The T-Cross pairs its automatic with a 1.0 L, 110 hp petrol engine and five seats; the Touran combines its automatic with a 1.5 L, 150 hp petrol engine and seven seats, which makes it the only seven-seater here that shifts for itself. Both are front-wheel drive. If an automatic is a firm requirement rather than a preference, book it early: only two of the seven models fit that.

The Costa Brava is a string of resorts rather than one city, and that changes what a hire car is for. From GRO the run to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km and 37 minutes, to Palafrugell 54.4 km, to Roses 75.2 km — three different holidays, one airport. If your flight lands late, say so when you book — the hand-over time is agreed with the manager, not printed on a board.

Speed limits, tolls and low-emission zones are the three things that decide how a Volkswagen hire car here actually drives. All of the rules below are easy to plan around once you know the numbers.

Speed Limits You Will Meet on Costa Brava Roads

• Autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33): 120 km/h for passenger cars, motorcycles and camper vans up to 3,500 kg.
• Carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260 and similar): 90 km/h unless the road owner raises it to 100 km/h.
• Town streets with one lane each way: 30 km/h; a municipality can raise this to 50 km/h with a separate sign.
• Town streets with two or more lanes each way: 50 km/h, and bus or transit lanes do not count towards the total.
• Single-platform streets where pavement and roadway are level: 20 km/h.

Tolls, Low-Emission Zones and Parking

The AP-7 corridor from Vila-seca to La Jonquera, which covers the whole run to the French border, has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme between Montgat and Palafolls lost its barriers on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021 — that is the route from Barcelona-El Prat to Lloret de Mar and Blanes. The C-33 Barcelona–Montmeló is also free. Paid motorways remain only on the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 towards Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges 8.42 € and Cubelles 5.03 € in category 2; none of those sit on a Costa Brava route.

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025. It covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, and it operates 7–20, Monday to Friday on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted, with a 24-day annual allowance inside the restricted hours. Cameras read number plates, so there is no sticker to display, and foreign plates can be granted a temporary permit if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car from us is not affected by the restriction.

Parking in Girona's zona blava runs Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13 and 16–20, at 1.20 €/h with a two-hour maximum (2.40 €); the Sant Narcís area keeps different hours. Lloret de Mar adds the Can Lloranes car park at roughly 15 €/day from 23 June to 11 September and free the rest of the time, plus the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride with 200 spaces, free for stays over 12 hours, including a free bus ticket into the centre between 15 June and 15 September.

Fuel, Fines and the Practical Bits

Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 EUR/l across the province of Girona, with a median of 1.979, a minimum of 1.718 and a maximum of 2.122 across 250 filling stations; the coastal strip averages 1.956. Diesel (Gasóleo A) averages 1.922 EUR/l in the province and 1.932 on the coast, which matters if you take the Caddy Maxi. Our cars leave with a full tank and come back full — full-to-full, or lleno-lleno in Spanish — and any missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee is charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Speeding fines follow the DGT table: 100 EUR with no points, 300 EUR with 2 points, 400 EUR with 4, 500 EUR with 6, and 600 EUR for the most serious band. Going more than 60 km/h over the limit in town, or 80 km/h outside it, turns the matter criminal rather than administrative. Alcohol limits are 0.25 mg/l of breath for most drivers and 0.15 mg/l for those in their first two years, with anything above 0.60 mg/l a criminal offence. A phone held in the hand costs 200 EUR and 6 points; seat belts and child seats cost 200 EUR and 4 points, and child restraints are required for anyone under 135 cm tall. Fines carry a 50% discount if paid within 20 calendar days — worth knowing before you hand the car back and fly home.

The rules below cover driving licences, the IDP question, insurance, the fuel policy and what happens on the road; anything not settled here — the deposit, the excess, delivery fees and discounts — is set out in the agreement you receive when booking.

Which Driving Licence You Need

• EU/EEA licences: valid in Spain exactly as issued, with no extra document required while they remain in force.
• Non-EU licences: the DGT advises obtaining an International Driving Permit before you travel and carrying it together with your passport and your national licence.
• Permiso Internacional de Conducción: a supplementary document shown only alongside your passport and national licence, valid for one year, issued as a grey triptych booklet with sixteen pages in Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian.
• Licences not in Spanish: valid either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if issued under the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention — for Cyrillic, Arabic and character-based scripts this in practice means an IDP or a certified translation.
• Residency: six months after you take up ordinary residence in Spain, a third-country licence stops being valid and must be exchanged.

Insurance on Your Volkswagen

Third-party cover is part of every hire by Spanish law and applies whenever the car is driven, even by someone not named in the agreement; it covers injury to others up to 70,000,000 EUR per incident and property damage up to 15,000,000 EUR, but not the driver and not the car itself. Child seats are compulsory for children under 135 cm, and holding a phone while driving brings 200 EUR and up to six points. A car is not a luxury on this stretch of coast — it is how the region connects. The airport sits 12.5 km south-west of Girona, and from there Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km away, Palafrugell 54.4 km and Roses 75.2 km.

The Trips That Justify a Volkswagen

• Airport to resort with luggage: GRO to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km and 37 minutes by road; the same run to Roses is 75.2 km and 63 minutes.
• A day at Cap de Creus: access to the Far de Cap de Creus road is time-limited — in June on the 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th and 20th–30th, and daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September.
• Inland villages: Pals and Peratallada, Besalú and the Garrotxa volcanic zone, Figueres — none of these are a short walk from a beach hotel.

But be honest about the other side. Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona operates from 15.09.2025, Monday to Friday, 7:00–20:00, on working days, inside the ring from la Devesa to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted, with 24 days a year of leniency. Rental cars in Spain carry the badge, so a Volkswagen from us is not affected — but a car without one is.

Parking is the second cost to weigh. Girona's zona blava runs 1.20 €/h with a two-hour maximum (2.40 €) on working days, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00. In Lloret de Mar, the Can Lloranes car park charges about 15 €/day from 23 June to 11 September and is free the rest of the time, while the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride is free for stays over 12 hours and throws in a bus ticket to the centre. If you stay outside the old towns and drive in, the fuel and parking bill is real but predictable.
