The class you book does not change with the length of the hire — only the effective day rate does.

Fuel and tolls on longer automatic routes

• Full-to-full fuel: we supply the car with a full tank and you return it full (lleno-lleno in Spain); otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.
• Petrol 95 E5: the provincial average across Girona stands at €1.94 per litre, with 250 filling stations in the province and 58 along the coast.
• Diesel (Gasóleo A): the provincial average is €1.922 per litre, with 266 stations in the province and 59 on the coast.
• AP-7 corridor: the whole Barcelona — Girona — border stretch has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme barriers came down the same night.
• Remaining tolls: only the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 keep barriers — neither sits on a Costa Brava route.

Beyond Cadaqués, the road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus is closed to cars at set hours in season — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September, so check the calendar before you commit to that leg. For a longer loop, the drive over to Collioure crosses the border and uses 8.4 km of the A 9.

Driving rules for automatic car rental in Costa Brava

Speed limits, the low-emission zone in Girona and the child-seat rule are the three things worth knowing. Here is what applies to the automatic cars we hand over along this coast, and what stays the same whatever vehicle you take.

Speed limits you will actually meet

On the AP-7, the A-2, the C-32 and the C-33 the limit is 120 km/h. In town the picture splits three ways: a single-platform street where carriageway and pavement are one level is 20 km/h, a street with one lane each way is 30 km/h, and a street with two or more lanes in one direction is 50 km/h, with bus and transit lanes left out of the count. A municipality can lift a 30 km/h street to 50 km/h by sign. Speeding is graded by the pair of posted limit and actual speed: 100 EUR with no points at the bottom, then 300 EUR and 2 points, 400 EUR and 4 points, 500 EUR and 6 points, up to 600 EUR and 6 points. Above 60 km/h over the limit in town, or 80 km/h outside it, the matter stops being an administrative fine.

Girona's low-emission zone and the DGT sticker

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025 and covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and the Barri Vell. It runs 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental sticker that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; there is a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours without a permit, cameras read plates rather than stickers, and a foreign-registered car that meets the technical and environmental requirements can get a temporary permit. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT sticker, so a car from us has no restriction in the zone. If you plan a morning in Girona, keep the Barri Vell for a weekday before 7 or after 20 and you avoid the question entirely.

Alcohol, phones, seat belts and child seats

• Alcohol: the general limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, but 0.15 mg/l applies to drivers in their first two years and to professional drivers; above 0.60 mg/l it is a criminal offence, and the fine band runs 500–1000 EUR with 4–6 points.
• Phone: 200 EUR and 3–6 points, and holding the phone in your hand takes the full 6 points.
• Seat belt and helmet: 200 EUR and 4 points.
• Child restraints (SRI): required for children below 135 cm, and the driver carries the responsibility — ask for the child seat when the booking is agreed, not on the day.
• Red lights and STOP signs: 200 EUR and 4 points.
• Fast payment: a 50% reduction applies if a fine is paid within 20 calendar days.

One practical note: treat the 90 km/h coastal roads with as much care as the motorway.

Two things worth checking before you drive away. The first is the fuel rule — the car is supplied with a full tank and must come back full; anything else is charged as set out in the rental agreement. The second is the Girona low-emission zone, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, which has been in force since 15.09.2025 and runs 7–20 on weekdays. Cars without a DGT environmental badge and not registered in Girona are the ones restricted there; the Spanish fleet carries the badge, so a hire car is not affected. If you plan a day in Girona rather than the coast, that is the detail that decides whether you drive in or park outside.
