How car rental without a deposit works in Costa Brava

The agreement sets out what is payable. What the agreement does carry is the ordinary commercial frame of a Spanish hire: the price of the days you booked, the fuel rule, and the conditions attached to the class of car you chose. Deposit amounts, insurance excess and delivery fees are all set out in the agreement and are agreed when booking, so there is no figure to surprise you at hand-over. We deliver the car to the client, clean and with a full tank. The tank is full when it reaches you, which matters on a coastline where the first long run — Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Roses is 75.2 km, to Lloret de Mar 34.6 km — happens before you have learned where the petrol stations are. Return it full — full-to-full (lleno-lleno) is our only fuel rule.

• Smart Forfour, Toyota Aygo X: 4 seats, petrol, manual, rear-wheel drive on the Forfour, €23 a day.
• Dacia Sandero, Fiat 500, Fiat Panda: 5 seats on the Sandero and Panda, hybrid on the Fiat pair, €24 a day.
• Citroen C3, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i10: the i10 is the cheapest automatic on the page at €25 a day.
• Hyundai i20, Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Volkswagen Polo: 5 seats, petrol, manual, €26 a day.
• Skoda Fabia, Toyota Yaris Hybrid: the Fabia is automatic at €28, the Yaris Hybrid automatic at €30.
• In short: the €22 group is manual and petrol; if you need an automatic, the floor is €25.

Comfort class — 4 cars from €35 a day

Comfort is four cars from €35: Skoda Scala, Ford Focus, Opel Astra and Renault Megane, all five seats and all manual petrol. The Scala runs 1.0 L and 110 hp at €35 a day, the Focus 1.0 L and 125 hp at €36, the Astra 1.2 L and 110 hp at €36, the Megane 1.3 L and 140 hp at €36.

Seats, fuel and transmission across the fleet

Check seats before class: a 5-seat Economy at €24 can beat a 4-seat car for a family, and the hybrid Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda sit in the same €24 band as the petrol Dacia Sandero. Eight euros a day separates the cheapest and the dearest Economy car, so the model you actually want usually costs less than the upgrade to Comfort.

Daily, weekly and monthly rates

Weekly is daily × 6, from €132; monthly is daily × 21, from €462. The cheapest Economy car, at €22 a day, comes to €132 for a week and €462 for a month; the dearest Comfort car, at €36 a day, comes to €216 and €756 on the same count.

Prices by class and model

Economy runs €22–€30 and Comfort €35–€36 a day. Eight euros separate the cheapest and the dearest car in Economy.

What the price does not include

• Fuel: the car comes with a full tank and goes back full — full-to-full, lleno-lleno in Spain; the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are set out in the rental agreement.
• Delivery: the car is brought to the address agreed with a manager, and the terms of that delivery are set out in the rental agreement.
• Fuel itself: petrol 95 E5 averaged 1.94 €/l across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations; the Costa Brava coast runs slightly higher at 1.956 €/l across 58 stations.

Driving in Costa Brava with car rental without a deposit

EU and EEA licences — including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway — are fully valid in Spain while they have not expired, and no international permit is needed. A licence not written in Spanish is accepted either with an official certified translation or if it was issued on the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. The DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip; it runs for one year and is shown only together with your passport and national licence.

What is agreed when you book

• Booking: the delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
• Minimum age and experience: the minimum rental age and any young-driver surcharge are agreed when booking — Spain lets you drive from 18, but the condition is set per booking.
• Card: the card accepted for the booking is agreed when booking.
• Rental agreement: the deposit, the insurance excess and any delivery fee are set out in the rental agreement, never quoted before it is drawn up.
• Territory: whether the car may cross the border for a run to Collioure is agreed when booking.

Rules of the road you will actually meet

Speed limits on the roads that string the resorts together are 120 km/h on autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 — and 90 km/h on the carretera convencional, which covers the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260. The alcohol limit is 0.25 mg per litre of breath, dropping to 0.15 mg for drivers in their first two years and for professional drivers; anything above 0.60 mg is a criminal offence. A phone held in the hand costs €200 and six points. Seat belts and child restraints are mandatory, and an SRI is required for children up to 135 cm tall. Fines are graded leve up to €100, grave at €200 and muy grave at €500, with a 50% discount for payment within 20 calendar days. Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona applies from 15.09.2025, Monday to Friday, 7:00–20:00 on working days, to cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car from Rent-Trip is not restricted — but if you drive your own vehicle into the zone, check the badge before you enter.

Fuel, tolls and parking on a no-deposit rental

Fuel: full-to-full, and what petrol costs across the Costa Brava

Our only fuel rule is full-to-full (lleno-lleno): the car is supplied with a full tank and returned with a full tank. Petrol 95 E5 across the province of Girona averages €1.94 a litre, with a median of €1.979 across 250 filling stations. On the coast the average is €1.956 across 58 stations. Diesel (Gasóleo A) runs at €1.922 on average in the province, and Petrol 98 E5 at €2.106. Fill up before you hand the car back — the missing fuel and the refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Tolls: the AP-7 corridor is free

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole corridor from Vila-seca up to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the route towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar; barriers came down on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: toll-free since 01.09.2021.
• C-16 and the southern C-32: the only Generalitat tolls left, at Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa and Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell (Vallcarca €8.42, Cubelles €5.03, category 2) — none of them on a Costa Brava route.

Parking: zona blava in Girona, seasonal lots on the coast

In Girona, zona blava runs Monday to Saturday on working days, 09:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00 (Sant Narcís differs), at €1.20 an hour capped at two hours — €2.40. Zona verda for non-residents costs the same €1.20 an hour, two hours maximum, with Pedreres–Vista Alegre open Monday to Friday 09:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00, Saturday 09:30–13:00, and Güell–Devesa Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00. In Lloret de Mar the Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces at about €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September and free outside that window; the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride holds 200 cars, is free for stays over 12 hours and includes a free bus ticket into the centre, from 15 June to 15 September.

This is a stretch of resort towns rather than one city, so the first drive sets the tone of the whole trip. GRO sits 34.6 km from Lloret de Mar, 54.4 km from Palafrugell and 75.2 km from Roses — under an hour to the first two, just over an hour to the third.

For arrivals into BCN the numbers are different: 89.6 km and roughly 75 minutes to Lloret de Mar, or 109.4 km and 87 minutes onward to Girona-Costa Brava Airport if you are heading further north first.

And if your plans touch Girona, remember the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona runs Monday to Friday, 7:00–20:00 on working days: cars without a DGT environmental badge and not registered in Girona are restricted, while the Spanish fleet carries the badge, so a car from us is not affected. Parking in Girona is another small thing to plan — zona blava runs 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00 on working days at €1.20 an hour, capped at two hours.
