Before you collect the keys, two things decide whether the hand-over goes smoothly: the paperwork you bring and the rules you drive by.

Passport, driving licence and when you need an IDP

We ask for a passport and a valid driving licence; if the licence has no Latin or Cyrillic script, an IDP or a notarised translation is needed. Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, so a foreign licence is recognised here — you do not exchange it for a local one. A foreign licence is valid for up to one year from the date you entered Georgia. The minimum age, the young-driver surcharge and the cards accepted are agreed when booking, not stated here.

Speed limits, seat belts and the rules that catch visitors out

The limits are straightforward: 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them for category B, and 110 km/h on motorways. In a residential zone the limit drops to 20 km/h. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory by law. A phone is only allowed through a headset or speakerphone, with both hands on the wheel. Children under 3 must ride in the back in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, and a child under 6 may not be left alone in a parked car. The alcohol limit is 0.3 per mille. On the S3 to Kazbegi and Gudauri the mountain sections close at the Jvari pass (2,379 m) when avalanche risk is high — all-wheel drive does not replace checking the road before you set off.

Parking and fuel in the city

Street parking is zonal: the first 15 minutes are free, then from 1 GEL per hour, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or at a terminal. Underground car parks in the centre are an alternative — Freedom Square runs around 2–3 GEL per hour, Rike about 7 GEL per day. Petrol was 4.06 GEL per litre and diesel 4.76 GEL per litre on 21.09.2026, with diesel roughly 17% dearer. The Q7 takes petrol, and our rule is full-to-full: the car comes with a full tank and goes back full, otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. Fill up before you return the car rather than hunting for a station after the drop-off — the fee is not worth the detour.

Winter tyres are compulsory in Georgia from 1 December to 1 March, and in zones designated by the government, in particular weather conditions, chains on at least the two front wheels are required. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m by the pass and its season runs from early December to mid-April, so a ski trip in the Q7 falls squarely inside the tyre rule. Fuel for the run is petrol: at the last recorded prices, 4.06 lari a litre for petrol against 4.76 for diesel, and the round trip from Freedom Square to Gudauri and back is about 242 km.

Insurance and what is covered on Audi car rental in Tbilisi

Insurance is the part of an Audi rental where the paperwork matters more than the badge on the grille. Compulsory third-party cover does not exist for owners of Georgian-registered cars yet: the government put its introduction into the autumn legislative work plan, with no date named. A car hired here carries Georgian plates, so the compulsory insurance rule for foreign-registered vehicles does not apply to it. What you actually drive on is the optional cover the company sells — CDW or Super CDW — and the terms of that cover are set out in your rental agreement, not in a brochure.

Third-party cover, CDW and Super CDW

• Third-party liability: not yet mandatory for owners of Georgian-registered cars; the government has scheduled its introduction but has named no date.
• CDW: collision damage waiver offered as an option; it limits your exposure to damage to the car itself.
• Excess: the amount you remain liable for after a claim; it is set out in the rental agreement and agreed when booking.
• Theft of personal belongings: not covered by standard insurance — take your own policy if you travel with camera gear or laptops.

What the insurance does not settle for you

Cover on the car is not cover on your driving. Speed limits in Georgia are 60 km/h in built-up areas and 20 km/h in residential zones; outside built-up areas a category B car may do 90 km/h, and 110 km/h on a motorway. Trips towards Armenia on an Audi car rental in Tbilisi

Georgia's land border with Armenia is open, but a self-drive rental on this page is a car for Georgia: the Q7 crosses into Armenia only with our driver, and that trip is agreed with the manager when booking. The main crossing is Sadakhlo–Bagratashen, roughly 80 km south of the capital (70 km to Sadakhlo by road); the second is Ninotsminda–Bavra. The whole run to Yerevan is about 280 km, 4–5 hours including the border.

• Self-drive: the Q7 is driven within Georgia; the territory is set out in the rental agreement.
• A trip to Armenia: only with our driver, agreed with the manager when booking.
• Insurance: Georgian insurance does not apply in Armenia.
