Every rate includes the Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil required by Spanish law, and the car is supplied clean with a full tank. Fuel works full-to-full: you return it full, and anything missing plus a refuelling service fee is charged as the rental agreement states. Deposit, excess, delivery fees and discounts are never a headline figure on this page — they are agreed when booking and printed in the agreement, so ask the manager to read them out before the booking is fixed.

Four models sit at the bottom of the price list at €22 a day — Citroen C1, Ford Ka+, Kia Picanto and Peugeot 108, all 4-seat petrol hatchbacks with manual transmission. The Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 108 share a 1.0 L, 72 hp engine; the Kia Picanto runs a 67 hp 1.0 L, and the Ford Ka+ is the biggest of the four at 1.2 L and 85 hp.

How the hand-over is arranged

Nothing about the meeting point is left to chance, because the address you give is the address we drive to. You tell the manager where you are staying, which day and what time suits, and the booking is fixed around that. Anything beyond that, from the deposit to the excess to delivery fees, is set out in the rental agreement, so ask the manager to talk you through those lines before you confirm.

Costa Brava is a region rather than a single city, and the resorts sit far apart: GRO to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km, to Palafrugell 54.4 km, to Roses 75.2 km. If your flight lands late, say so when you book: the time is agreed with a manager, and the drop-off is arranged around your arrival.

Four seats or five: how many people are actually travelling

• 5-seat models: Dacia Sandero, Fiat Panda, Citroen C3, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia and Toyota Yaris Hybrid — the group choice.
• Rear bench: in the 4-seat cars the back row is a two-person bench, so a fifth passenger is not a squeeze but simply not allowed.

Petrol or hybrid, manual or automatic

In our economy car rental in Costa Brava, 15 of the 20 cars run on petrol with a manual gearbox, which is the cheapest way to drive here. Three are hybrids — Fiat 500, Fiat Panda and Toyota Yaris Hybrid — and only three come with an automatic transmission: Hyundai i10, Skoda Fabia and the Yaris Hybrid. The Yaris is also the strongest car in the range at 116 hp and the only 1.5 L engine, at €30 a day. Book an automatic early in summer — there are three in this class.

Below are the rules you actually drive by, the restricted zone in Girona and the gear you need to carry.

Speed limits on Costa Brava roads

• Autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33): 120 km/h for passenger cars — the AP-7 corridor from Barcelona to the French border is free of charge since 01.09.2021.
• Carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260 and similar): 90 km/h, and the road owner may raise it to 100 km/h.
• Urban streets: 30 km/h where there is one lane each way, 20 km/h on a single shared platform, 50 km/h where there are two or more lanes in one direction. Bus lanes do not count as lanes.
• Built-up stretches of motorway: 80 km/h as the general limit inside a town unless a sign says otherwise.

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona

The ZBE de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It operates 7–20 h, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted; there is a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours without a permit. Cameras read number plates and you do not have to display the sticker. Spanish fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car booked with us faces no restriction.

What to carry and what the fines are

• Seat belts and child seats: 200 EUR and 4 points; child restraints (SRI) are compulsory for children below 135 cm, and above that height the standard belt is allowed.
• Phone in hand: 200 EUR and 3–6 points — holding it costs the full 6 points.
• Alcohol: the general limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years; above 0.60 mg/l it becomes a criminal offence, and the fine runs 500–1000 EUR with 4–6 points.
• Speeding: 100 EUR without points up to 600 EUR with 6 points, depending on the limit and how far over you were; more than 60 km/h over the limit in town is a criminal offence.
• Red lights and STOP signs: 200 EUR and 4 points. Pay within 20 calendar days and the fine is halved.

The car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank — full-to-full, or lleno-lleno in Spanish.

Fuel, parking and tolls on an economy car rental

Fuel, parking and tolls are the three running costs that sit outside the daily rate on an economy car rental in Costa Brava. None of them is a fixed number: fuel moves with the pump, parking depends on where you leave the car, and the motorway corridor along the coast has changed status in recent years.

What fuel costs and how our full-to-full rule works

Petrol 95 E5 in the province of Girona averages €1.94 a litre, with a median of €1.979, a low of €1.718 and a high of €2.122 across 250 filling stations; along the coast the average is €1.956 across 58 stations. Diesel (Gasóleo A) runs at €1.922 average in the province and €1.932 on the coast, while Petrol 98 E5 sits at €2.106 and €2.131 respectively. Our cars are supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank — in Spain this is called lleno-lleno. If the tank comes back short, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement, and no other fuel option is offered.

Parking in Girona and along the coast

• Zona blava in Girona: paid Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at €1.20 an hour with a two-hour maximum (€2.40); the hours differ around Sant Narcís.
• Zona verda in Girona: non-residents pay the same €1.20 an hour for up to two hours; Pedreres–Vista Alegre runs Monday to Friday 9:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 plus Saturday 9:30–13:00, while Güell–Devesa runs Monday to Saturday 8:00–20:00.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces at roughly €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride: 200 spaces, free when you stay longer than 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre between 15 June and 15 September.
• Lloret de Mar, zona blava: zone A (Tarradellas, Francesc Macià) applies all year with seasonal hours; zone C (Fenals, Canyelles, Boadella, Can Lloranes) only from 23 June to 11 September.

Tolls and the low-emission zone

The AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera — the whole Barcelona–Girona–French border corridor — has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme (Montgat–Palafolls) and C-33 Barcelona–Montmeló lost their barriers in the same change. What remains of the Generalitat's tolls are the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 towards Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, neither of which sits on a Costa Brava route. The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has applied since 15.09.2025, 7:00–20:00 Monday to Friday on working days, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell; cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted, with an allowance of 24 days a year, and Spanish rental fleets carry the badge.

What the manager settles before the car is delivered

The rate you see — €22 to €30 a day, weekly from €132, monthly from €462 — is the rental itself. Everything else lives in the rental agreement: the deposit, the excess, any delivery fee and any discount. Ask about the excess and the deposit in the same conversation.

Changes, and what happens at hand-over

If your dates move, say so as early as you can — the class holds 20 cars and only two 5-seat automatics.

At hand-over the car comes clean with a full tank. Walk round it with the person delivering it and make sure every scratch and dent is written into the rental agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive away — both sides sign it and you keep a copy.
