Cycling in Barcelona: Hourly and Day Rates, Bike Types and the Metro
Bicycle rental in Barcelona starts from €4 an hour for a city bike, and a full day costs €5–20 for a standard bike, €16.50 for a three-gear city bike and up to €32 for a fat-tyre e-bike. Below: when the day rate beats the hourly one, which bike suits whom, multi-day prices, deposits and taking a bike on the metro.
What an hour, half a day and a full day cost
Bikes in the city are sold by the hour, by blocks of two, three and six hours, by the day and by the extra day, and the cheapest unit depends on how long you really plan to ride.
Prices by rental length
| Rental | Classic city bike, 3 gears | Per hour | Touring bike, 9 gears |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | €7.95 | €7.95 | €9.95 |
| 2 hours | €9.95 | €4.98 | €11.95 |
| 3 hours | €12.50 | €4.17 | €13.50 |
| 6 hours | €15.50 | €2.58 | €14.95 |
| 1 day | €16.50 | — | €19.95 |
| Every extra day | €12.95 | — | €17.95 |
Why the first hour is the dearest
The first hour on a classic city bike costs €7.95, and the second adds only €2.00, so two hours come to €9.95 — less than €5 an hour. Three hours cost €12.50 and six hours €15.50, which brings the rate down to about €2.58 an hour. In other words, most of what you pay goes on taking the bike out at all, not on the time itself. The full day at €16.50 is just €1.00 more than six hours, so anyone who expects to ride past lunch should simply take the day. Is a single hour ever the right choice? Yes, for a short spin along the beach or a quick errand, and the cheapest hourly offers on the seafront start from €4. But for a proper ride across the city, my advice is to plan in blocks of three hours or more and stop watching the clock.
Reading the range from €5 to €32
The price table on this Rent-Trip page sets out market rates for bikes in the city, and the spread is wide. A standard bike costs €5–20 a day depending on the shop and the bike, a classic three-gear city bike €16.50, and the most expensive daily rate in the table, €32, belongs to a fat-tyre bike with electric assistance. These are different products rather than one bike at different prices. The figure at the bottom of the range usually means a basic bike with no extras, while the middle buys a well-kept city bike with a lock and a map. Before you compare two offers, check what comes with the bike: some shops include a helmet or a child seat, others charge for each item separately.
Half a day or a full day
For a classic city bike the difference between three hours and a full day is €4.00, and between six hours and a day just €1.00. A touring bike behaves in an unusual way: six hours cost €14.95, slightly less than the city bike's six hours, while its full day is €19.95. So if you want a touring bike for an afternoon ride up to the hills, the six-hour block is the better buy; if you want it from morning to evening, the day rate covers you. In both cases the rule is the same — work out when you will actually return the bike, then pick the smallest unit that covers that time.
City, touring, tandem, cargo or a child's bike
Shops in Barcelona offer more than one kind of bike, and the right choice depends on the route, the group and how much you want to pedal.
Six bikes compared
| Bike | What it is | 1 hour | 1 day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic city bike | retro upright bike, 3 gears | €7.95 | €16.50 |
| Touring bike | 9 gears and front suspension | €9.95 | €19.95 |
| Tandem | one bike for two riders | €16.50 | €30.00 |
| Cargo bike | front box that fits three small children | €16.50 | €30.00 |
| Child's bike | sturdy kids' bike | €6.95 | €14.95 |
| Fat-tyre bike | wide tyres with electric assistance | €23.50 | €32.00 |
City or touring: flat seafront or hills
The classic city bike, with an upright position and three gears, is made for the flat parts of town: the old town, the Eixample grid and the long seafront promenade. It is the default choice and the cheapest adult bike in the range. The touring bike adds nine gears and front suspension, which matter once the road starts to climb or the surface gets rough. Barcelona rises from the sea towards the hills, so the extra gears earn their €3.45 a day if your plan includes the upper districts or a longer ride beyond the centre. For city bike rental in Barcelona that stays near the beach and the old town, three gears are enough. If you are unsure, choose by your route rather than by the price: a lower gear on a climb saves more effort than any discount saves money.
Tandem and cargo bike for pairs and families
A tandem costs €30.00 a day, against €33.00 for two classic city bikes, so a couple saves €3.00 and rides as a single unit. Over short periods the saving disappears: one hour on a tandem costs €16.50, while two city bikes cost €15.90. The tandem pays off from three hours, when it costs €23.00 against €25.00 for two separate bikes. A tandem also asks for teamwork — both riders pedal, and the one in front steers and brakes. The cargo bike has the same prices and serves another need: its open front box fits up to three small children, so the whole family moves together. That is the main alternative to a child seat, which fits only one child.
