Short hops around town

Errands, cafés and meetings across town without waiting for a taxi. A light scooter is easy to handle in traffic and needs little space to park.

Day trips out of town

Viewpoints, villages and quiet roads beyond the centre. A larger engine keeps pace on faster roads and carries a passenger more comfortably.

Scooters on Koh Samui: Prices, Models and Riding Rules

Fleet manager
Published Updated

Scooter rental in Koh Samui starts at ฿150 a day for a Honda Scoopy 110 or a Yamaha Fino 125, and the 29 models here run up to ฿2,000 for the X-ADV 750 and Forza 750; the median is ฿300. A week can cost six daily rates. Riders need a motorcycle licence, an International Driving Permit and two helmets.

What a day costs, from 110 cc to 750 cc

Engine size explains most of the gap between the cheapest and the dearest machine on the island. The 29 models fall into five engine classes, and neighbouring classes barely overlap in price.

530–750 cc4฿1,490–2,000Yamaha TMAX 530, TMAX 560, Honda Forza 750, X-ADV 750

Where the price steps up

Up to 160 cc, the whole spread is ฿150 to ฿500 a day, and 21 of the 29 models on this Rent-Trip page sit in that band. The median across all models is ฿300 — the price of a Click 160 or an NMAX 155. Above that, the cheapest 300 cc machine, the Honda Forza 300 at ฿400, costs as much as an ADV 160; the Forza 350 at ฿700 is more than double a Click 160. Then comes the real jump: the Yamaha TMAX 530 at ฿1,490 costs nearly twice the ฿800 Honda ADV 350. For everyday scooter rental in Koh Samui, the useful choice is between 125 and 160 cc: the step from a ฿250 Click 125i to a ฿300 Click 160 or NMAX is only ฿50 a day — a small price for two riders on hilly roads.

One model, several prices

The price on each model card is the lowest daily rate for a short rental of one to six days, and other shops on the island ask more for the same machine. A Honda Scoopy 110 starts at ฿150, yet several shops charge ฿200 or ฿250 for it. A Honda Forza 300 ranges from ฿400 to ฿800 a day, so the dearest offer is twice the cheapest. At the top end, the Honda X-ADV 750 starts at ฿2,000 and is offered at ฿2,500 to ฿2,700 by other shops. The spread is wide even for identical machines. The practical rule: compare offers on one model and one set of dates, never "a 150 cc scooter" against "a Forza", or the comparison means little.

Click, PCX, NMAX or ADV: matching the model to the ride

Four families cover most rentals in the 125 to 160 cc range. Honda accounts for 17 of the 29 models and Yamaha for 10; the other two are a GPX Drone 150 and a Malaguti Madison 150, at ฿500 each.

Previous generations for less

A Honda PCX 150 costs ฿300 a day, against ฿450 for the current PCX 160 — the same family for a third less. The pattern repeats elsewhere. The older Honda Click 150i starts at ฿250, ฿50 below the Click 160, and the Yamaha TMAX 530 at ฿1,490 undercuts the TMAX 560 by ฿310 a day. The Honda ADV 150 is the exception: at ฿400 it costs the same as the newer ADV 160, so the newer model is the better deal there. If a quote names only "PCX" or "Click", ask which engine size it means, because the difference on the PCX alone is ฿150 a day, or ฿900 over a six-day rental.

Retro, hybrid and small runabouts

The two cheapest models on the island are small: the Yamaha Fino 125 and the Honda Scoopy 110, both from ฿150 a day. Around them sits a cluster of 125 cc runabouts — the Honda Zoomer-X, the Yamaha QBIX and the Yamaha Fazzio at ฿200 each, then the Yamaha Filano and the Grand Filano Hybrid at ฿250. The Fazzio and the Grand Filano are hybrids, priced like any other 125 cc automatic. The Honda Lead 125 at ฿250 has a flat floor and a large storage box, handy for shopping bags. The retro Honda Giorno+ is the dearest of the group at ฿350. Not every machine offered under moped rental in Koh Samui is an automatic, though: the Honda Wave 110 at ฿250 is a semi-automatic, with gears changed by foot. If you have only ridden automatics, pick something else.

