Licence, documents and the low-emission zone

EU and EEA licences are valid in Spain while they are in date and need no international permit. Holders of licences issued outside the EU and EEA are advised by the DGT to obtain an international driving permit before the trip and to keep it with the passport and the national licence; once six months have passed since establishing Spanish residency, that national licence is no longer accepted. The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has operated since 15.09.2025, restricting cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona between 7:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday on working days, with 24 days a year allowed inside the restricted hours without a permit. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a van with the sticker is not restricted. Ask for the badge to be confirmed before you collect, and check the rest of the paperwork against the rental agreement.

Roads, tolls and what actually costs money

The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme between Montgat and Palafolls, the usual run from Barcelona-El Prat up to Blanes and Lloret de Mar, lost its barriers on the same date. Tolls survive only on the C-16 and on the southern stretch of the C-32 towards Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell — nothing on the routes along the coast here. Speed limits are 120 km/h on autopista and autovía and 90 km/h on carretera convencional such as the GI-614 and C-260. Diesel averages 1.922 EUR per litre across the province of Girona, with 266 filling stations and a minimum of 1.718 EUR; the coastal strip sits at 1.932 EUR across 59 stations.
