North to Bang Saen, Si Racha and Laem Chabang

Bang Saen sits 47.6 km away, 38 minutes on the road, and Si Racha 28.3 km, about 23 minutes — both are straightforward runs on Highway 3 Sukhumvit, the free alternative to the tolled Motorway 7. Laem Chabang is 20 km out, 19 minutes, if you are meeting someone off a ship. In the other direction, south-east, Rayong is 58.6 km and 46 minutes away, and Chanthaburi at 169.7 km and 129 minutes is a genuine day out rather than a quick hop. Fill up before you leave: diesel B7 was ฿41.44 a litre at the last Bangchak reading, and premium diesel ฿50.05.

Islands, and the one trip a pickup cannot make

Koh Larn is 7.5 km off the coast, and the ferry from Bali Hai Pier takes passengers only — the pickup stays parked at the pier while you cross. The same applies to Koh Samet, reached from Ban Phe Pier 79.6 km and 62 minutes away, while the Koh Chang ferries take cars — taking a rental car across is agreed when booking. Hua Hin is 321.1 km and 229 minutes, which is a long day rather than a comfortable one, and Bangkok at 145.7 km and 102 minutes is better done overnight than returned the same evening. The 4x4 Rangers add grip in the wet season, though the extra grip is for rain-slicked tarmac, not for tracks or beaches — off-road and beach driving are prohibited by the rental agreement.
