Licence and documents for a 7-seater rental

A foreign visitor driving a 7-seater here needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act sets that out. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence without an IDP and without conversion. Thailand recognises the 1949-format permit alongside the national licence, so carry both. The police fine for driving without the proper documents is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident. Bring a passport, the home licence, the IDP unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name — the security hold is taken on that card and the amount is set out in the rental agreement. Minimum driver age is 21. Conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.

Traffic, speed limits and cameras

Traffic keeps to the LEFT and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive. Built-up limits are 80 km/h — Pattaya City is named a built-up area in the 1969 law — 90 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on Motorway 7; a sign can lower any of these. The fine runs to ฿1,000, and on a receipt it is usually ฿500. The 120 km/h limit on Motorway 7 is enforced primarily by speed cameras, and a camera fine is issued to the car owner — the rental company — then re-invoiced to the renter. The drink-drive threshold is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20, holders of temporary licences, drivers without a licence or on the wrong category.

Insurance and what the agreement covers
