Range Rover Sport and Defender 110 compared for a family trip
The Range Rover Sport seats 5 and costs €200 a day; the Defender 110 seats 7 and costs €370, and both run a 3.0 L Hybrid engine with 400 hp. Pay the €170-a-day difference for the seven-seater only if a seventh person actually travels with you every day of the trip — for a family of four or five, the Sport does the same job for less.
Is the Evoque Convertible practical for summer on this coast

A week is charged as six days and a month as twenty-one, so weekly hire starts at €1,200 and a month at €4,200. On the Evoque Convertible those same multipliers give €1,260 and €4,410; on the Defender 110, €2,220 and €7,770. The maths is the same for every model — the daily rate multiplied by six or by twenty-one, nothing added on top for the extra days.

Three or four days covers an arrival, a run along the coast and the return to the airport. A week costs six daily rates, so seven days cost the same as six. A month makes sense when you are staying put and driving out to the beaches and villages on your own schedule rather than booking transfers for each leg.

You tell us where you are staying — the name of the hotel, the street and number of a villa, the entrance of an apartment block — and we confirm the hand-over window that suits your arrival. Nothing is left to guesswork on the day: the address sits in the booking, the manager has it, and the car comes to that point. The useful detail is not the town but the exact gate. If your accommodation sits behind a barrier or on a pedestrian-only lane, say so when you book and we agree the nearest point a car can legally stop.
Picking up at the airport on arrival
We deliver to Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) and to Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). From there the coast is close: GRO to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km and about 37 minutes, GRO to Roses 75.2 km and about 63 minutes.
What we need from you before the car arrives
- Address: the exact street, number and any gate or barrier code for a villa or gated complex.
- Date and time: the window you want the car handed over, agreed with a manager in advance.
- Contact number: a number that works on the day, in case the driver needs to reach you.

Rules for Land Rover car rental in Costa Brava
Spain drives on the right, and every Land Rover in our fleet is left-hand drive, so a British or Irish licence holder sits on the side nearer the centre of the road. The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme barriers came down the same night, so hiring a Land Rover here no longer means budgeting for peajes on the main run north.
Low-emission zone, tolls and parking
- Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona: in force since 15.09.2025, 7:00–20:00, Monday to Friday on working days, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell.
- Who is restricted: cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona; cameras read number plates, so there is no sticker to display.
- Foreign plates: a temporary authorisation applies where the car meets the technical and environmental requirements.
- Rental cars: the Spanish rental fleet carries the DGT badge, so a car hired from us has no restriction in the zone.
- Tolls: AP-7, C-32 and C-33 are free; the only remaining paid roads run on the C-16 toward the Cadí and the C-32 south of Barcelona, neither of which sits on a Costa Brava route.
- Blue zone parking in Girona: Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00 (Sant Narcís differs), €1.20 per hour, two hours maximum (€2.40).
Fuel, and what a hybrid Land Rover actually burns
Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 EUR/l across the province of Girona and 1.956 EUR/l on the coast, with 250 filling stations in the province and 58 along the coast. Petrol 98 E5 runs at 2.106 EUR/l province-wide and 2.131 EUR/l coastal; diesel (Gasóleo A) sits at 1.922 EUR/l and 1.932 EUR/l respectively. We hand the car over with a full tank and expect it back full — full-to-full, lleno-lleno — otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.
What the road signs mean in practice
Speeding fines run from 100 EUR (no points) to 600 EUR with 6 points, and there is a 50% reduction for payment within 20 calendar days. Mobile phone use while driving is 200 EUR and 3–6 points — 6 if the phone was held in the hand — and seatbelt or child-seat offences are 200 EUR and 4 points. Child restraints (SRI) are mandatory for children up to 135 cm tall; from 135 cm the standard belt is allowed. Alcohol limits are 0.25 mg/l of breath, dropping to 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professional drivers, with anything above 0.60 mg/l a criminal offence rather than an administrative fine.

Coastal runs where the Defender 110 and Range Rover Sport feel at home
- Cadaqués to Cap de Creus: the lighthouse road is restricted by date from late March to 1 November — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September.
Airport transfers and the inland loop
The 89.4 km from Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Cadaqués takes around 80 minutes, 41.8 km of it on the AP-7, which has been toll-free since 01.09.2021. The same applies to the C-32 Maresme and the C-33 Barcelona–Montmeló: the barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021, so a Land Rover car rental in Costa Brava no longer carries a peaje on those corridors. From El Prat the run to Lloret de Mar is 89.6 km and about 75 minutes without traffic, using the C-32, C-31 and B-10.
For Collioure across the border, the route from Girona-Costa Brava Airport is 114.9 km, about 89 minutes, 71.4 km of it on the AP-7; where the car may be driven is agreed when booking.

Where the Evoque Convertible works and where it does not
The 4-seat Evoque Convertible is built for the Tossa de Mar and Platja d'Aro runs — short hops, sea air, an open roof in the early morning. Roof down on the GI-682 is a different experience from roof down on the AP-7. For a week that mixes coastal villages with the Garrotxa interior, the closed-body models are the more useful choice.
Parking and low-emission notes for longer routes
- Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday in working hours, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at 1.20 €/h with a two-hour maximum; the Sant Narcís area runs to a different schedule.
- Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces at roughly 15 €/day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window.
- Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries: 200 spaces, free for stays over 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre between 15 June and 15 September.

Documents, insurance and the rental agreement
What you need to drive in Spain
- EU/EEA licence: valid in Spain for as long as it has not expired, with nothing further required.
- Non-EU licence: DGT recommends an International Driving Permit before the trip, carried together with your passport and national licence.
- Non-Latin script: if your licence is in Cyrillic, Arabic or characters, it is valid only with an official translation or an IDP.
- Card for the deposit: which card is accepted is agreed when booking.
Insurance, the excess and the deposit
Every car legally on a Spanish road carries compulsory third-party insurance, and it is included by default: the legal limits are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage. On top of that, collision damage waiver and theft protection are options that reduce your liability down to a franquicia — the excess you pay yourself if the car is damaged. The deposit is the line worth checking, so ask what the preauthorisation will be before you sign.
Fuel, cleanliness and the hand-over
If you bring it back short, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the agreement. No other fuel option is offered. The car comes clean with a full tank. Inspect the bodywork with the person handing it over and make sure every scratch and dent is written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive away, with a copy left in your hands. That single habit decides who pays for a mark on the bumper three days later.

Spanish rental fleets carry the badge, so a car from us has no restriction there, and foreign plates can apply for temporary authorisation if the vehicle meets the technical and environmental requirements. The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona to the French border, the C-32 through Maresme and the C-33 have been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so a drive up the coast costs nothing in peajes. What does cost money is parking: Girona's zona blava runs 9:30–13 and 16–20 on working days at 1.20 EUR per hour with a two-hour cap, while Lloret de Mar's Can Lloranes car park charges about 15 EUR per day between 23 June and 11 September and is free the rest of the year.
