Delivery outside the city and outside those two airports is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site, so treat a drop-off in Batumi as something to raise with the manager first; a self-drive car does not cross into Armenia. Driving a rented Buick in Tbilisi and around Georgia

Georgia's limits are easy to hold: 60 km/h in built-up areas, 20 km/h in residential zones, 90 km/h outside towns on a category B licence and 110 km/h on a motorway. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory by law. A phone is only legal through a hands-free kit, with both hands on the wheel. Children under 3 travel in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, and a child under 6 may not be left alone in a parked car. The alcohol limit is 0.3 ‰. Mind the phone rule and street parking payments.

Fuel, parking and what a day of city driving costs

• Fuel: petrol is 4.06 ₾ per litre and diesel 4.76 ₾ per litre, so diesel runs about 17% dearer; the Encore takes petrol.
• Toll roads: Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, with no vignettes and no transponders — the 52 km Rikoti section (E60, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges) opened on 29.12.2025 and is free too.
• Street parking: from 1 ₾ per hour after the first 15 free minutes, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app, parking meters or parking.tbilisi.gov.ge.
• Underground car parks in the centre: Freedom Square around 2–3 ₾ per hour, Rike around 7 ₾ per day, Orbeliani Square around 1–2 ₾ per hour.
• If you get it wrong: an unpaid-parking fine is 50 ₾, and a towed car costs 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ per day of storage.

Out of the city: the Georgian Military Road and the winter rule

The S3 Georgian Military Road runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, topping out at the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m; the upper sections see landslides and snow, and the pass closes when avalanche risk is high. Gudauri itself sits at 2,200 m, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the capital, with the season running from early December to mid-April. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-defined zones under special weather conditions chains are required on at least two front wheels.

Crossing into Armenia

The main crossing south is Sadakhlo–Bagratashen, about 80 km from the capital (70 km to Sadakhlo by road), with Ninotsminda–Bavra as the second option; Yerevan is around 280 km away, a 4–5 hour run including the border; a rental car goes there only with our driver.

Cover is arranged as an option at booking — CDW or Super CDW. Theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard cover, so keep bags out of sight when the car is parked on a street overnight. Read the excess column before you choose a tier — the difference between CDW and Super CDW shows up only when something actually happens, and that is the wrong moment to discover which one you bought.

Traffic rules that carry fines
