Cycling in Bangkok: Day Rates, Hourly Hire and Bang Krachao

Fleet manager
Published Updated

Bicycle rental in Bangkok costs from ฿40 a day for a basic park bicycle to ฿300 for a branded hybrid or comfort model, with ฿50 an hour where hourly hire exists. Below: when a full day beats the hourly rate, how the four bike types differ, what a day on Bang Krachao costs and what to hand over at pickup.

Two price zones: park bikes and branded city bikes

The market splits into two clear levels — cheap park bicycles hired until closing time and branded models hired by the hour or for a full day — and the gap between them is wide.

Market rates by unit

UnitBikePriceKit in the price
DayBasic park bike฿40–80Not stated
DayBranded hybrid, mountain or comfort฿300Helmet, lights, lock, bag
HourBranded bike฿50None; ฿10 an hour per item
OptionalAccident cover฿50Accident, medical, liability

Why one day costs ฿40 and another ฿300

The cheapest full-day hire costs ฿40 and the dearest ฿300 — a spread of 7.5 times for the same unit of time. The low end belongs to park and riverside stands, where the daily rate runs from ฿40 to ฿80 and depends on the condition of the machine, a simple city cycle without a named model. The ฿300 end is a branded Trek or Schwinn from a city shop, handed over with a helmet, lights, a lock and a carry bag included. So the two figures for bicycle rental in Bangkok describe different products rather than a discount and a premium on one product. In my view the fair comparison is kit against kit: a ฿40 cycle plus a helmet you bring yourself is a different outing from a ฿300 model that arrives fully equipped.

Where the ฿80 middle sits

A typical park bicycle costs ฿80 for the day, which is the rate right at the boat landing on Bang Krachao, the green island across the river from Khlong Toei. At the stand beside the park entrance, within walking distance of that landing, the same kind of cycle costs ฿40 — half the price for the same outing. Across these stands the price moves with the state of the machine, so a better-kept frame asks more and a worn one less. Even the ฿80 rate is just over a quarter of the branded daily price. Before paying, test the brakes and the chain on the spot: a second one from the rack is easier to ask for at the counter than halfway round the park.

Hour or a whole day: where the switch happens

Hourly hire looks cheap at ฿50, but the kit is charged on top while the day rate already includes it, so the right choice depends on how long the ride will last.

What the day rate includes and the hourly rate leaves out

A ฿300 daily hire comes with four items — a helmet, lights, a lock and a carry bag — while a ฿50 hour comes with the bicycle alone. Each of those items can be added to an hourly hire for ฿10 an hour, so a helmet and a lock lift the hourly price to ฿70, and the full set to ฿90. That surcharge is easy to miss when comparing bike rental in Bangkok by the headline figure, because the hourly number is the bare-frame number. Optional accident cover adds another ฿50 whichever format you choose. Lights matter more than they seem: a long ride can stretch into the evening, and they are the one item a bare hourly rental lacks when the light goes. Decide on the kit first and on the tariff second, not the other way round.

Cost by hours on a ฿50 hourly bike

HoursBike onlyHelmet and lockFull kitDay rate
2฿100฿140฿180฿300
3฿150฿210฿270฿300
4฿200฿280฿360฿300
5฿250฿350฿450฿300
6฿300฿420฿540฿300

The break-even rule

Without extras the daily rate pays off from six hours, because 6 × ฿50 equals the ฿300 daily price. Add a helmet and a lock and the threshold falls to five hours, since 5 × ฿70 = ฿350 is already above ฿300; with all four items it falls to four hours, as 4 × ฿90 = ฿360. Below those limits the hourly tariff is cheaper — a three-hour loop with a helmet and a lock costs ฿210, ฿90 less than the full-day price. Beyond them every extra hour on the hourly plan is money spent for nothing the day rate would not have given. Switching from hourly to daily halfway through is not something the terms promise, so if the ride may run past four hours with the full kit, take the day at the counter.

Hybrid, mountain, comfort or a children's bike

Four branded models carry one day rate, so the choice among them comes down to riding position and terrain rather than price; children's bikes are offered as well.

Four branded models at one day rate

ModelTypeDay rateSuits
Trek LivestrongHybrid฿300Mixed streets and park paths
Schwinn FrontierMountain bike฿300Unpaved stretches
Schwinn Sierra GSComfort฿300Upright riding on flat roads
Schwinn Streamliner 1Super comfort฿300Slow loops with frequent stops

Matching the type to flat roads

The four types run from sporty to relaxed, yet all of them cost ฿300 for a full hire, so nothing is saved by choosing the plainer one. The capital is flat, and the paths of the Bang Krachao park are described as flat and mostly paved, with only a few unpaved stretches. On that surface a hybrid such as the Trek Livestrong rolls quickest, while the Schwinn Sierra GS and Streamliner 1 trade speed for an upright seat that suits a slow loop with photo stops. The Schwinn Frontier, the mountain bike of the four, earns its heavier tyres only on the unpaved sections. If the route mixes city streets with the island, the hybrid is the sensible middle; for a gentle circuit with a stop at the bird-watching tower, a comfort model is easier on the back.

