The Captur adds a higher seating position and a larger boot on the same mechanical package, so it takes a family of four with hand luggage. Both come with a manual gearbox only — if you need an automatic, look at the 5 E-Tech or the Espace instead.

Plan a top-up the way you would plan fuel: the network is dense in L'Eixample and Poblenou, thinner in the hills.

Driving into the low-emission zone

• ZBE Rondes BCN: the Zona de Bajas Emisiones Rondas de Barcelona covers more than 95 km² — the whole municipality except the Zona Franca industrial area and the Vallvidrera – el Tibidabo i les Planes neighbourhood, plus L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and parts of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat.

What to have ready when the car arrives

Spanish rules on documents are the same for every hire, whatever the model. A driving licence issued in the EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway included) is fully valid here while it has not expired, and no international permit is needed. A licence from outside that group is valid if it is still in force, if the holder meets the Spanish age for the equivalent category, and if less than six months have passed since they took up ordinary residence in Spain; the DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip. A licence not written in Spanish is accepted either with an official sworn translation or if it was issued on the Appendix 9 or Appendix 6 model of the Geneva and Vienna conventions — the international permit is the alternative to a translation. It is a supplementary document: it is shown only together with the passport and the national licence, and it runs for one year.

The passport or ID card must be the original and in the name of the main driver. The card used for the deposit is agreed when booking, and so is the minimum age and driving experience for the class you have chosen — neither is a figure on this page. • EU/EEA licence: fully valid in Spain until its expiry date, with no extra paperwork and no international permit required.
• Third-country licence: valid for driving here if it is in force and you are old enough for the equivalent category — after six months of taking up ordinary residence in Spain, exchange it.
• Non-Spanish wording: either carry an official certified translation into Spanish, or hold a licence issued on the Appendix 9 Geneva or Appendix 6 Vienna model.
• Permiso Internacional de Conducción: a supplementary document shown only together with your passport and national licence; it runs for one year.
• Passport or ID: the original in the main driver's name — companies ask for it, though the DGT sets no single rule.
• Bank card: which cards are accepted, and the deposit behind them, is set out in the rental agreement.

Speed limits and what a fine costs

Spanish limits are posted in kilometres per hour: 120 on the autopista and autovía, 90 on an ordinary rural road — the road owner may raise that to 100 — and 50 in town where there are two or more lanes in one direction. A single-platform street shared with pedestrians drops to 20, and a one-lane-each-way street to 30, which the municipality can lift to 50 by sign. On the Rondes B-10 and B-20, motorway-standard roads inside the built-up area, 80 is the general ceiling unless a sign says otherwise. Speeding penalties follow the DGT table: 100 EUR with no points, then 300 EUR and 2 points, 400 EUR and 4, 500 EUR and 6, up to 600 EUR and 6 as muy grave. Above 60 km/h over the limit in town, or 80 km/h outside it, the matter stops being administrative. Pay within 20 calendar days and the fine drops by 50%.

Alcohol, phones, seat belts and child seats

• Alcohol: 0.25 mg/l of breath is the general limit, 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professionals, and above 0.60 mg/l it is a criminal offence.
• Alcohol and drugs penalty: 500–1000 EUR and 4–6 points; any presence of drugs in the body is grounds for sanction on its own.
• Phone at the wheel: 200 EUR and 3–6 points — holding the handset in your hand costs the full 6.
• Seat belts, helmets and child seats: 200 EUR and 4 points; the driver answers for a child without a restraint.
• Child seats (SRI): compulsory for children under 135 cm in height; from 135 cm, and under twelve years old, the standard belt is allowed.

Winter tyres are not a seasonal requirement in Spain — restrictions appear point by point on signs and gantries when it snows, which for trips out of the city means the mountain roads inland towards the Pyrenees, the C-16 and the Túnel del Cadí. Parking is paid in the blue zones, AREA Blava A at 2.5 EUR an hour and AREA Blava B at 2.25 EUR an hour, so keep the comprovant d'estacionament with the registration number matching the car. In practice a family of four fits any of the three; the Captur simply swallows a folded pushchair or two large cases that would fill the Clio boot to the parcel shelf. On a week's hire the Captur costs more than the Clio, which is worth paying if you plan day trips out of the city with the boot loaded.

Seven and nine seats, and the automatic question

The Espace is the only seven-seat option, a Hybrid MPV with an automatic gearbox and 200 hp, and the Trafic is the only nine-seater, a Diesel van with a manual and 150 hp. Both are automatics or manuals in a way that decides the booking: the Espace is automatic, the Trafic is not, so a driver who wants two pedals and seven seats has one choice on this page. A group of five or six in the Espace leaves the third row folded and gains a boot that takes everyone's cases; fill all seven seats and that space disappears. Ask for the seat count you actually need when the booking is agreed — arriving with one more passenger than the car carries cannot be fixed at the kerb.

Child seats and the practical side

Child restraint rules in Spain are set by height, not age: an SRI is required for children below 135 cm, and from 135 cm a standard belt is allowed. The Espace and Trafic are the widest cars on the page, so three child seats across the second row are realistic there and tight in the Clio or Captur. And a seven-seat MPV with the third row up has almost no boot left — if you are collecting a family at the airport, send the luggage in the larger car and the passengers in the smaller one, or take the Trafic and stop counting.

Spanish consumer rules give you a clear position here, and it is worth knowing it before you pick up the keys rather than after. If the replacement sits a class below what you agreed, the price has to come down to match.
