What is not in the price

Two things decide whether your paperwork holds up on the drive north: the licence you carry and the insurance attached to the car.

What you need in the car

• ASEAN nationals: a national licence from an ASEAN country is enough — no permit needed.
• Passport: carried with you, not left in the hotel safe.
• Bank card: in the main driver's name, used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
• Age: minimum 21, with conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes set out in the agreement.

Driving without a permit is not a formality: an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident. Keep the licence and permit within reach of the driver's seat rather than in the boot.

Rules that matter on the road north

Traffic keeps to the left and every car we hand over is right-hand drive — the mirror image of most visitors' home roads, which is why the first hour out of the city deserves full attention. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways and 110 km/h on the expressways.

Children under 6 must travel in a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a belt or a dedicated seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000. Every passenger buckles up, including the back row. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited, and camera fines on the motorway are issued to the car owner — us — then re-invoiced to the renter under the agreement.