The big scooters, 300 to 750 cc

Eight models sit above 160 cc, from ฿400 a day for the Honda Forza 300 to ฿2,000 for the Honda X-ADV 750 and the Forza 750. In the middle are the Yamaha XMAX 300 at ฿500, the Honda Forza 350 at ฿700 and the ADV 350 at ฿800. The two Yamaha TMAX models come next: the 530 at ฿1,490 and the 560 at ฿1,800. Between shops, the spread for these machines is wider than for small scooters — the XMAX 300 runs from ฿500 to ฿800, the TMAX 560 from ฿1,800 to ฿2,000. A big scooter is worth it for long rides with luggage and a passenger, but over a week a ฿1,800 TMAX 560 costs ฿10,500 more than a ฿300 NMAX. Get at least two quotes for the exact model before you decide.

Weekly and monthly terms

The length of the rental changes the daily price more than the choice between two similar models. Weekly and monthly rates follow their own arithmetic, and it differs from shop to shop.

Day, week and month at one delivery service

Honda Scoopy 110฿250฿900฿3,000

Honda ADV 160฿500฿3,000฿10,000
Honda ADV 350฿1,000฿6,000฿20,000

Six days for a week, twenty for a month

On four of these six models, a week costs exactly six daily rates and a month twenty: ฿1,500 and ฿5,000 for the Click 125i at ฿250 a day, ฿2,100 and ฿7,000 for the NMAX at ฿350. A week thus buys one free day. The two 110 cc models break the rule. Their week is ฿900, or 3.6 daily rates, and their month is ฿3,000 for the Scoopy and ฿2,800 for the Wave. For monthly scooter rental in Koh Samui on a tight budget, that Wave works out to about ฿93 a day. Across the island, a 125 cc scooter usually costs ฿900 to ฿1,800 for seven days and ฿2,000 to ฿4,000 for thirty, so the ฿1,500 week for the Click sits in the upper half of that range and the ฿900 week for the Scoopy at its bottom.

Seven-day steps and discounts

Some shops cut the daily rate once a rental reaches seven days. One shop charges ฿450 a day for an ADV 160 for one to six days and ฿420 from the seventh; the PCX 150 and the Aerox 155 drop from ฿350 to ฿300 on the same terms. Seven-day discounts elsewhere show a similar cut: a Yamaha Filano falls from ฿324 to ฿264 a day, an XMAX 300 from ฿780 to ฿624, and an X-ADV 750 from ฿3,360 to ฿3,000. Monthly rates vary even more: the same NMAX costs ฿4,500 a month at one shop and ฿7,000 at the delivery service above. When you plan six days, ask for the seven-day price too — it may come out lower in total.

Licence, IDP and helmets

Rental shops and riding guides on the island describe the same requirements. The rules apply to every machine on this page, from a ฿150 Scoopy to a ฿2,000 X-ADV.

Which documents a rider needs

To rent a scooter in Koh Samui and ride it legally, a foreign rider carries two documents: a motorcycle licence from the home country and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle "A" endorsement. Citizens of ASEAN countries are exempt from the permit requirement. The category matters more than the paper itself — a permit without the "A" endorsement does not cover a scooter of any size, whether it is a 110 cc Honda Wave or a 745 cc X-ADV. What counts is what a police officer at a checkpoint or an insurer after an accident will check, not what the shop asked for at the counter. Look at the categories on your licence and permit before you travel, because an IDP is issued in your home country, not on the island.

Fines for the two most common offences

OffenceFineIn Click 125i rental days
Riding without an IDP฿500–1,0002 to 4 days
No helmet, rider or passengerup to ฿2,000up to 8 days

Checkpoints on the Chaweng and Lamai approaches

The island runs regular police checkpoints, and they are often set up on the roads into Chaweng and Lamai. These are also the two areas with the largest number of rental shops, so a rider who picks up a scooter there is likely to pass a checkpoint within the first days. The helmet rule is the one an officer sees from the roadside: under Section 122 of the Land Traffic Act, both the rider and the passenger must wear one, and the fine is up to ฿2,000. Missing the permit costs ฿500 to ฿1,000 on top. With a passenger, that means two helmets, both fastened, on every trip — including the short ride to a beach. Ask for the second helmet when you book rather than at the handover, and check that its strap closes properly.

