Is a 4x4 worth it on Koh Samui
You are not buying traction for trails. Off-road, beach and jungle-track driving is prohibited by the rental agreement — the 4x4 is for grip, not for trails.

How the trip length changes the maths
Two weeks is where the weekly multiplier really shows. Over a month the gap widens: ฿37,800 monthly versus ฿54,000 at the daily rate for the same Everest. The Ranger follows the identical pattern at ฿200 a day more: ฿12,000 a week, ฿42,000 a month.
Documents, licence and deposit for Ford car rental in Koh Samui
A foreign visitor driving here needs two documents at once: a home driving licence and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Thai law treats them as a pair — section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act. Citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence and do not need the permit.
The police fine for driving without an International Driving Permit is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident.

Insurance on a Thai-registered car starts with compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, which covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car. First-class insurance covers damage to the vehicle itself; its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it.

Left-hand traffic with a right-hand drive
Keep left at junctions and roundabouts, and let the kerb stay on your left shoulder. The ring road runs 51 km around the island and links the lowland to the coast, carrying every resort strip: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut, Maenam. Out of habit it is easy to drift right on an empty stretch — pick a lane marker and hold it. If you have never driven on the left, collect the car in daylight and do one quiet loop before you load passengers.

- Flooding: heavy rain leaves standing water and slick asphalt, worst from mid-October to early December, when the island takes its biggest rainfall of the year.
- Oil patches and animals: bin lorries leave oil patches, and animals wander onto the road.

Fill the tank before you return it, as the car is handed over full. Speed cameras issue fines to the registered owner and those are re-invoiced to the renter, so a heavy right foot costs twice.

Most rental companies here do not allow their cars to leave the island at all, because a breakdown or an accident on the mainland is expensive to resolve. Raja Ferry Port runs Don Sak to Lipa Noi in about 1 h 30 min, hourly from 05:00 to 19:00 in both directions, 15 sailings a day, with extra departures in the 05:00–06:00 and 12:00–16:00 peaks when the queue fills. Seatran Ferry also serves Nathon and Bang Rak and takes queue bookings for cars. The provincial tariff for a four-wheeled car, jeep, van or pickup is ฿640, a passenger ฿200 — the ferry is paid separately from your Ford car rental in Koh Samui and is not part of the rate.

What to settle before you confirm

Traffic-camera fines in Thailand are issued to the car owner, which means they reach us first and are re-invoiced to the renter named in the agreement. The same applies to parking penalties near a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb. A police fine for driving without an International Driving Permit runs ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim if the driver was not properly licensed at the time — so carry both your home licence and the permit, even on a short run to Chaweng.
