Comfort is four cars — Skoda Scala at €35, then Ford Focus, Opel Astra and Renault Megane at €36 — all 5-seat hatchbacks with 110–140 hp.

Automatic, hybrid and five-seat options

• Automatic: Hyundai i10 (€25/day), Skoda Fabia (€28) and Toyota Yaris Hybrid (€30) are the three automatics on this page — the rest of the 24 are manual.
• Hybrid: Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda at €24/day, plus the Yaris Hybrid at €30 — all three are 1.0–1.5 L, front-wheel drive.

What the manager confirms and what is agreed later

The deposit, the insurance excess, any delivery fee and any discount are set out in the rental agreement and are not quoted before that document is drawn up. The minimum age, the young-driver surcharge and the cards accepted are agreed when booking, not stated on this page. A week of self-drive motoring here is mostly a fuel-and-parking budget, not a toll budget. The AP-7 corridor from the French border down through Girona has been free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme and C-33 Montmeló barriers came down the same night. On the routes a weekly hire actually uses, you pay for petrol and for the hours your car stands still.

What fuel costs and which grade to take

• Petrol 95 E5: averages 1.94 EUR/l across the province of Girona, with a median of 1.979 and a range of 1.718 to 2.122.
• Petrol 98 E5: averages 2.106 EUR/l provincially, median 2.129, between 1.898 and 2.289.
• Diesel (Gasóleo A): averages 1.922 EUR/l, median 1.959, from 1.718 to 2.089.
• Where to fill: 250 stations sell 95 across the province, 152 sell 98, 266 sell diesel; along the coast the count is 58, 36 and 59.
• Coastal premium: seaside 95 averages 1.956 against 1.94 across the province — under two cents a litre, so fill where it is convenient, not where it is cheapest.

The full-to-full rule decides the rest: the car leaves with a full tank and comes back with one, and the last fill belongs close to the return point, not at the first station you pass after leaving the coast road.

Tolls on a week of coastal driving

The C-32 south carries a barrier at Vallcarca of 8.42 € and one at Cubelles of 5.03 €, category 2 — neither sits on a route a week here is built around. Catalonia keeps discussing a return to charging for fast roads, by vignette or by use, but no decision exists, so plan the week as toll-free and keep the small change for parking instead.

Parking: the part that actually costs

• Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at 1.20 €/h capped at two hours (2.40 €); the hours differ around Sant Narcís.
• Girona, zona verda: non-residents pay the same 1.20 €/h for a two-hour maximum; Pedreres–Vista Alegre runs Monday–Friday 9:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 plus Saturday 9:30–13:00, while Güell–Devesa runs Monday–Saturday 8:00–20:00.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces at roughly 15 €/day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries: 200 park-and-ride spaces, free for stays over 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre, from 15 June to 15 September.

Licence rules for a week behind the wheel

An EU or EEA licence, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, is fully valid in Spain while it has not expired, and no international driving permit is needed alongside it. A licence from outside the EU or EEA is valid too, provided it is in force and you are old enough for the equivalent category. The DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip, and it is presented only together with your passport and your national licence — never on its own. If your licence is not written in Spanish, it counts either with an official certified translation into Spanish or if it was issued on the Appendix 9 Geneva or Appendix 6 Vienna model. A grey permit booklet is valid for one year and carries 16 pages in Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian.

Cover on a weekly booking

• Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil: compulsory third-party cover that comes with every booking by Spanish law and applies at all times, even if someone not named in the agreement was driving.
• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): an option that removes your liability for damage to the car after a collision with another vehicle or an object, minus the excess.
• THW (Theft Protection): covers full or partial theft and vandalism damage, again minus the excess.
• Franquicia: the excess you pay yourself on damage; it is printed in the rental agreement.

The legal minimums behind the compulsory cover are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury, however many people are hurt, and 15,000,000 EUR per incident for property damage.

• Lloret de Mar: 34.6 km from GRO, 37 minutes on the C-63 and A-2 — the closest resort run, easy to pair with a morning swim and an afternoon back at your apartment.
• Cap de Creus: beyond Cadaqués — the lighthouse road, where access is restricted on set dates (daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September), so check the calendar before you commit.
