Licence Rules Under Spanish Law

EU and EEA licences, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, are fully valid in Spain for as long as they have not expired, and no international permit is needed alongside them. Licences from outside the EU/EEA are valid for driving as a visitor if they are still in force and the holder is old enough for the equivalent category in Spain; six months after taking up ordinary residence in Spain they stop being valid and must be exchanged. Speed Limits and Fines

Speed on autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 — is 120 km/h, and 90 km/h on carretera convencional such as the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260. In town the limit is 30 km/h on a street with one lane each way, 20 km/h where the carriageway and pavement form a single platform, and 50 km/h with two or more lanes in one direction. Speeding fines run from €100 with no points to €600 with six, and anything more than 60 km/h over the limit in town or 80 km/h outside it is a criminal offence, not an administrative one. A hand-held phone costs €200 and six points; the belt, helmet and child-seat rule costs €200 and four points, and child restraints are compulsory for anyone under 135 cm. Pay within 20 calendar days and the fine drops by 50%.

Alcohol, and One Porsche-Specific Note

The general alcohol limit is 0.25 mg per litre of breath, dropping to 0.15 mg for drivers in their first two years and for professionals; above 0.60 mg it becomes a criminal matter. Fines for alcohol or drugs run €500–€1,000 with four to six points. Tolls on the Routes You Will Actually Drive

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole corridor from the Catalan capital to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so the main artery north costs nothing.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): free since the barriers came down on the night of 31.08.2021; this is the road from the Catalan capital toward Blanes and Lloret de Mar.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: free since 01.09.2021.
• C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the C-32 south (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell): these are the only Generalitat tolls left, with the Vallcarca barrier at €8.42 and Cubelles at €5.03, category 2 — neither sits on a Costa Brava route.

Catalonia keeps debating a return to charging for fast roads, by vignette or by use, but no decision has been taken.

Parking: Blue Zones, Green Zones and Resort Car Parks

• Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday on working days, 09:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00 (Sant Narcís runs to a different timetable), €1.20 per hour, two hours maximum, so €2.40.
• Girona, zona verda for non-residents: also €1.20 per hour, two hours maximum; Pedreres–Vista Alegre runs Monday–Friday 09:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 plus Saturday 09:30–13:00, while Güell–Devesa runs Monday–Saturday 08:00–20:00.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces at roughly €15 per day from 23 June to 11 September, free the rest of the year.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride: 200 spaces, free for stays over 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre, running 15 June–15 September.

The Girona low-emission zone, Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, applies from 15.09.2025 between 07:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday on working days, and covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted, with 24 days a year allowed inside the zone during restricted hours without a permit; cameras read plates, so there is no sticker to display. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, and cars wearing it face no restriction.

Two Airports, Two Different Drives

Girona-Costa Brava Airport sits at Vilobí d'Onyar, 12.5 km south-west of Girona, and the drive from it to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km — roughly 37 minutes. Barcelona-El Prat is the longer approach: 89.6 km to Lloret, about 75 minutes with no traffic, mostly along the C-32 and C-31. If your flight lands at BCN, plan the hand-over around that hour.

Fuel, Condition and the Return

The car comes clean with a full tank, and it goes back the same way: full-to-full, the lleno-lleno policy. If the tank is short on return, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement — no other fuel option is offered. Walk the car with the person handing it over and get every scratch and dent written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you drive away.
