Parking in the capital: pay from 1 lari an hour

Kerbside parking is zonal: from 1 ₾ per hour after the first 15 minutes free. An unpaid parking session carries a 50 ₾ fine; a towed car costs 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ per day of storage. Season tickets exist — 4 ₾ a week, 25 ₾ for six months, 50 ₾ a year — but a visitor on a short booking does not need one.

Tolls, winter tyres and what actually costs you nothing

Every international and domestic road in Georgia is toll-free, and the Road Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that «use of Georgia's international and domestic roads remains free of charge», with no change planned — no vignettes, no transponders. The Rikoti pass (E60, east–west) is free too: 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes, opened 29.12.2025. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-designated zones in poor weather, chains on at least two front wheels.

Trips worth taking in a cheap car rental in Tbilisi

Georgia's roads carry no tolls at all, so the money you save on the daily rate goes straight into distance — a full day of driving costs you fuel and nothing else. The Department of Roads confirmed on 10.06.2026 that «use of Georgia's international and domestic roads remains free of charge» and no change is planned, and the Rikoti pass on the east–west E60 — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes, opened 29.12.2025 — is free as well. There are no vignettes and no transponders to buy anywhere.

Distances below are measured from Freedom Square, so you can plan a day trip without a second thought about the budget.

• Gudauri: 121 km, the ski resort at 2,200 m by the Jvari pass — 2–2.5 hours each way from the capital.
• Vardzia: 225 km, the cave city — a long day, but a realistic one in a Crossover.

Winter changes the picture on the mountain routes. Winter tyres are required from 1 December to 1 March, and chains on at least the two front wheels are required in government-designated zones under special weather conditions. The upper sections of the Military Road close when avalanche risk is high, so check conditions before committing to Stepantsminda at 153 km.

The Armenian border at Sadakhlo is 70 km south, with Yerevan roughly 274 km away and 4–5 hours including the crossing. A rental car goes there only with our driver — a self-drive car stays in Georgia. Azerbaijan is out by road: the land border has stayed closed to passengers since 2020, and even after the Tbilisi–Baku passenger train resumed on 26 May, all other land crossings remain sealed.
