Phuket ATV Tours: Prices, Pickup Zones and Age Rules
ATV and quad rental in Phuket comes as a guided ride priced per person: ฿1,495–1,895 for an hour on a 600 cc side-by-side, from ฿2,015 for an hour on a quad, and about ฿1,700 for a combo of quad and buggy. Below: riding time, pickup zones, routes, age and health rules, and what the ticket covers.
How ATV riding is sold on the island
All three ride formats on the island are guided, so what you buy is a seat on a ride, not a quad for a day on the roads. Three details shape that seat: the format, the machine and who may drive.
A guided ride, not a bike to take away
An ATV in Phuket is booked as a guided ride along a set trail, priced per person for a time slot rather than per machine for a day. A guide leads the group, the route is fixed in advance, and the price covers one rider or one passenger. The clock needs a second look: the one-hour side-by-side ride is sold as a two-hour trip, and the ticket also covers the hotel transfer and a safety briefing. The quad-and-buggy combo also runs to two hours, of which 105 minutes are spent at the controls — 60 on the quad and 45 in the buggy. Someone hoping to hire a quad bike and explore alone will not find that format among the three. When comparing offers, count the minutes behind the handlebars, not the hours on the ticket.
Quad, side-by-side or buggy
| Machine | Engine | Seats | Riding time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quad (ATV) | 200 cc | Rider; child 4–11 as passenger | 60 min in a combo |
| Side-by-side (UTV) | 600 cc | Up to 2 people | About 1 hour |
| Buggy | 650 cc | Not stated | 45 min in a combo |
| Quad at Pa Klok | Not stated | Rider; child 8–15 as passenger | 1 or 2 hour options |
Licence, experience and who may drive
The requirements riders meet are about age and health, not a driving licence: none of the three ride formats on the island mentions a licence at all. What they do set is a minimum age for the person at the wheel — 15 for the driver of a 600 cc side-by-side — and a plain statement that no prior riding experience is needed. Before the start, the guide runs a safety briefing on the side-by-side ride and a short ATV-and-buggy lesson on the combo, so a first-timer gets instruction before moving off. On the combo, riders are asked to follow the guide closely throughout the whole ride. In practice, the age rule is what decides the seating plan: on the side-by-side, a 14-year-old can come along, but only in the passenger seat.
Prices per person and per minute of riding
Three ride formats cover the market, at ฿1,495 to ฿2,015 per person. The real difference shows once the price is set against minutes at the controls.
Three formats side by side
| Format | Riding time | Price per person | Hotel transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side, 600 cc, driver | About 1 hour | ฿1,895 | Included, some zones extra |
| Side-by-side, 600 cc, passenger | About 1 hour | ฿1,495 | Included, some zones extra |
| Quad at Pa Klok | 1 hour | From ฿2,015 | Included, some zones extra |
| Quad 60 min + buggy 45 min | 105 minutes | About ฿1,700 | Not included |
The per-minute arithmetic
Per minute of riding, the combo costs roughly half of what a driver pays on either one-hour format. A driver on the side-by-side pays ฿1,895 for about an hour, close to ฿32 a minute; the passenger seat at ฿1,495 comes to about ฿25. The one-hour quad at Pa Klok, from ฿2,015, works out at about ฿34 a minute — the most expensive minute on the list. The combo at about ฿1,700 for 105 minutes on two machines lands near ฿16 a minute. Two hour options are offered at Pa Klok, yet the price is quoted only as a single starting figure, so the cost of the second hour is unknown until you ask. The combo's low rate has one condition behind it — no hotel transfer — and the taxi there and back has to be added before the comparison is fair.
Reading the hourly range
Across the market, an hour on an off-road machine costs ฿1,495–2,015 per person, and the two ends of that range describe different seats. The bottom figure, ฿1,495, is the passenger seat of a 600 cc side-by-side; the top, from ฿2,015, is an hour on your own quad at Pa Klok. The driver of a side-by-side, at ฿1,895, sits in between. Each figure is a price per person, so a group of four never pays one hourly rate — it pays four seats, and the mix of drivers and passengers sets the total. The combo, at about ฿1,700 for 105 minutes, sits inside the range on price while giving almost twice the riding time. Before judging any quote as cheap or dear, check which seat it is for and how many minutes of riding it buys.
Driver, passenger or two machines
A couple pays least by sharing one side-by-side: ฿1,895 for the driver plus ฿1,495 for the passenger makes ฿3,390 for the pair. Two people who both want to drive pay ฿3,790 on two side-by-sides, and two riders on separate quads at Pa Klok pay from ฿4,030 — ฿640 more than the shared side-by-side. One side-by-side takes at most two people, so a couple fits on a single machine. In my view, the choice comes down to whether both partners actually want to steer. An ATV tour in Phuket is short — about an hour of riding in either one-hour format — so the person who drives gets the whole experience, and the passenger gets the scenery at ฿400 less.
