The car arrives clean with a full tank, and every unit in our fleet is automatic and right-hand drive, because traffic in Thailand keeps to the left. Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties; first-class insurance covers damage to the car, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement has been a contract controlled by the OCPB, written in Thai, with all fees and penalties disclosed in it. The 4169 is the loop, but the interesting detours leave it. Big Buddha and Bang Rak are on the north-east shore and easy to reach straight off the loop; Ang Thong Marine Park is a boat trip, so the car waits at the pier.

Speed limits on the island top out at 80 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them; there are no motorways and no divided four-lane stretches to reach the higher limits you will see quoted for the mainland. If you are unsure about a turn, pull over safely and check the map rather than deciding mid-junction.

Fuel on the island: three grades, mostly cash

• Gasohol 91 and 95: ฿39.57 and ฿39.94 a litre in the same list.
• Diesel B20 and Hi Diesel S: ฿36.44 and ฿41.44 on the same list; which diesel grade a given car takes is confirmed when booking.
• Payment: cash is the norm at island stations and only some accept cards, so keep small notes in the car.
• Prices: those Bangchak figures are Bangkok retail without the Bangkok local tax; the island rate is not measured, so treat them as a reference, not a quote.

Seasons: the dry window and the wet one

• February to April: the driest stretch, 64.3 mm of rain in February across 4.3 wet days — the best window for a full loop.
• October to December: the heaviest rain of the year, peaking in November at 444.6 mm over 16.5 days, with flooded stretches and slippery asphalt on the ring road.

If you are used to driving on the right, the first kilometres along the ring road are the ones to take slowly.

Rules that catch visitors on Koh Samui:

• Alcohol: 50 mg% in the blood is the drunk-driving threshold; 20 mg% applies to drivers under 20 and to temporary licences.
• Penalty: up to 1 year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000 or both, and a licence suspension of at least 6 months; refusing the test counts as admission.
• Child seats: children under 6 must ride in a TISI-standard seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a belt or a proper seat; the fine reaches ฿2,000.
• Seat belts: every passenger wears one, including the back row.
• Kerb parking: stop away from red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs.
• Speed: 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90–120 km/h outside them; the island has no motorway and no divided four-lane road.

The blue square tax sticker on the windscreen carries the year in the Buddhist calendar — Gregorian plus 543 — and a rental car should show a current one. Where a condition is not fixed here, it is agreed when booking.