Children: their own bike or a seat
A child's bike costs €6.95 an hour and €14.95 a day, and every extra day €10.95, so a child who can already ride costs a little less than an adult. Younger children ride in a child seat fitted to an adult bike. Seats on the market take a child from 9 to 22 kg and come with a three-point harness, adjustable footrests and side protection. A seat is rented as an accessory, at €3.50 a day, so two adults on city bikes with one seat pay €36.50 for the day, against €63.00 for two city bikes and a cargo bike. In my view the seat is the sensible option for one small child, and the cargo bike only makes sense with two or three of them.
Where the fat-tyre bike fits
The fat-tyre bike sits at the top of the price range because it is not a pedal-only bike: it has electric assistance, and it costs the same as a standard e-bike in the same shop — €23.50 for an hour and €32.00 for a day. Its wide tyres make it stable and eye-catching, which is why people choose it for the look and for photos rather than for range. If you want electric help, compare it with the e-bikes section of the site, where e-bikes are covered on their own. If you are happy to pedal, a city or touring bike costs half as much or less.
Several days or a week: the extra-day rate
A bike can be rented by the hour, by the day, by the week and for longer, and from the second day the price per day falls.
Multi-day prices
| Bike | 1 day | Every extra day | 3 days | 7 days | Per day over a week |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic city bike | €16.50 | €12.95 | €42.40 | €94.20 | €13.46 |
| Touring bike | €19.95 | €17.95 | €55.85 | €127.65 | €18.24 |
| Tandem or cargo bike | €30.00 | €27.50 | €85.00 | €195.00 | €27.86 |
| Child's bike | €14.95 | €10.95 | €36.85 | €80.65 | €11.52 |
How the extra-day rate works
The first day is charged at the full rate, and every following day at a lower one: €12.95 instead of €16.50 for a classic city bike, a saving of €3.55 a day. Over a week that adds up — seven separate days would cost €115.50, while one seven-day rental costs €94.20, or €21.30 less. The discount is smaller on other bikes: a touring bike drops by only €2.00 a day and a tandem by €2.50. The key point is that the lower rate applies only to one continuous rental. If you return the bike in the evening and take another the next morning, each day starts again at the full price.
Keeping a bike overnight
A multi-day rental means the bike stays with you between rides, which changes your responsibilities. Rentals usually include a lock, and the renter is answerable for theft and damage until the bike is back in the shop. So before booking a week, ask yourself where the bike will spend the night: an inner courtyard, a hotel storage room or your apartment hall are fine, a lamppost in the street is not. If your accommodation cannot store a bike, daily rentals cost more but leave the night-time risk with the shop.
Delivery to your hotel
Some shops will bring the bikes to your hotel or apartment and collect them at the end, but only with advance booking and for an extra fee with a minimum charge. The service covers a list of postcodes in central Barcelona, and for addresses outside it the shop gives a separate quote. For one or two bikes on a short rental the minimum fee can be higher than the rental itself, so delivery makes sense mainly for a group or a family taking several bikes for a few days. For everyone else, walking to the nearest shop remains the cheapest start.
Old town or seafront: where to pick up
Bike rental shops cluster in two areas: the old town, Ciutat Vella, and the seafront around the Olympic Port in Vila Olímpica.
Two areas compared
| Area | Where | Hours | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ciutat Vella | Carrer de Montserrat and Carrer dels Tallers | daily from 9:00 | full-day rides across the city |
| Vila Olímpica | Carrer de Salvador Espriu, 100 m from Nova Icària beach | Sun–Thu 10:30–14:00 and 16:30–19:00, Fri–Sat until 20:00 | short rides along the beaches |
The old town: a start for the whole city
The shops in Ciutat Vella sit close to the Rambla and the Raval, in the middle of the historic centre. From there you can head towards the Gothic Quarter, the Eixample or the waterfront within minutes. Every rental in these shops comes with a map of the cycle lane network, which is more useful than it sounds: it shows where you can ride separated from traffic. They open every day from 9:00, so an early start lets you cover the main sights before the streets get busy. Bike rental in Barcelona that starts here suits a full day with a loose plan and several stops.
