Do you need an International Driving Permit
A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence alone. Driving without one carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident.

Arriving at Samui International Airport
Samui International Airport (USM) sits in Bo Phut, roughly 2 km north of Chaweng, and handles 50 flights a day. Give the manager your flight number when the booking is agreed, and the hand-over time is arranged with the same manager.
Picking the car up anywhere else on the island
The ring road runs 51 km around the island and links Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam, so a hand-over in any of those places needs no detour. Delivery elsewhere is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.
Renting an Isuzu on Koh Samui roads
Thailand drives on the left and every car here is right-hand drive, so your first kilometre in an Isuzu will feel mirrored. The island's spine is a 51 km ring road that links the lowland and the coast, and every resort sits on it: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam.
What to watch for
Flooded sections appear after heavy rain, oil patches are left by refuse trucks, and animals wander onto the tarmac. The wettest stretch of the year runs from mid-October to early December, when the island takes its heaviest rainfall and the asphalt turns slick.
Keep your speed low in built-up stretches, and remember the seatbelt rule applies to every passenger, including those in the back.

Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. Ask to read that clause before you sign, because the excess is the number that decides whether a scratched bumper is your problem or ours.

Licence, IDP and the fines that follow
Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. Driving without the permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — so the permit is not a formality you can sort out after a stop.
Camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, which on a rental means they reach us first and then you. Drink-driving limits on Koh Samui are 50 mg% in blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; the sanction runs to up to a year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months, and refusing the test counts as admitting it.
Everyday rules that generate the paperwork
- Seat belts: every passenger wears one, including the back row.
- Child seats: children under 6 need a TISI-standard seat, and under 135 cm a belt or special seat — fine up to ฿2,000.
- Kerbside parking: red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs are off limits; the penalty is set out in the rental agreement.
