself. Carry the permit with the licence, not in a suitcase.

Longer bookings and what they cost per day

Weekly rates start from ฿4,500 and monthly from ฿15,750. Weekly is the daily rate times six, monthly is the daily rate times twenty-one, so a longer booking lowers the cost of each day. The exact rate for your dates, and whether a weekly or monthly rate applies to them, is agreed with a manager when booking.

Which model fits your trip on the island

Suzuki Swift at ฿750 per day and Honda Brio at ฿800 per day suit two people with hand luggage; both are 5-seat hatchbacks with a 1.2 L petrol engine and automatic transmission. Toyota Avanza at ฿1,200 per day carries seven, and Honda BR-V at ฿1,500 per day does the same with 121 hp against 104. Isuzu MU-X at ฿1,700 per day is a 7-seat diesel with rear-wheel drive, and Isuzu D-Max at ฿1,300 per day is the pickup for luggage that will not fit in a boot. For electric, BYD Dolphin starts at ฿850 per day, GWM Ora Good Cat at ฿900 per day, and Tesla Model 3 at ฿1,500 per day. Pick the class by the number of people and bags, not by the price tag: two Economy cars for a family of five cost more per day than one 7-seat minivan from ฿1,200, and only one of them has to be parked. The island's ring road runs 51 km around the coast and links Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam, so a compact hatchback covers the whole circuit comfortably.

Delivery and booking of your passport-free car rental

We deliver the car to any address on Koh Samui and to Samui International Airport (USM). The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed; a delivery fee, if any, is agreed when booking. Nothing about the hand-over relies on your passport sitting in a drawer somewhere — the document stays with you from the moment the car arrives.

What happens when the car arrives

The car comes clean with a full tank, and rental is available from 1 day. Minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement.

One practical note on timing: the Raja Ferry crossing from Donsak to Lipa Noi runs every hour from 05:00 to 19:00, 15 sailings in each direction, and 05:00–06:00 and 12:00–16:00 are the peak windows when a filled boat gets an extra sailing. If you are arriving by ferry rather than by plane, give the manager your sailing time and the delivery slot gets built around it instead of the other way round.

Speed, alcohol and the fines that follow you home

The posted limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas and 90–120 km/h outside them, and a police fine for driving without an International Driving Permit runs ฿500–1,000. Drink-driving starts at 50 mg% in the blood — 20 mg% for drivers under 20 or on temporary licences — and the penalty reaches up to a year in prison, a ฿5,000–20,000 fine, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months; refusing the breath test counts as an admission. Children under six must ride in a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a restraint or a special seat, with fines up to ฿2,000. Seatbelts are compulsory for every passenger, including the rear row.

Where you may not drive

• Beaches and jungle tracks: the rental agreement prohibits off-road and beach driving — the sand and the trails are closed to our cars, whatever a local guide suggests.
• Red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs: parking against either colour is a fine; one island operator quotes ฿500, but treat the exact sum as set out in the rental agreement rather than a fixed tariff.
• Without an IDP: never drive on your home licence alone unless you hold an ASEAN national licence — an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident.

Insurance and hand-over in a passport-free car rental

Every car we rent carries compulsory motor insurance, known as Por Ror Bor, and the security hold is taken from a bank card rather than from your passport.

What a passport-free car rental does not cover

A passport-free car rental on Koh Samui removes the passport from the deposit equation — it does not remove the driver's legal and financial obligations. The security hold still sits on a bank card in the main driver's name, and what that hold does not absorb is set out in the rental agreement you sign with us.

What the security hold leaves to you

• Insurance excess: the amount you pay towards damage to the car before Class 1 cover responds; the figure is set out in the rental agreement.
• Parking penalties: a car left at a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb can be fined, and the fine is re-invoiced to the renter.

Taking the car off the island

Most rental companies on Koh Samui do not permit their cars to leave the island by ferry — a breakdown or an accident on the mainland is expensive to recover. If a mainland trip is part of your plan, raise it at booking rather than at Lipa Noi pier. The delivery address, the date and the time of hand-over are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, and anything the agreement does not spell out is agreed when booking — not assumed at the kerb.

Trip scenarios for car rental without leaving your passport on Koh Samui

The car you pick should follow the trip, not the other way round: a couple landing for a week at Chaweng and a family of five doing the island loop for a fortnight need different classes, and both can be booked without leaving a passport as a deposit. Below are four common scenarios, and what each one actually costs per day.

A week between Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut

Suzuki Swift at ฿750 per day and Honda Brio at ฿800 per day cover this ground easily — both are 5-seat petrol hatchbacks, automatic, front-wheel drive, and the run between Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut sits entirely on the 51 km ring road. A weekly booking starts from ฿4,500, which is the daily rate times six. Fill up before the return leg — the car goes back with the tank as it arrived, and fuel is paid in cash at most island stations.

A fortnight with a family and luggage

Airport arrival and the first afternoon

Samui International Airport (USM) sits in Bophut, about 2 km north of Chaweng, and we deliver to the airport as well as to any address on the island — the address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed. If you arrive by ferry at Lipa Noi instead, give the manager your sailing time and the delivery slot is built around it.