Rider height and children's bikes

The shop with the branded models asks for each rider's height at booking, which is how a frame is matched to the person before the ride rather than at the counter. Children's bikes are part of the same range, so a family does not have to split between a city shop and a park stand. Frame sizes and the age range of the children's bikes are not stated, which leaves height as the only sizing signal. Two adults on branded models pay ฿600 in total before any accident cover; the children's price is not given, so ask for it together with the booking. Send the heights of everyone, children included, in one message — on a three-hour loop a frame that fits matters more than the choice between hybrid and comfort.

Bang Krachao by bicycle: ferry, park gate and a day for ฿60–120

Bang Krachao is where the cheapest bicycles in the area are rented: a green loop of the Chao Phraya south of the centre, about 16 square kilometres, with flat and mostly paved paths through its park.

Reaching the pier and crossing the river

Riders reach Bang Krachao by boat from Wat Khlong Toei Nok Pier, a crossing of about five minutes that runs from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. The pier is roughly a 30-minute walk from MRT Khlong Toei station, or a short taxi ride for anyone who would rather not walk in the heat. Two kinds of boat make the crossing: a larger one at ฿20 each way and a smaller one at ฿10. The island lies in Phra Pradaeng district of Samut Prakan province, enclosed by a bend in the river and a canal, which is why it feels far removed from the city it faces. Cycles are rented on the island side, so there is nothing to carry across — travel light and plan the return to reach the landing before the 8 p.m. cut-off.

Pier rental or the park-gate shop

Island hire happens in two places: right at the Bang Krachao landing for about ฿80 a day, or at a stand on the right-hand side of the Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park gate for about ฿40. The gate is within walking distance of the landing, so the ฿40 saving is there for anyone willing to walk a little first. Both kinds of stand may ask for an ID while the bicycle is out, and a local ID card is accepted instead of a passport; it is handed back when the bike returns. Prices at these stands also move with the condition of the frame, and even the top island rate leaves Bang Krachao bike rental at under a third of the branded city price. Bring a second form of ID so the passport can stay in your pocket.

Roads, the park and the weekend market

Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park is open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily with no entrance fee, and a loop around it takes about three hours in the saddle. The paths are mostly paved and all flat, with a few unpaved sections, and the park has a bird-watching tower — more than 100 bird species still live in what is called the green lung of Bangkok. The island covers about 12,000 rai across six sub-districts, and a conservation programme aims to keep 60 per cent of it free of development, so the ride stays green beyond the park fence. Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market, with covered stalls of street food and handicrafts, opens only on Saturdays and Sundays. Allow at least half a day, and pick a weekend if the market belongs on the route.

Opening hours, same-day return and the cool months

Opening times differ between the city shop and the island, there is no overnight hire on branded bikes, and the season changes how a ride feels — three things to settle before choosing a date.

Planning a day between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The branded-model shop hands out bicycles from 9 a.m. every morning, and each ride starts and finishes at its own office. On Bang Krachao the clock is wider: the boats cross from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the park is open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., a window of 14 hours each. That difference matters for early riders, since a dawn loop of the park is possible on the island but not on a city rental that opens at nine. A three-hour park circuit started at 3 p.m. still ends before the gates close at 7 p.m.; one started at 4:30 p.m. does not. For the coolest hours, take an early boat to the island and rent at the gate, and keep the branded city bike for a ride that can begin mid-morning.

No overnight hire

Overnight rental is not available on the branded city bikes, so every hire ends on the day it starts. A weekend of riding therefore means two separate rentals: two days at ฿300 cost ฿600 per rider, and the helmet, lights, lock and bag come with each of them. Overnight terms at the island stands are not stated, and their hours sit inside the park's opening times in any case. The rule also shapes hotel plans — a rental cannot wait outside your hotel for an early start the next morning, so each morning's first ride begins at the shop. When a trip needs two days on two wheels, book both at once and collect at opening time: a 9 a.m. start gives the full hire you are paying for.

Which months suit cycling

November to January is the best time for a ride, when the weather is cool and mostly clear. From January to June humidity and air pollution are the main nuisances, and from June to October the chance of rain is higher. The season does not show up in rental prices, since no seasonal rates are stated for bicycles, so the choice of month is about comfort rather than cost. In the hot months a breathable shirt and an insulated water bottle are the basics worth packing, because a three-hour loop in humid air means a lot of sweating. Outside the cool season, plan the long part of the ride for the morning and treat the three-hour park loop as an upper limit rather than a starting point.