Hotel pickup and what each beach adds
Two of the three formats collect riders from their hotel, but each draws its free zone differently. Where you sleep can add nothing, ฿100–200, or a ฿1,000 van to the bill.
Pickup zones and surcharges
| Area | Side-by-side ride | Quad at Pa Klok |
|---|---|---|
| Kata, Karon, Patong | Free | Included |
| Kalim | Free | Not stated |
| Kamala | +฿100 | Included |
| Rawai, Nai Harn | +฿100 | +฿1,000 private van |
| Phuket Town | +฿100 | Not stated |
| Bang Tao, Surin | +฿200 | Included |
| Cape Panwa | +฿200 | +฿1,000 private van |
| Sirae | +฿200 | Not stated |
| Chalong, Layan, Nai Thon, Nai Yang, Mai Khao | Not stated | +฿1,000 private van |
Same beach, different bill
The hotel's location can swing the total by as much as ฿900 between two rides of similar price. A guest in Rawai pays ฿100 extra for pickup on the side-by-side ride but ฿1,000 for a private van to the quads at Pa Klok, which turns a ฿2,015 seat into a ฿3,015 morning for a solo rider. In Surin the picture flips: the side-by-side ride adds ฿200, while the Pa Klok transfer is included. Kata, Karon and Patong are the only beaches inside the free zone of both. The ฿1,000 van is a round-trip charge for the vehicle, which hurts a single rider most and matters much less when four friends share it. The ฿100 and ฿200 surcharges are not marked as per person or per booking — ask which before comparing totals for a group.
Rides without transfer
The quad-and-buggy combo comes without any hotel transfer, so riders make their own way to the pickup point, where the start time is 09:00. That missing transfer is the condition attached to its low per-minute rate, and it changes the maths for anyone staying far from the trail. The side-by-side ride runs two rounds a day, at 9:00 and 13:30, with return transfers from the hotel included. For the Pa Klok quads, the guide meets riders in the hotel lobby, and guests are asked to be there at least 10 minutes before the pickup time. Booking the combo without a plan for the taxi trades a cheaper ticket for a morning of logistics — price the ride both ways first.
Routes: the Big Buddha, Pa Klok mangroves and rubber plantations
Each format follows its own trail, and the terrain differs more than the prices do. Three routes cover the market: towards the Big Buddha, through Pa Klok, and across rubber plantations.
Three trails compared
| Trail | Terrain | Along the way | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
| Towards the Big Buddha | Dirt tracks, roads, jungle | Big Buddha, muddy pools after rain | Up to 2 per machine |
| Pa Klok, Thalang | Mud, moderately bumpy trails | Mangroves, hidden beach, palm garden | Up to 20 riders |
| Plantation combo | Natural tracks, forest | Rubber plantations, forest workers | Not stated |
The Big Buddha trail
The side-by-side ride heads for the Big Buddha over a mix of dirt tracks, regular roads and jungle, on easy and rougher terrain. The route changes with the weather: after rain, the tracks fill with muddy pools. Part of the ride runs on ordinary roads, not only on dirt. Drivers must be at least 15 and passengers at least 5, an English-speaking guide leads the group, and the ticket includes injury insurance. A raincoat is handed out on rainy days, and cold water is included. Pack a change of clothes for the trip back: on a wet day, expect mud on the seats and on the riders.
Pa Klok and the mangrove coast
The quad ride at Pa Klok, in Thalang District, runs through dirt and muddy areas and along moderately bumpy trails into dense mangrove forest. Along the way the route passes an insect-eating plant, rubber plantations and a palm garden, and it reaches a hidden beach. Transfer is included from six west-coast beaches — Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao. Groups here can be large, with up to 20 people on one ride, so expect a convoy rather than a private outing. Seasonal fruit and drinking water are part of the trip, and so are a helmet and gloves. Anyone with a sensitive back should take the bumps seriously: back problems are on the list of conditions for which this ride is not recommended.
Rubber plantations and the buggy leg
The combo uses natural tracks through rubber plantations and untamed forest, and riders get to know local forest workers along the way. It is the only one of the three formats that switches machines mid-ride: 60 minutes on a 200 cc quad, then 45 minutes in a 650 cc buggy. The buggy's engine is more than three times the size of the quad's, and the tour starts with a lesson from the guide that covers both machines. Anyone looking for a buggy tour in Phuket will find it here as part of this combo rather than as a ride of its own. The combo excludes gratuities, so keep some small notes for the guide.
Age limits, health and riding with children
Age rules differ more between the three formats than prices do, and they decide which ride a family can take at all. Health limits come on top.
