Sailing Yachts on the Costa Brava: Day Rates, Skippers and Marinas
Sailboat charter in Costa Brava starts from €86 a day for a 6.6-metre boat, and the middle of 36 sailing yacht models sits at €399. Below: when a skipper is optional and when it is required, what length, age and guest numbers do to the rate, which marinas the boats sail from and how a week costs across the season.
Skipper, licence and what a day rate covers
Before comparing prices, settle two questions — who will sail the boat and what the starting figure includes — because both change the total more than the choice of model does.
Three skipper arrangements
The Rent-Trip section on this page brings together 36 sailing yacht models, and the skipper arrangement is stated for 30 of them. On 14 models the skipper is optional: you may take the boat yourself if you hold the right licence, or add a skipper for the day. On 10 models a skipper is mandatory whatever papers you carry, and 6 more are priced with the skipper already on board. For the remaining 6 the arrangement is not stated, so ask before you plan around it. The optional group spans the widest range, from the Beneteau Oceanis 34 at €200 a day to the Beneteau Sense 50 at €1,350, with a middle of €399. The mandatory group has a middle of €425, only slightly higher, so a required skipper does not by itself mark a dearer boat. The mandatory group is not limited to big boats. It runs from the 6.6-metre Gouteron Ghibli to the 17-metre Beneteau Oceanis 55, and it includes mid-sized cruisers such as the Dufour 40 and the North Wind 38. For a first sailboat charter in Costa Brava without much experience at the helm, a boat where the skipper comes as standard removes the licence question entirely.
The licence rule by length
Spanish rules let you sail a sailboat of up to 6 metres for leisure without a nautical title. Every boat in this section is longer: the shortest, the Gouteron Ghibli, is 6.6 metres, so taking any of them without a skipper means holding a title that covers its length. The usual title for that is the PER, which covers boats up to 15 metres; longer yachts call for a higher title. Three models here pass that mark — the 16-metre Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 52.2 and the 17-metre Beneteau Oceanis 55 and Beneteau Sense 50. The first two already require a skipper, and on the Sense 50 the skipper is optional only for someone with a title for a 17-metre boat. If your licence comes from another country, ask whether it is accepted for the exact boat before you count on sailing it yourself.
Fuel, dates and one model meaning several boats
On 6 models the starting price already includes fuel: the Siltala Nauticat 11 m, Beneteau Oceanis 41.1, Dufour 430 Grand Large, Hallberg-Rassy Mistral 33, Beneteau Oceanis 55 and Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45. On the rest, assume fuel is extra until a quote says otherwise. Every day rate on this page is a starting price without dates — the lowest figure the boat goes out for, not a quote for your week. One model name can also cover several boats at different prices. The Beneteau Oceanis 40 is offered as two separate boats, one from €357 a day and a younger one from €514. The Dufour 44 Performance appears in Blanes from €457 and in Palamós from €600. Same model, different hull, base and age.
Day rates from €86 to €1,375
The 36 models start between €86 and €1,375 a day. The middle sits at €399 and the average at €491, pulled up by four boats above €1,100.
Day rate by boat length
The table groups the 36 models by length. Each band shows the number of models, the cheapest and dearest starting price and the middle value.
| Length | Models | Day rate from–to | Middle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10.5 m | 6 | €86–€443 | €235.50 |
| 10.5 to 12 m | 12 | €186–€600 | €353.50 |
| 12 to 13.5 m | 8 | €286–€1,269 | €449 |
| 13.5 m and over | 10 | €307–€1,375 | €612.50 |
Where most prices fall
Prices spread fairly evenly up to €700. Nine models start below €300, nine between €300 and €399, five between €400 and €499 and nine between €500 and €699. Only four start at €700 or more: the Beneteau Oceanis 55 at €1,143, the Beneteau Oceanis 41.1 at €1,269, the Beneteau Sense 50 at €1,350 and the Beneteau First 50 at €1,375. So for sailboat rental in Costa Brava, a budget of €300 to €700 a day covers 23 of the 36 models. Below €300 the choice is mostly 10- to 12-metre cruisers — the Beneteau Oceanis 34 at €200, the Hanse 345 at €257, the Beneteau Oceanis 38 at €261 — plus two older boats at the very bottom, the Gouteron Ghibli at €86 and the Siltala Nauticat at €186.
