That is the honest answer to whether you need one: match the car to the road you will actually drive, not to the one on the poster. If your trip is Old Tbilisi and the airport road, a saloon is fine.

The weekly figure is the daily rate multiplied by six, the monthly figure is the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one, so a longer booking lowers the effective cost of each day without changing the car. The spread inside the class is wide: a Nissan Pathfinder at $69 and a Porsche Cayenne S at $250 sit in the same category, yet both come with the same all-wheel drivetrain and automatic gearbox. Sketch the route first and only then pick a model — a 5-seater may cover the whole trip.

What sits inside the price and what the agreement covers

The deposit, the insurance excess, delivery fees and any discounts are set out in the rental agreement, not in the daily rate shown on this page. Four lines in that document decide your final bill, and none of them appear in the headline figure: the deposit held against the car, the excess you carry if the bodywork is damaged, whether a delivery to your address carries a fee, and any discount applied to the booking. Fuel is the one item with a fixed rule — the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank, and anything missing is charged with a refuelling service fee as set out in the agreement. No pre-paid tank or full-to-empty option is offered.

The routes that justify all-wheel drive

• Gudauri in winter: the resort sits at 2,200 m by the Jvari Pass, 121 km from Freedom Square, and winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March.

What actually matters on those roads

The Jvari Pass closes under avalanche risk, so build a spare half-day into any Kazbegi plan rather than a tight schedule.

When a saloon is the better answer

Our own rule of thumb: count the days off the sealed road, and if that number is two or more, take the all-wheel-drive car.

Winter driving in Georgia with SUV & 4x4 car rental in Tbilisi

What you drive changes what you can reach between December and April, and it changes what you are legally required to have on your wheels.

Winter tyres and chains: what the law actually requires

Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-designated zones during specific weather conditions you need chains on at least two front wheels. We supply all-wheel drive across the class, and the automatic gearbox means you are not juggling a clutch on a gradient. If you are booking a mountain week, tell the manager where you are going — the car is matched to the route, and the delivery address, date and time are agreed before the booking is fixed.

Where winter actually closes the road

The Georgian Military Highway, the S3, runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, and its highest point is the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. Gudauri itself sits at 2,200 m by the pass, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from the capital, and its season runs from the start of December to mid-April.

Fuel, parking and the small winter costs

A full-to-full fuel policy applies: the car comes clean with a full tank and must go back the same way, otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. Petrol sits at ₾4.06 a litre and diesel at ₾4.76, so a mountain loop of 300–400 km is a real line in the budget. Parking in the city is zonal and costs from ₾1 an hour after the first 15 free minutes, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or a terminal; an unpaid session is fined ₾50.

What we agree with you before the booking is fixed

The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager. That conversation is where the practical details get settled: which entrance the driver should look for, whether you want the car waiting when you land or a few hours later, and how to reach us if your flight is delayed.

The car arrives clean and with a full tank. It goes back the same way — full-to-full. If the tank is not full on return, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Why this matters more here than in a rental hall

Land in the evening, take the car at the terminal, and the road to Gudauri or Kazbegi is open to you the next morning instead of the next afternoon. The Military Highway and the mountain routes north reward an early start, and the difference between collecting a car at 10:00 and having it at your hotel at 08:00 is a full stretch of daylight.

If your plans shift, say so as early as you can — a delivery slot is a real appointment with a real driver, and moving it is far easier a day ahead than an hour before.

Documents, deposit and insurance for a 4x4 rental in Tbilisi

Foreign driving licences are accepted in Georgia for up to one year from the date you enter the country, with no exchange needed — so a visitor can legally drive a 4x4 on the licence they already hold. If that licence carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic script, Georgian practice is to ask for an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation; Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention. What a rental company asks to see, and the age and experience it requires, are the company's own conditions rather than the law. We agree those points with you when you book, so nothing about your paperwork is a surprise on the day.

• Licence: a foreign licence is valid for up to one year from entry; an IDP or notarised translation is needed if the script is neither Latin nor Cyrillic.
• Passport: the rental company asks for a passport alongside a valid driving licence.
• Deposit: agreed in advance and written into the rental agreement — never a figure quoted on this page.
• Insurance: third-party cover is not yet compulsory for owners of Georgian-registered cars; the government put its introduction into the autumn legislative work plan, with no date named.
• Optional cover: CDW and Super CDW are offered as options, covering the car, the driver and passengers; theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard insurance.
• Age and experience: agreed when booking, not fixed by Georgian law.

Georgian-registered cars — which is what you drive on a rental — currently carry no mandatory third-party policy, so the cover you rely on is the one in your agreement, whether that is basic, CDW or Super CDW. For the Military Highway or the mountain roads, the higher tier is the safer choice. Your personal belongings are a separate matter — a camera or a laptop left in a parked SUV is not covered by standard insurance, whatever tier you choose. Ask the manager which tier matches your route, and have the answer written into the agreement before you drive away.

In built-up areas the limit is 60 km/h and 20 km/h in residential zones; outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h with a light trailer. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory under the law. Phones only with a hands-free set, both hands on the wheel. Children under three travel in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight. Speeding by 15–40 km/h carries a 50 lari fine, over 40 km/h — 150 lari, a phone — 30 lari, a belt — 40 lari, running a red light — 50 lari. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and in zones set by the government chains on at least two front wheels may be required in particular weather.