ID, deposit, helmet and accident cover

Bicycle rental terms are short: an ID while the bike is out, a helmet in the day rate and optional accident cover — none of it requires a driving licence.

What the rental keeps while you ride

A bicycle rental may ask for an ID card while the cycle is out and returns it at drop-off; a local ID is accepted in place of a passport. No driving licence appears in the rental terms for bicycles, unlike those for scooters and motorcycles. To rent a bike in Bangkok, then, the paperwork is the ID and, for the branded models, the rider's height at booking. The helmet is a separate question: it comes with the ฿300 daily hire but costs ฿10 an hour on hourly hire, so on the hourly plan it is a choice rather than a default. Treat that ฿10 as part of the hourly price — on a three-hour ride it adds ฿30, less than the ฿40 return fare on the large boat to Bang Krachao.

What ฿50 of accident cover pays for

  • Personal accident: the rider's own injury while on the rented bicycle, the first of three items in the optional package.
  • Medical expenses: treatment costs after a fall or a collision, the second item inside the same ฿50 cover.
  • Liability: damage or injury caused to other people, the third item and the one that matters most among cars.
  • Price: ฿50 equals one hour on a branded model, a sixth of its daily rate, or more than a full hire of a ฿40 park cycle.
  • Limits: sums insured and exclusions are not stated, so ask for both before paying for the cover.

When a scooter makes more sense

A scooter starts from ฿160 a day in the city, so a ฿300 branded bicycle costs almost twice as much as the cheapest motorised option. Price is not the deciding factor, though: rental terms for scooters expect a national licence plus an international permit that covers motorcycles, while pedal hire needs only an ID. For crossing the city between districts in one day, a scooter covers distances a bicycle cannot; on Bang Krachao, where a ฿40 park cycle is the cheapest way round and the paths suit pedalling, the bicycle is the obvious pick. The scooter rental section sets out licence rules and weekly rates in detail. Choose by route rather than by price: island and park on pedals, cross-town errands on a motor.

Key points before you pick up a bike

Five figures to keep in mind

  • Price: a full hire costs ฿40–80 on a park cycle and ฿300 on a branded hybrid, mountain or comfort model; an hour costs ฿50.
  • Hour or day: with a helmet and a lock the day rate wins from five hours, and with the full kit from four.
  • Island: an island outing with the boat and a park-gate cycle costs ฿60–80, and the last crossing is at 8 p.m.
  • Documents: an ID is held while the bicycle is out; a driving licence is not part of bicycle terms.
  • Timing: city rentals go out from 9 a.m. with no overnight hire, and November to January is the most comfortable season.

FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a bicycle in Bangkok?

A basic park bicycle costs ฿40–80 for the day, with ฿80 the typical rate at the Bang Krachao boat landing and ฿40 at the stand by the park gate. Branded hybrid, mountain and comfort models cost ฿300 a day with a helmet, lights, a lock and a bag included, or ฿50 an hour without them.

Is it cheaper to rent a bike by the hour or for the day?

It depends on the hours and the kit. On a bare bike the ฿300 day pays off from six hours. With a helmet and a lock, each at ฿10 an hour on top of ฿50, the day is cheaper from five hours, and with all four items from four hours. A three-hour ride with a helmet and a lock costs ฿210.

Can I keep a rental bike overnight?

Not on the branded city bikes: overnight rental is not available, so the bike goes back on the day it was taken. Two days of riding mean two daily rentals, ฿600 per rider at ฿300 a day.

Do I need a driving licence to rent a bicycle?

No licence appears in bicycle rental terms. Stands may ask for an ID card while the bike is out and hand it back on return, and a local ID is accepted instead of a passport. Branded-bike shops also ask for each rider's height at booking.

Is a helmet included?

With a daily rental of a branded bike, yes, together with lights, a lock and a carry bag. On hourly hire each of these items costs ฿10 an hour extra.

Is there insurance for a rental bicycle?

Optional cover costs ฿50 and includes personal accident, medical expenses and liability towards other people. Sums insured and exclusions are not stated, so ask for them before paying.

How do I get to Bang Krachao to cycle?

Take the boat from Wat Khlong Toei Nok Pier, about a 30-minute walk or a short taxi ride from MRT Khlong Toei. The crossing takes about five minutes, runs from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and costs ฿20 each way on the larger boat or ฿10 on the smaller one. Bikes are rented on the island, so there is no need to bring one.

How long does it take to cycle around Bang Krachao?

About three hours for a loop of Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park, which is open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. with no entrance fee; the paths are flat and mostly paved. Allow at least half a day for the island, and go on a Saturday or Sunday if you want to see Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market.

When is the best time of year to cycle in Bangkok?

November to January, when the weather is cool and mostly clear. January to June brings humidity and air pollution, and June to October a higher chance of rain. No seasonal bicycle rates are stated, so the month changes comfort rather than price.
