Licences issued in the EU and EEA remain valid in Spain for as long as they are in force, with no international permit required. Drivers from outside the EU or EEA need a licence that is still valid, and the DGT recommends carrying an International Driving Permit alongside the national one. A licence not printed in Spanish is accepted either with an official certified translation into Spanish or if it follows the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.

A nine-seat van follows the same speed limits as any car: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on a conventional carretera, and 20, 30 or 50 km/h inside the city depending on the street. Spain runs a points system, and fines for moving offences land on the driver: speeding is graded at 100 EUR without points up to 600 EUR with six, holding a phone in your hand costs 200 EUR and six points, and a child without the right child seat costs 200 EUR and four points. Child restraints are required for anyone under 135 cm.