When travel insurance may not pay

Riding without a valid International Driving Permit can void a travel-insurance payout after an accident. That is the larger cost of a missing document: a roadside fine is counted in hundreds of baht, while a refused claim after a fall leaves hospital and repair bills with the rider. The risk is the same on a small 125 cc automatic as on a big maxi-scooter, because the requirement depends on the type of vehicle, not on its engine size or price. Before the trip, read your policy for the conditions it sets on motorbikes and scooters, and check that it accepts the documents you will actually carry. If your licence has no motorcycle category, a taxi or a car hire on a car licence is the safer plan for getting around.

Deposit, passport and delivery

The daily rate is only part of the money that changes hands. The deposit, what happens to your passport and how the scooter reaches you also shape the final cost of a rental.

Cash deposit and a passport copy

For a 125 cc scooter, a cash deposit of ฿500 to ฿3,000 is the usual arrangement on Samui, together with a copy of the passport. Terms differ between shops, though. Some deliver free of charge, take no deposit at all and leave the passport with the rider. A photocopy is enough to identify a renter, so the original document has no reason to stay in a drawer at the shop for the length of the rental. If a shop insists on holding the original passport, treat that as a reason to compare other offers — a copy is the common practice on the island, and you may need the passport yourself for check-in or currency exchange.

When the deposit is larger than the rent

On a short rental the deposit can easily exceed the rent itself. Two days on a Honda Click 125i at ฿250 cost ฿500, while the cash held for the same scooter can reach ฿3,000 — six times the rent. That money comes back only after the return inspection, and any damage found at the return comes out of it. On a monthly rental the balance changes: ฿3,000 against a ฿5,000 month is a smaller share of the total. Ask how the deposit is held, in which currency, and when exactly it is returned. Keep the receipt for the deposit together with the rental agreement, because without it, proving how much you paid at the start becomes a matter of memory.

At the handover

  • Photos: photograph the scooter from all four sides, including the odometer and existing scratches, and send the pictures to yourself.
  • Helmets: check two helmets if you ride with a passenger, and make sure both straps fasten properly.
  • Fuel: note the fuel level at pick-up and agree on the level expected at the return.
  • Terms: confirm the daily rate, the term it applies to and the price of an extra day.
  • Deposit: get the amount, the form of payment and the return conditions on paper.

Where to pick up, and when the rain comes

Rental shops cluster on the east coast, but scooters can be picked up around the whole island. The weather matters as much as the location: the rainy months change how and when it makes sense to ride.

Chaweng and Lamai

Chaweng and Lamai have the highest concentration of scooter shops on Samui, which makes them the easiest places to compare several offers on foot. In Chaweng the usual daily rate is ฿250 to ฿350, while the island-wide range for a Honda Click 125 runs from ฿140 to ฿350 — so the busiest beach is not the cheapest place to rent. Walking from shop to shop also makes it easy to compare the weekly and monthly offers described above for the same model. Remember the checkpoints on the approaches to both towns: ride out of the shop with the helmet on and the documents in your pocket, not in the hotel safe.

Bophut, Maenam, Nathon and Lipa Noi

Beyond the two big beaches, scooters are also handed out in Bophut and Maenam on the north coast, in Nathon and in Lipa Noi on the west side. Nathon is where the Seatran ferries arrive, so a rider coming from the mainland can pick up a scooter right after landing instead of taking a taxi across the island. Some shops deliver to hotels and villas free of charge, which removes the need to reach a shop at all. When you compare two offers, compare the total for your dates, delivery included, rather than the daily rate alone. For a stay on the north or west coast, a local pick-up also saves the ride back from Chaweng at the end of the rental.

October to December on two wheels

Samui's wettest months are roughly October to December, with the peak in November at about 445 mm of rain. In those weeks, roads stay wet for hours after a downpour, and the hill roads between the beaches turn slippery. A lighter 125 cc automatic is easier to control on wet tarmac than a heavy maxi-scooter, and it is cheaper to repair after a slip. There is no reliable figure for when demand peaks, so do not count on a seasonal discount. For a rental in the rainy months, choose a model with a storage box for a rain cover, allow extra time between beaches, and keep the photos from the handover until the deposit is back.

