Speed limits and how they are enforced

• Autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33): 120 km/h for cars.
• Carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260 and similar): 90 km/h.
• Urban streets: 30 km/h where there is one lane each way, 20 km/h on a single shared platform, 50 km/h where there are two or more lanes in one direction.
• Speeding fines: 100 EUR with no points, then 300 EUR and 2 points, 400 EUR and 4 points, 500 EUR and 6 points, up to 600 EUR and 6 points.
• Drink-driving: the general limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and professionals, and above 0.60 mg/l it becomes a criminal offence.
• Phone in hand: 200 EUR and 6 points; seatbelt or child-seat offences are 200 EUR and 4 points.

Child seats (SRI) are required for children up to 135 cm tall, and a fine for an unrestrained child falls on the driver. Fines carry a 50% discount when paid within 20 calendar days, which is worth remembering if a camera picks you up after you have flown home.

Tolls, parking and the Girona low-emission zone

Tolls have largely disappeared from this stretch of coast: the AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera, the whole Barcelona-Girona-French border corridor, has been free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme and C-33 are free too, with barriers removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021. The paid roads that remain are the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat-Terrassa-Manresa) and the C-32 south of Barcelona towards Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell — neither sits on a Costa Brava route. Parking in Girona means the zona blava or zona verda at 1.20 EUR per hour with a two-hour maximum, Monday to Saturday, with different hours in Sant Narcís and in the Pedreres-Vista Alegre and Güell-Devesa areas.

Girona also runs a low-emission zone, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, in force since 15.09.2025 and bounded by la Devesa park, c. d'Emili Grahit, c. del Riu Güell, c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It operates 7-20 on working weekdays and restricts cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona; cameras read number plates, so there is no sticker to display, and a temporary permit is available for foreign plates that meet the technical and environmental requirements. Spanish fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car collected from us is not affected.

Cap de Creus and the north coast

The Cap de Creus road is the one place where the date decides whether you drive at all: access to the Far de Cap de Creus lighthouse is restricted by date: 28–31 March and individual days in April and May, 9:30–19:00; in June on the 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th and 20th–30th, and daily from July to 13 September, 9:30–21:30. Our advice is to fix the Cap de Creus day first and build the rest of the week around it — swapping days later is harder than swapping a beach afternoon.

Inland days and the northern border

Pals and Peratallada, Besalú and the Garrotxa volcanic zone sit inland, away from the coast road, and suit a car with five seats and a boot rather than a van.

In Girona, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has operated since 15.09.2025, running 7–20 on weekdays, and our cars carry the DGT environmental badge, so the zone does not restrict them. Fuel in the province averages €1.94 a litre for petrol 95 E5 and €1.922 for diesel, so a full tank on a long run is a real line in the budget. If your route takes in the Cap de Creus road towards the lighthouse, access is controlled on set days and hours through the season, so check the calendar before you commit to a date.

Two things worth deciding early
