The X3 is a 5-seat all-wheel-drive diesel SUV with 190 hp at €96; the X7 is a 7-seat Luxury SUV with 340 hp at €576; the 2 Series Gran Tourer seats 7 with 150 hp at €70. All three are automatic, all three take diesel, and the two SUVs send power to all four wheels. All-wheel drive does almost nothing for you on Gran Vía, but it earns its keep on the mountain roads of Sierra de Guadarrama, where DGT posts temporary restrictions for cars without winter tyres or chains when snow affects traffic. The Gran Tourer is the practical answer for seven people on a budget; the X7 is the same seven seats with 340 hp and a far quieter cabin.

BMW M3 and M4 Competition — the 510 hp end

Both M3 Competition and M4 Competition produce 510 hp from a 3.0 L petrol engine with all-wheel drive — the M3 at €560 a day, the M4 at €588. Driving a rented BMW in Madrid and the ZBE rules

The city drives on the right, every car we hand over is left-hand drive, and the centre runs on a 30 km/h default. The one thing that catches visitors out is not the traffic — it is the low-emission zone, the parking meters and their hours.

ZBE and the DGT sticker

ZBE Madrid (Zona de Bajas Emisiones de Madrid) covers every urban street of the municipality — all 21 districts — and cars without a DGT environmental sticker (category A, petrol registered before 2000 and diesel before 2005) cannot enter. Foreign-registered cars have no DGT sticker at all and must be registered in advance. The rules here are still moving: Ordenanza 2/2026 of 24.03.2026, transitional provision seven, took effect from 00:00 on 07.04.2026. In our practice the sticker question comes up before anything else — a client books an M4 Competition for a weekend and only then asks whether it can cross the M-30. It can: every BMW on this page is current enough to carry a DGT environmental sticker, and we confirm the category for your specific model when the booking is agreed.

Parking: zona azul, zona verde and the hours that matter

• SER zona azul (blue): maximum stay 4 hours; the standard paid bay on a city street, and the one you will find around Centro and Gran Vía.
• SER zona verde (green): maximum stay 2 hours; priced higher and reserved in priority for residents of the district.
• Hours: weekdays 09:00–21:00, Saturday 09:00–15:00 — outside those windows the same bay is free.
• 0 emisiones sticker: exempt from payment in SER bays.
• ECO sticker: 75% discount on SER rates, and the same 75% on residents' season tickets.
• Ring roads: M-30, M-40, M-45, M-50 and the radial A-1 to A-6 are toll-free; the R-2, R-3 and R-4 radials are the paid ones.

Speeds, tolls and the Sierra run

The motorway limit is 120 km/h, an ordinary out-of-town road is 90 km/h, and inside the city it is 30 km/h on a street with one lane each way — 20 km/h where the pavement and roadway share one level, 50 km/h where there are two or more lanes in one direction. Bus lanes do not count towards that lane tally. Winter tyres are not a seasonal requirement in Spain; DGT imposes restrictions point by point, by sign and gantry, when snow affects driving, which here means the mountain roads of the Sierra de Guadarrama. That is where an all-wheel-drive X3 or X7 earns its keep, and where a rear-wheel-drive 2 Series Convertible is the wrong car for the day.

Documents, insurance and the rental agreement

Every BMW on this page leaves with the compulsory Spanish third-party cover already in place; what varies between bookings is the excess, the deposit and the paperwork, and those are settled in the agreement you sign.

What is included as standard

• Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil: third-party liability cover comes with every car legally on the road in Spain and is part of the booking by default, not an add-on.
• Liability limits: the policy covers 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR per incident for property damage, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2, as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025.
• Driving uninsured: the penalty for driving without this cover runs from 601 to 3,005 EUR depending on the circumstances.

Excess, deposit and damage cover

• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): an optional partial waiver of your liability for bodywork damage — you remain responsible up to the excess, and the company covers the rest.
• Franquicia (excess): the amount you pay yourself if the car is damaged; the figure depends on the class and is printed in the agreement.
• Zero excess: Super CDW, Zero Excess or Full Protection buy the excess down to nothing for a daily supplement; the price is agreed when booking.

Licence, ID and card

• EU/EEA licences: valid in Spain exactly as issued, for as long as they remain in date — no international permit needed.
• Third-country licences: valid for driving as a tourist; anyone resident in Spain may use them for no more than six months from taking up habitual residence, after which the licence must be exchanged.
• Non-Latin script: a licence in Cyrillic, Arabic or characters is accepted only in Spanish, with an official translation, or if issued to the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention — in practice an IDP or a certified translation.
• Permiso Internacional de Conducción: valid for one year, and only ever shown together with your passport and your national licence — never on its own.
• Passport or ID and bank card: the original identity document and a credit card in the main driver's name.

The minimum age, the young-driver surcharge, the cards we accept and the fuel policy are not fixed by Spanish law — they are agreed when booking. Ask your manager for the excess and deposit figures for the specific BMW before you confirm, and read the franquicia line in the agreement: it stays payable even when you have bought the waiver.