Key points before you book

Seven points cover what decides the price and the legal side of a rental on the island. Each one comes from the sections above, with the figures that matter.

The short version

  • Price: 29 models from ฿150 to ฿2,000 a day; the median is ฿300, and 21 models cost no more than ฿500.
  • Model: ask for the exact engine size, because a PCX 150 and a PCX 160 differ by ฿150 a day.
  • Term: a week can equal six daily rates and a month twenty; on six days, ask for the seven-day price.
  • Documents: a home motorcycle licence plus an IDP with the "A" endorsement; ASEAN citizens are exempt from the permit.
  • Helmets: two helmets with a passenger, fastened every time; the fine reaches ฿2,000.
  • Deposit: ฿500 to ฿3,000 in cash for a 125 cc scooter and a passport copy; the original passport stays with you.
  • Season: October to December is the wettest stretch, so a light 125 cc automatic is the sensible choice for wet roads.

FAQ

How much does scooter rental in Koh Samui cost?

Daily prices for the 29 models on this page start at ฿150 for the Honda Scoopy 110 and the Yamaha Fino 125 and go up to ฿2,000 for the Honda X-ADV 750 and Forza 750. The median is ฿300, and 21 of the 29 models cost no more than ฿500 a day. Each figure is the lowest daily rate for a rental of one to six days, so other shops may ask more for the same model.

How much is a scooter for a week or a month?

Across the island, a 125 cc scooter usually costs ฿900 to ฿1,800 for seven days and ฿2,000 to ฿4,000 for thirty. One delivery service charges ฿1,500 a week and ฿5,000 a month for a Honda Click 125i, which equals six and twenty daily rates, and ฿2,800 a month for a Honda Wave 110, about ฿93 a day. Other shops charge ฿4,500 a month for a Yamaha NMAX 155 or a Fino 125.

Do I need a licence and an International Driving Permit?

Yes. Foreign riders carry a motorcycle licence from their home country and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle "A" endorsement; citizens of ASEAN countries are exempt from the permit. Riding without the permit carries a fine of ฿500 to ฿1,000, and it can void a travel-insurance payout after an accident.

Does my passenger need a helmet?

Yes. Both the rider and the passenger must wear a helmet, and the fine reaches ฿2,000. That is eight days of rent for a ฿250 Honda Click 125i, so ask for two helmets when you book and check that both straps fasten.

How much deposit do scooter rentals take, and do they keep the passport?

For a 125 cc scooter, a cash deposit of ฿500 to ฿3,000 with a copy of the passport is the usual arrangement. Some shops take no deposit at all and leave the passport with the rider. On a two-day rental of a Click 125i, the ฿500 rent can be six times smaller than the deposit, so ask how and when the money is returned.

Where are the police checkpoints on Koh Samui?

The island runs regular checkpoints, often on the roads into Chaweng and Lamai. Both towns also have the largest number of rental shops, so carry the licence and the permit and wear the helmet from the first ride.

Where is the best place to rent a scooter on the island?

Chaweng and Lamai have the most shops, which makes comparing offers easy; in Chaweng the usual daily rate is ฿250 to ฿350. Scooters are also handed out in Bophut, Maenam, Lipa Noi and Nathon, where the Seatran ferries arrive. Some shops deliver to hotels and villas free of charge.

Is an older PCX 150 much cheaper than a PCX 160?

Yes: the PCX 150 starts at ฿300 a day and the PCX 160 at ฿450, so the older generation costs a third less. The Click 150i at ฿250 is ฿50 below the Click 160, and the Yamaha TMAX 530 at ฿1,490 is ฿310 below the TMAX 560. The Honda ADV 150 and ADV 160 both start at ฿400.

Can I ride a scooter on Samui in the rainy season?

Yes, but plan for wet roads. The wettest months are roughly October to December, with a peak in November at about 445 mm of rain. A light 125 cc automatic is easier to handle on wet tarmac than a heavy maxi-scooter, and it is cheaper to repair after a slip.
