Sedans and mountain roads — what to expect

Gudauri sits at about 2,200 m, roughly 2–2.5 hours from Tbilisi, and the road forms part of E117. The pass does close when there is avalanche risk, and the upper sections see landslides and snow, so a sedan on this route is a weather decision rather than a capability one. Gudauri's ski season runs from early December to mid-April, and winter tyres are required between 1 December and 1 March.

• Outside built-up areas for category B: 90 km/h; 110 km/h on motorways.

A foreign driving licence is valid here for up to one year from the date you enter the country, and you do not exchange it for a local one. That single rule decides most of what you need to bring. Rent-Trip asks for a passport and a valid licence, and if your licence carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic script, you also need an international driving permit or a notarised translation, because the country is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention. What the rental agreement covers

Insurance here is worth understanding before you sign anything. As of 05.09.2026 there is no compulsory third-party motor insurance for owners of locally registered cars: the government put its introduction into the autumn 2026 legislative work plan, with no date named. A rental car carries local plates, so the compulsory insurance scheme for foreign-registered vehicles does not apply to it. Theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard rental insurance, so keep bags out of sight. The deposit and any excess are set out in the rental agreement and agreed when booking.

Speed limits, seat belts and fines

Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers; the law does not require them in the rear. Phones are hands-free only, with both hands on the wheel. Children under three travel in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight in the rear, and a child under six may not be left alone in a parked car. Street parking in the capital is zonal and starts at 1 lari an hour after the first 15 minutes free, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or at parking meters; underground car parks in the centre charge more, and an unpaid session is fined 50 lari. Tolls are the simplest line in the budget: the Roads Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that use of the country's international and domestic roads remains free of charge, with no change planned, and there are no vignettes or transponders to buy. The Ricoti section of the E60, opened on 29.12.2025 — 52 km with 51 tunnels and 97 bridges — is free as well.

Fines, alcohol and the winter tyre rule

Police fines are paid in lari, and a 20% discount applies if you settle within 10 days — a detail worth knowing before you hand the car back. Speeding by 15–40 km/h costs 50 lari, over 40 km/h costs 150, a phone call is 30, an unfastened belt 40, running a red light 50, and unpaid parking 50. Driving without a licence is 500 lari. Accumulate 100 points in a year and the licence is withdrawn. The alcohol limit is 0.3‰ (0.03%), and children under 6 must never be left alone in a parked car. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March; in government-defined zones and specific weather, chains on at least two front wheels are required. If you collect a sedan in late November, check the fitment before you leave Tbilisi.

Mountain roads in winter

Gudauri sits at 2,200 m, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the capital, with the ski season running from early December to mid-April. The road is part of E117, and the Jvari pass closes when avalanche risk is declared. Check the road status on the morning of travel rather than the night before — a sedan handles the route fine when it is open, and winter tyres are the law, not an upgrade.

Two practical points from our side. First, book the model, not just the class: if the Passat's all-wheel drive matters to you for a winter run up to Gudauri, say so when you book, because it is the only sedan here with it. Second, longer bookings are cheaper — a week is the daily rate ×6 and a month is ×21, so a month of Passat at $2,520 costs less than the same car at the daily rate for the same period.