The seafront: flat and close to the beach
The seafront shops in Vila Olímpica are 100 metres from Nova Icària beach, in front of the Olympic Port, and about a five-minute walk from Barceloneta beach. The promenade here is one of the widest and flattest in the city, which makes it the easiest place to get used to a bike. Hourly rentals on this stretch start from €4. Mind the opening hours: one seafront shop closes between 14:00 and 16:30, so plan to pick up and return the bike outside that break. A useful extra here is free supervised storage for bags and shoes while you ride — handy if you come straight from the beach or from checking out of your hotel.
Which one to choose
Choose the old town if your day is about sights and districts, and the seafront if it is about the beaches and the coast. A short ride of an hour or two is easier from the seafront, where the route is flat and needs no map. A long ride with climbs or a loop through several districts is easier from the centre, where the shops open earlier and stay open through the lunch hours.
ID, deposit, lock and what the renter answers for
The documents and conditions behind renting a bike in Barcelona are short, but they shift a real share of the risk onto the rider.
What to bring
Bring an identity document — shops ask for a valid ID, and no driving licence is involved. Be prepared for a deposit. Practice differs from shop to shop: one seafront shop rents bikes with no deposit at all, against ID only, while a centre shop takes credit card details as a guarantee or a cash deposit, with the amount fixed when you sign the rental contract. A card with an available limit is the safest choice, because it covers both cases. If you pay a cash deposit, keep the contract or receipt until the money is back in your hand.
What comes with the bike and what costs extra
- Included: a lock with keys and a map of the city's cycle lane network.
- Child helmet: included at one seafront shop, which also stocks children's sizes.
- Accessories at €3.50 a day each: helmet, child seat, phone mount, repair kit, pump and panniers.
- Helmet rules: rental shops describe the helmet as not compulsory in the city but advisable, and a child should always wear one.
Theft, damage and early return
Under typical rental terms the rider receives the bike, the key and the lock in working order and must return them in the same condition. If the bike is stolen or damaged beyond normal wear, the rider pays for the repair or replacement, and if that cost exceeds the deposit, the rider settles the difference. A lost lock key costs €15. Traffic fines for riding against the rules are paid by the rider too, so stick to the cycle lanes and respect pedestrian zones. Two more clauses are worth knowing: no refund is given if you bring the bike back early, and the booking deposit for a rental is not refunded. Finally, the bike is meant for use within the city; if you plan a ride beyond it, say so when booking.
Bikes on the metro and trains, and why Bicing is out
A rented bike can travel with you on public transport, which opens routes that would be too long to ride both ways.
When a bike may go on the metro
Regular bikes travel free on the metro outside rush hours. The rule covers ordinary bicycles and e-bikes, and the permitted times are clear:
- Weekends and public holidays: all day.
- Weekdays: from 5:00 to 7:00, from 9:30 to 17:00 and after 20:30.
- Rush hours on weekdays: 7:00–9:30 and 17:00–20:30, when a full-size bike stays off the metro.
In practice this means you can ride uphill by metro in the middle of the day and come down on the bike, or ride out along the coast in the morning and take the metro back in the late evening. If you are in the middle of a long ride at 17:00 on a weekday, plan to finish it on two wheels or wait until 20:30.
Local trains, buses and trams
Bicycles and e-bikes also travel free on the Rodalies de Catalunya local trains, on one condition — the train must not be too full. That makes day trips along the coast possible: ride one way and return by train. Buses and trams are different: only folding bikes are allowed, and only if they do not obstruct other passengers. A standard rented bike will not fit that rule, so plan your route around the metro and the trains, not the bus network.
Why the public bike scheme is not an option
The city's public bike scheme, Bicing, is only for residents. Registration needs a Spanish address and an official identification number, and the membership card is sent to your home within 8 days. Free-floating sharing with app-unlocked bikes is not available to visitors either. That is why bike hire in Barcelona for tourists means a private rental shop: you book online or walk in, and pick up the bike at the agreed time. The upside is choice — a shop offers several types of bike, accessories and children's sizes that a public scheme does not.
Key points before you ride
Five things to remember
- Price: from €4 an hour on the seafront; a classic city bike costs €7.95 for an hour and €16.50 for a day, and six hours cost almost as much as the day.
- Bike type: three gears for the flat centre and seafront, a touring bike with nine gears for climbs, a tandem or cargo bike for pairs and families.
- Several days: the extra-day rate applies only to one continuous rental — a week on a city bike costs €94.20.
- Documents: a valid ID and a card for a possible deposit; the rider answers for theft and damage, and a lost key costs €15.
- Metro: bikes ride free outside 7:00–9:30 and 17:00–20:30 on weekdays and all day at weekends; Bicing is for residents only.
