When a longer booking pays off

• A full week: weekly pricing starts at €228, so a €38 car costs the same as six days at the daily rate.

Hybrid or petrol: what actually changes on the road

Petrol covers 15 of the 20 models, from the 1.0 L 90 hp Renault Captur up to the 1.2 L 130 hp Dacia Duster and Opel Mokka. Hybrid covers the remaining five: Fiat 600 at 1.2 L and 100 hp, Ford Puma at 1.0 L and 125 hp, Toyota Yaris Cross at 1.5 L and 116 hp, Toyota C-HR at 1.8 L and 140 hp, and Renault Arkana at 1.6 L and 145 hp. Note that four of those five hybrids are automatic; only the Puma is manual.

For fuel, Gasolina 95 E5 averaged 1.94 EUR/l across the province of Girona, with a median of 1.979, a minimum of 1.718 and a maximum of 2.122 across 250 filling stations; the coastal strip averaged 1.956 across 58 stations. Gasolina 98 E5 sat at 2.106 provincial average and 2.131 on the coast, and Gasóleo A at 1.922 and 1.932 respectively.

ZBE, tolls and fuel on a Costa Brava crossover rental

Three things shape a driving day here: the low-emission zone in Girona, the toll status of the motorways that cross the region, and where you refuel. All three are predictable, and none of them needs special equipment on a crossover.

The ZBE in Girona and what it means for a hired car

Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025 and covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It operates 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted. There is a concession of 24 days a year inside the restricted hours without a permit, and enforcement is by cameras reading number plates — you do not display the sticker. Spanish fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car with the sticker faces no restriction. Our advice: if a route takes you into central Girona on a weekday morning, plan the stop for before 7:00 or after 20:00 and skip the question entirely. Visitors with foreign plates can apply for a temporary authorisation where the vehicle meets the technical and environmental requirements.

Tolls on the roads you will actually use

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the entire Barcelona — Girona — border corridor has been toll-free since 01.09.2021.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the route from BCN towards Blanes and Lloret; barriers were removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: toll-free since 01.09.2021.
• Remaining Generalitat tolls: only C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, with the Vallcarca barrier at 8.42 € and Cubelles at 5.03 €, category 2). None of them sit on Costa Brava routes.

Catalonia is discussing a return of charges on express roads, whether as a vignette or pay-per-use, but no decision exists. Fuel averages in the province of Girona sit at 1.94 €/l for Petrol 95 E5, 2.106 €/l for Petrol 98 E5 and 1.922 €/l for Gasóleo A, across 250, 152 and 266 filling stations respectively. On the coast the same grades average 1.956 €, 2.131 € and 1.932 € across 58, 36 and 59 stations.

Documents, licence and the rental agreement for crossover car rental in Costa Brava

European Union and European Economic Area licences, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, are fully valid in Spain while they remain in date, and no international driving permit is needed alongside them. Everything else — the deposit, the excess, the delivery fee, any discount — is set out in the rental agreement, so read those lines before the booking is fixed.

What holders of non-EU licences should carry

Drivers from outside the EU and EEA can use their national licence in Spain if it is still valid and the holder is old enough for the equivalent category, and for up to six months after taking up ordinary residence in the country. Spain's DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip and carrying it together with the passport and the national licence. A licence that is not written in Spanish is accepted either with an official certified translation or where it follows the model in Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. The permit itself is a supporting document — it is shown only with the passport and the national licence, and it runs for one year.

What the agreement covers

• Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil: compulsory third-party cover that comes with any rental car in Spain, with limits of 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage.
• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): an option that removes your liability for damage to the car itself after a collision, except for the excess.
• THW (Theft Protection): an option covering full or partial theft and vandalism damage, again except for the excess.
• Franquicia: the excess you pay yourself on damage; it is printed in the rental agreement.
• Depósito: the amount blocked on the card against possible damage and extras, told to you before the agreement is signed.

Damage found at hand-over belongs in the agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive away, and both sides sign it, with a copy staying with you. If the model you booked is not available, you can ask for another car at no extra cost, even one class above; if you are given a lower class, the price should come down. Where the car does not match the agreed terms, such as an automatic gearbox, the booking can be cancelled and the prepayment returned. The compulsory third-party cover is a different matter: Spanish law puts it in every rental, with limits of 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage (Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, art. 4.2, as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025).