Age rules by format
| Rule | Side-by-side ride | Quad at Pa Klok | Quad + buggy combo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver | 15 and over | Not stated; 8–15 may not drive | Not stated; 4–11 may not drive |
| Passenger | From 5 | 8–15, child ticket | 4–11, passenger only |
| Upper limit | Not stated | 50 | Not stated |
| Child price | Not stated | Not stated | 3–8: 75%; 0–2: free |
Health and sobriety
- Pregnancy: the Pa Klok quad ride is not recommended for pregnant travellers, and pregnancy is listed among the conditions not allowed.
- Back problems: the same ride is not recommended for people with back problems.
- Heart conditions: at Pa Klok, riders with heart problems or other serious medical conditions should not join.
- Alcohol and drugs: riding under their influence is not allowed at Pa Klok — plan the beach bar for the evening after.
- Age ceiling: Pa Klok caps riders at 50, so a group with older members should ask about the other two formats, where no upper limit is stated.
A family budget for four
For two adults with children aged 6 and 10, the side-by-side ride is the only format open to the whole family with transfer included. Each adult drives one machine at ฿1,895 and each child rides as a passenger at ฿1,495, which makes ฿6,780 on two side-by-sides. The Pa Klok quads are closed to this family, because riders there must be at least 8. The combo costs less on paper: about ฿1,700 for each adult, the same for the 10-year-old (children over 8 pay the adult rate, though up to 11 they ride only as passengers), and 75% — about ฿1,275 — for the 6-year-old, roughly ฿6,375 in total. The ฿405 saving comes without a transfer, so for a family staying any distance away, a taxi there and back can wipe it out.
What the price includes, and what it leaves out
The ticket covers more than the ride, but not everything. The list of inclusions is similar across formats; the gap is in what happens if the machine gets damaged.
Included in the ticket
- Guide: an English-speaking guide on the side-by-side ride and a tour guide at Pa Klok lead the group, and on the combo a guide gives the opening lesson.
- Safety gear: a helmet and gloves at Pa Klok, and safety equipment with a briefing on the side-by-side ride.
- Water and snacks: cold water on the side-by-side ride, drinking water and seasonal fruit at Pa Klok.
- Raincoat: both transfer-included rides hand out a raincoat when the day turns wet.
- Not included: lunch, dinner and personal expenses — and on the combo, tips — so budget a meal after the ride.
Insurance and damage to the machine
On both rides with transfer, insurance covers people, not the machine. The side-by-side ride is covered by injury insurance, while damage to the vehicle caused by reckless riding is excluded and riders are liable for the costs; the Pa Klok ride insures rider and passenger, with the explicit note that damage to the quad is not covered. For the combo, insurance is not mentioned at all. A dent or broken part after a fall can therefore land on the rider. In my view this is the single most important question on any quad ride: before the start, ask what a scratch or a cracked panel would cost, and take a photo of the machine before you sit on it.
Clothes, rain and mud
The clothing advice for a muddy trail is short: closed shoes or trainers, sunscreen, mosquito spray and a camera. Flip-flops are a poor match for a footrest and a puddle, and the jungle sections bring insects. Both rides with transfer issue a raincoat on wet days, so both are planned to run in wet weather. After rain the Big Buddha trail fills with muddy pools, and the Pa Klok route runs through dirt and muddy areas. Leave valuables at the hotel, pack a dry bag for the phone, and bring a towel and a spare shirt for the ride home.
Times and cancellation
All three formats can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start. On the side-by-side ride, a booking can also be moved to another date within the same window with a full refund of anything paid, while a cancellation later than 24 hours before the start is not refunded. The side-by-side runs two rounds a day, at 9:00 and 13:30, and the combo's pickup starts at 09:00. A morning slot leaves the afternoon free for the beach, and the 13:30 round suits late risers. If the forecast looks doubtful, decide the day before: the 24-hour line is the last point at which changing plans costs nothing.
Checklist before booking a ride
Most surprises on a quad ride come from something nobody asked about. Seven points, settled before booking, cover nearly all of them.
Seven things to settle
- Riding minutes: ask how long you actually ride, not how long the trip lasts — two hours on the ticket can mean one at the controls.
- Who drives: check the driver's minimum age — 15 on the side-by-side — before promising a teenager the wheel.
- Pickup: confirm whether your hotel area is free, ฿100–200 extra or a ฿1,000 van, and whether the surcharge is per person.
- Children: match each child's age to the format — from 5 on the side-by-side, from 8 at Pa Klok, 4–11 as passengers on the combo.
- Damage: ask what damage to the machine would cost, since rider insurance stops at injuries.
- Clothing: pack closed shoes, sunscreen, mosquito spray and a spare shirt; expect mud after rain.
- Cancellation: note the 24-hour deadline in your phone, because a later change is not refunded.
