Solo travellers and couples suit the hatchback; families of four plus a suitcase suit the sedan. If your trip starts at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) and ends in the old town, either one works, though the Elantra's 5 seats settle the argument before it starts.

Crossover Hyundais — Santa Fe and Tucson

The Santa Fe and Tucson both cost $69 per day; the Santa Fe adds all-wheel drive and 194 hp, the Tucson runs front-wheel drive at 190 hp. That 4 hp gap means nothing next to the drivetrain. All-wheel drive earns its keep on wet gradients toward Kazbegi. The Tucson suits city-only trips — Vake, Saburtalo, the same 5 seats, the same automatic.

The SUV option — Hyundai Palisade

The Palisade is our only SUV & 4x4 Hyundai at $120 per day, with 5 seats, all-wheel drive and 249 hp. There is one Palisade, so book it early. On a wet mountain pass, ground clearance and all-wheel drive decide more than horsepower, and this is where the Palisade's 249 hp actually gets used.

Foreign driving licences are valid in Georgia for up to a year from the date you enter the country, so no exchange and no local permit are needed for a booking of a few days or weeks.

What you need to bring

• Passport: a valid passport for the driver named in the agreement.
• Driving licence: a current licence; if it carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic characters, bring an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation, as Georgia follows the 1968 Vienna Convention.

Insurance and the rental agreement

Georgia has no compulsory third-party motor insurance for owners of locally registered cars as of 05.09.2026: the government put its introduction into the autumn legislative work plan, with no date named. A car here carries Georgian plates, so the mandatory cover that applies to foreign-registered vehicles does not apply to it. What you can add is the operator's own option — full cover for the car, the driver and the passengers, sold as CDW or Super CDW, and it is worth asking for by name rather than assuming it is bundled in. Theft of personal belongings is not covered by the standard policy. The deposit, the excess and any delivery fee sit in the rental agreement — read the figure there before you sign, not after.

Age, experience and what is agreed at booking

The minimum age and driving experience are not fixed by Georgian law; they are a rental company's own condition, and the same is true of the young-driver surcharge, and the cards accepted; a self-drive car stays in Georgia. We confirm all of these when booking, so nothing about your case is decided by a general rule. Speed limits are enforceable, though: 60 km/h in built-up areas, 20 km/h in residential zones, 90 km/h outside towns for category B and 110 km/h on motorways. Seat belts are required for the driver and front passengers — rear belts are not compulsory under the law. Alcohol is set at 0.3 per mille, phones only through a hands-free kit, and children under three need a child seat in the back. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-defined zones chains are required on at least two front wheels in severe weather. Fines run from 50 ₾ for speeding 15–40 km/h over the limit to 500 ₾ for driving without a licence, with a 20% discount if paid within ten days.

Georgia drives on the right, and the rules a visitor meets first are the city's own — zonal street parking, a 60 km/h urban limit and a fuel bill that runs on petrol. None of it is complicated once you know the numbers.

Street parking and what it costs

• Zonal street parking: charges start from 1 ₾ per hour, with the first 15 minutes free, on the marked street zones.
• Where to pay: the Tbilisi Parking app, the parking meters and terminals, or the parking.tbilisi.gov.ge portal.
• Penalty for not paying: a 50 ₾ fine, and the same figure applies to parking left unpaid.
• Towing: removal runs at 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ per day of storage.
• Season permits: a year costs 50 ₾, six months 25 ₾, a week 4 ₾ — a visitor on a short hire rarely needs one.
• Metered garages downtown: Freedom Square around 2–3 ₾ per hour, Rike around 7 ₾ per day, Orbeliani Square around 1–2 ₾ per hour, Galleria Tbilisi roughly 2 ₾ for the first hour.

Fuel, tolls and the tank rule

Petrol in Georgia was 4.06 ₾ a litre and diesel 4.76 ₾ on 21.09.2026 — diesel runs about 17% dearer, so the Elantra, Veloster, Santa Fe, Tucson and Palisade all take the cheaper pump. Tolls are not part of your budget at all: the Roads Department stated on 10.06.2026 that «use of Georgia's international and domestic roads remains free of charge», with no change planned, and there are no vignettes or transponders to buy. The Rikoti section of the E60 east–west route — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes, opened 29.12.2025 — is free like the rest. Our own rule is full-to-full: the car leaves with a full tank and comes back with one, otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Limits, belts and the drink-drive line

Urban roads allow 60 km/h and residential zones 20 km/h; outside built-up areas a category B car may do 90 km/h, or 110 km/h on a motorway, dropping to 80 km/h with a light trailer. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers, while the rear row is not compulsory by law. Phones stay on a hands-free kit or speaker, with both hands on the wheel. Children under 3 ride in the back in a child seat matched to height and weight, and a child under 6 may not be left alone in a parked car. The alcohol limit sits at 0.3 ‰ (0.03%). Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-designated zones chains on at least two front wheels are required in particular weather. Fines are modest but real: 50 ₾ for 15–40 km/h over the limit, 150 ₾ above that, 30 ₾ for a phone, 40 ₾ for a belt, 50 ₾ for a red light, 500 ₾ for driving without a licence, with a 20% discount for payment within 10 days. On the mountain sections above Jvari pass, closures happen during avalanche risk — check the road status the morning you plan to leave, not the evening before.

• Hyundai Santa Fe (Crossover, all-wheel, $69/day): Ananuri at 66 km, Gudauri at 121 km and Stepantsminda at 153 km along the Georgian Military Road, the S3 route that runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda.

The Georgian Military Road: the classic Hyundai day

The S3 crosses the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m, the highest point of the route, and the upper sections are prone to landslides and snow, with closures when avalanche risk is high. A 23 km bypass with a 9 km tunnel has been under construction since 2021. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m by the pass and is normally 2–2.5 hours from the city, with the ski season running from early December to mid-April. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in designated zones chains on at least two front wheels are required in special weather conditions. The Santa Fe and the Palisade suit this route — all-wheel drive and 194 or 249 hp make the climb to Kazbegi noticeably calmer than a front-wheel car loaded with four people and luggage.

Free roads, cheap fuel, and where the money actually goes

Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, confirmed by the Roads Department on 10.06.2026, with no vignettes, transponders or planned changes — the Rikoti pass on the east–west E60, 52 km with 51 tunnels and 97 bridges, opened on 29.12.2025 and is free as well. Petrol costs 4.06 ₾ per litre and diesel 4.76 ₾, so diesel is roughly 17% more expensive. For a Bakuriani or Borjomi run, fill up before you leave the city.
