A foreign visitor driving here needs their home licence plus an International Driving Permit. The permit must be the 1949 Geneva Convention model, and Thai law recognises it alongside the national licence — not instead of it.

Left-hand traffic and a right-hand drive car

Beach Road and Second Road run one-way anticlockwise as a pair, which quietly solves the hardest part of a first evening — you cannot meet oncoming traffic head-on there. Take the car out on Sukhumvit first, before you thread it through the sois, and let your hands learn the layout while the road is still wide.

Speed limits, cameras and fines

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h inside Pattaya City — the 1969 law names it a built-up area outright.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h; Motorway 7 allows 120 km/h, and a sign can lower any of these.
• Fines: up to ฿1,000, though the receipt usually comes in at ฿500.
• Cameras on Motorway 7: the 120 km/h limit is enforced primarily by speed cameras, and a camera fine is issued to the owner of the car — that is, to us — and re-invoiced to the renter.
• Parking: no stopping at red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerbs.

Alcohol, seat belts and children

The blood-alcohol rule of 20 mg/dl applies to drivers under 20, holders of temporary licences, drivers without a licence and drivers holding the wrong category — a ministerial regulation published in the Royal Gazette on 20 September 2024. Every passenger buckles up, including the rear row, and children under 6 travel in a TISI-standard child seat. Below 135 cm a seat belt or a special seat does the job, and in a pickup a child may sit in the front passenger seat but never in the load bed.

Islands and the coast

Koh Larn sits 7.5 km offshore and the ferry out of Bali Hai takes passengers only, so the vehicle stays parked on the mainland for the day. Further south, Koh Samet is reached through Ban Phe pier, 79.6 km and about 62 minutes away by road, and Koh Chang is a much longer haul east — 245.1 km to the car-ferry pier at Laem Ngop.

Longer runs: Bangkok, Hua Hin, the east coast

Motorway 7 runs from Bangkok through Chonburi and on towards the city, 125.865 km of eight-lane road at 120 km/h, with the Motorway Spur dropping you in at the Mab Prachan Interchange. The full Bangkok run costs 105–130 ฿, and in a rental car cash in the left-hand lanes is the simpler choice.
