Speed limits and the alcohol rule

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h — this is the limit that applies across the city's districts, including the roads around the terminal.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h on ordinary highways, rising to 120 km/h on the motorways (M7 and M9) and 110 km/h on the expressways.
• Elevated sections: 100 km/h.

Motorway 7 is the one that matters if you are heading for the coast: 149.3 km from the capital towards Chonburi, Pattaya and Map Ta Phut, with Pattaya at the 125.865 km mark. From the Lat Krabang entry a passenger car pays ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya, and the whole run down to Pattaya comes to about ฿105–130. Cash, M-PASS and Easy Pass all work at its nine payment points, and the road passes Suvarnabhumi on the way.

Motorway 9, the outer Kanchanaphisek ring, uses M-Flow: no barriers, a camera reads your plate and the bill follows, at roughly ฿30–70 for a car. Don Muang Tollway is the other useful one — 28.1 km above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng to Don Mueang, about ฿60–115 for a car.

M-Flow has a quirk worth knowing before you join it. Without a registered tag you have two days to pay by plate number through the M-Flow site or app, by QR, at a bank or at an ATM. From the third day the tariff doubles, then comes the tariff plus twice the tariff plus a penalty of ten times the tariff, and after that the case can go to court.

Parking and where the rules stop applying

Parking in the city is mostly a shopping-centre affair, and the free windows are generous. CentralWorld gives two hours free, then ฿20 an hour, and ฿50 an hour after six. ICONSIAM gives two hours free, charges ฿30 for the third hour and ฿60 an hour after seven. Terminal 21 Asok gives three hours free, then ฿20 an hour from the fourth to the sixth and ฿50 an hour from the seventh. Central Bangna gives six hours free, and Esplanade Ratchada, PARA Pinklao and Central Festival Eastville are free outright. On the street, read the signs where you stop.

The Low Emission Zone does not touch you. It applies only to vehicles with six or more wheels — trucks and buses — on days when PM2.5 passes 75.1 µg/m³ in at least five districts, and cars and pickups are outside its scope. The congestion charge of ฿40–50 floated for Sukhumvit, Silom and Ratchadaphisek is still at the study stage and is not in force, so do not budget for it.
