• Registre metropolità de vehicles estrangers: any car on non-Spanish plates must be registered in advance in the Registre metropolità de vehicles estrangers i altres vehicles autoritzats a les zones de baixes emissions before it may enter the ZBE Rondes BCN.
• Advance, not on arrival: the registration is completed ahead of the trip, so it belongs in the booking conversation, not in the first minutes at the wheel.
• Who handles it: the paperwork around the plate is agreed when booking — the badge on the windscreen is what you check at hand-over.
• Where it bites: the boundary runs through L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat, so a hotel just outside the city centre can still sit inside the zone.
• Timing: the zone operates on working days from Monday to Friday; weekend driving around the city is not governed by the same weekday restriction.

Which licences are valid for premium car rental in Barcelona

• EU and EEA licences: fully valid in Spain while they remain in force, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway; nothing extra is needed and no IDP is required.
• Third-country licences: valid if the licence is in force, you are old enough in Spain for the equivalent category, and no more than six months have passed since you took up ordinary residence here.
• Licences not in Spanish: valid either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if issued to the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.

What insurance is included with premium car rental in Barcelona

The Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is included in every hire by Spanish law and applies at all times, even if the driver at the wheel was not named in the agreement. It covers injury and property damage caused to third parties, with statutory limits of 70 million EUR per incident for personal injury and 15 million EUR for property damage, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2, as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. It does not cover the driver or the car itself, which is why collision and theft protection are sold separately. In our experience, drivers booking a premium model for the first time assume the compulsory cover protects everything — it does not, so read what sits above it before you sign.
