Child seats are compulsory for children shorter than 135 cm, and the driver pays the fine — €200 and 4 points — if a child travels without one. Above 135 cm, a standard belt is allowed even under the age of 12. Speed limits on the roads you will actually use are 120 km/h on autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33) and 90 km/h on carretera convencional such as GI-614, GI-682 and C-260. The drink-drive limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, dropping to 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professionals; above 0.60 mg/l it stops being a fine and becomes a criminal offence. • Child seats (SRI): required for every passenger shorter than 135 cm; from 135 cm a standard belt is enough, even below the age of 12.
• Alcohol: 0.25 mg/l of breath for most drivers, 0.15 mg/l for novices in their first two years and for professionals.
• Red lights and STOP signs: €200 and 4 points.
• Wrong-way or restricted-lane driving: €200–€500 and up to 6 points.
• Fast payment: 50% off the fine if it is paid within 20 calendar days.

The DGT eco-sticker and the Girona low-emission zone

Girona runs a low-emission zone, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, in force since 15.09.2025. It covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and the Barri Vell, and it operates 7–20 on working days, Monday to Friday. Cars without a DGT environmental sticker that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; cameras read number plates, so there is nothing to display. A car from the Spanish rental fleet carries the DGT sticker, and a car with a sticker has no restriction in the zone. If you plan to drive into central Girona on a weekday, check the sticker before you set off — it is the difference between a normal run and a fine.

Fines, points and what to do about them

Speeding fines follow the DGT table and run from €100 with no points to €600 with 6 points, depending on the limit and how far over it you were. Exceeding the limit by more than 60 km/h in town or more than 80 km/h outside it is a criminal offence rather than an administrative fine. Parking and unpaid tolls are the responsibility of the owner or the renter of the car; moving violations, alcohol and drugs fall on whoever was driving. If a violation is not handed over at the roadside, the registered owner or renter is the one who answers until it is established who was at the wheel. Pay within 20 calendar days and the amount is halved.
