Insurance is offered as an option — the market in Georgia lists full cover for the car, the driver and the passengers as CDW or Super CDW, and theft of personal belongings sits outside the standard policy. The car is supplied with a full tank and returned with a full tank; if it comes back short, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the agreement. We do not offer a pre-paid tank or a full-to-empty option. Raise the deposit question early rather than at hand-over.

Documents for driving a Chevrolet in Georgia
Foreign licences are valid in Georgia for up to a year from the date you entered the country, and no exchange is needed. If your licence carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic characters, bring an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation — Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention. The recognition and replacement of foreign licences is governed by the Law of Georgia on Road Traffic and by an order of the Minister of Internal Affairs. A rental company will ask for your passport and a valid licence, and the deposit is set out in the rental agreement. Insurance and what the agreement covers
Georgia has no compulsory third-party insurance for owners of Georgian-registered cars at the moment; the government put its introduction into the autumn session's legislative work plan, with no date named. A rental car here is locally registered, so the compulsory insurance rule for foreign vehicles does not apply to it. Theft of personal belongings is not covered by the standard policy.

Speed limits, seat belts and the rules that catch visitors out
- Built-up areas: 60 km/h, dropping to 20 km/h in residential zones.
- Outside towns: 90 km/h for category B, 110 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h with a light trailer.
- Seat belts: required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory by law but we recommend them on the mountain descents.
- Phones: hands-free or a headset only, both hands on the wheel — a phone in the hand is not worth the risk.
- Alcohol: the limit sits around 0.3 ‰, so a single glass of Saperavi at lunch is already a risk before an evening drive back.
- Children: under three, a child seat or restraint on the rear seat; under six, never left alone in a parked car.
Winter tyres, mountain passes and the S3
Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-defined zones chains on at least the two front wheels may be required in particular weather. The S3, the Georgian Military Highway, runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, topping out at the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. The upper sections see landslides and snow, and the pass closes in avalanche conditions. Gudauri itself sits at 2,200 m, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the capital, with the ski season running from early December to mid-April.
Cross-border trips and the limits of the car
Armenia is reachable through Sadakhlo–Bagratashen, about 80 km south of the city, with 70 km to Sadakhlo by road; the second crossing is Ninotsminda–Bavra. Tbilisi to Yerevan is around 280 km, four to five hours including the border, and a rental car goes there only with our driver — a self-drive car stays in Georgia. Azerbaijan is a different story: the land border is closed to passengers, and only the Tbilisi–Baku passenger train resumed on 26 May, so a car cannot cross.
What to check before you leave the city
Fuel is petrol at 4.06 ₾ per litre and diesel at 4.76 ₾, about 17 % more, recorded on 21.09.2026. The Rikoti pass on the east–west E60 is free — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes, opened 29.12.2025 at a cost of about 2.6 billion ₾. Fill the tank before the mountains, not after.

- No alternative: a pre-paid tank and full-to-empty are not offered on the site, so plan to fill up before hand-back.

Parking in the city and what it costs
- Street parking: from 1 ₾ per hour, with the first 15 minutes free.
- How to pay: the Tbilisi Parking app, or the parking terminals and meters on the street.
- Permits: a week costs 4 ₾, six months 25 ₾ and a year 50 ₾ — a visitor on a rental car does not need one.
- Underground parking in the centre: Freedom Square around 2–3 ₾ per hour, Rike around 7 ₾ per day, Orbeliani Square around 1–2 ₾ per hour, Galleria Tbilisi around 2 ₾ for the first hour.
- If you get it wrong: an unpaid session is fined 50 ₾, and towing costs 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ a day of storage.
Tolls, and what a longer trip adds
Georgia's international and domestic roads are free of charge, and the Road Department confirmed no change is planned; there are no vignettes and no transponders to buy. The Rikoti pass on the east–west E60 — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes — opened on 29 December and is also free, which matters if you drive a Chevrolet towards Kutaisi or Batumi. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and chains on at least the two front wheels may be required in zones the government designates.