Length is not a price scale
Length sets the size of the boat, not the price. The 16-metre Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 52.2 starts at €307 a day, while the 12.5-metre Beneteau Oceanis 41.1 starts at €1,269 — about four times more for a boat 3.5 metres shorter. The gap has an explanation: the Oceanis 41.1 is priced with a skipper and fuel included, while the Sun Odyssey 52.2 requires a skipper and its figure does not say whether one is covered. Two boats of the same size can also sit far apart for reasons of class. The Beneteau Sense 50 and the Beneteau Oceanis 55 are both 17 metres long and start at €1,350 and €1,143. Within the 12- to 13.5-metre band the spread runs from €286 to €1,269. A length band tells you what fits on board; the unit, the skipper and the fuel tell you what the figure really buys.
Build year and the price gap
The build year is known for 28 models, and it splits them clearly. The seven boats launched before the turn of the century have a middle starting price of €350 a day. The eleven built in roughly the last decade have a middle of €566. The oldest boat here is the Hallberg-Rassy Mistral 33, now more than half a century old, and the youngest is the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380, launched only two seasons ago at €398 a day. Age does not always mean cheap. The Mistral 33 starts at €529, well above many newer cruisers, but its price includes a skipper and fuel, and it is a classic Swedish build rather than a production charter boat. Several older boats have also been refitted in recent seasons, which a quote should mention. If you compare an old boat with a new one, check whether the older figure includes the skipper before calling it a bargain.
Guests, cabins and price per head
Guest numbers range from 4 to 14 per boat, and the number that matters depends on whether you plan a day on the water or nights on board.
How many guests the boats take
Most models here take between 7 and 12 people on board. The table groups them by stated capacity, with examples and their starting prices.
| Guests | Models | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 6 | 8 | Gouteron Ghibli €86, Beneteau Oceanis 34 €200, Hanse 345 €257 |
| 7 to 8 | 12 | Beneteau Oceanis 331 €214, Beneteau Oceanis 41 €307, Dufour 40 €393 |
| 9 to 10 | 6 | AG4MC Consolation 37 €340, Beneteau Oceanis 37 €392, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 €566 |
| 11 to 12 | 9 | Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380 €398, Beneteau First 40.7 €400, Dufour 430 Grand Large €564 |
| 14 | 1 | Beneteau Oceanis 55 €1,143 |
Day guests versus berths
The guest figure is how many people may be on board for a sail. The berth figure is how many can sleep. They often differ. The Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 takes 12 guests but has 3 berths, and the Beneteau Oceanis 55 takes 14 guests by day with 6 berths. The Beneteau First 50 carries 10 people on deck and sleeps 6. Cabins are stated for 30 models: one boat has a single cabin, 5 have two, 17 have three, 6 have four, and the Beneteau Oceanis 500 has five cabins and 10 berths. For a week aboard with two families, start the search from cabins and berths, not from the guest number; for an afternoon swim stop, the guest number is the one that counts.
Price per guest
Dividing each day rate by the stated capacity gives a quick sense of value. The cheapest head on the water is on the Gouteron Ghibli at about €21.50 per guest, followed by the Beneteau Oceanis 331 at about €26.80 for 8 people. The middle of all 36 models is about €46.60 per guest. At the top, the Beneteau First 50 works out at €137.50 per person for 10. Small groups pay most for a large boat with a low capacity: the Beneteau Oceanis 40 is 12 metres long but takes 4 guests, so its €357 becomes about €89 a head. For a group of eight, a mid-sized cruiser such as the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349 at €257 lands near €32 each.
Cruisers, performance boats and classics
Almost every boat here is a production cruising yacht, but a handful are built for speed, tradition or comfort under engine, and each type suits a different trip.
Types side by side
| Type | Models | Day rate from–to | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruising yacht | 29 | €198–€1,350 | Beneteau Oceanis, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey, Dufour Grand Large |
| Cruiser-racer | 3 | €400–€1,375 | Beneteau First 40.7, Dufour 44 Performance, Beneteau First 50 |
| Classic | 2 | €350–€529 | North Wind 38, Hallberg-Rassy Mistral 33 |
| Motorsailer | 1 | €186 | Siltala Nauticat 11 m |
| Small sailboat | 1 | €86 | Gouteron Ghibli |
Beneteau accounts for 16 of the 36 models and Jeanneau for 8, with Dufour on 4. Between them, those three yards make up 28 of the 36 boats, so most quotes will compare one production cruiser with another.
Cruiser-racers
Three boats are built for performance as well as comfort. The Beneteau First 40.7 is 12 metres long, takes 12 guests and starts at €400. The Dufour 44 Performance is 13.67 metres with four cabins, from €457 in Blanes. The Beneteau First 50 is 15 metres long and, at €1,375, the dearest boat in the section, with a mandatory skipper. These hulls point higher into the wind and reward a crew that wants to trim sails. For a lazy day of swimming, a cruiser of the same length is usually the simpler choice.
Classics, a motorsailer and a small boat
The Hallberg-Rassy Mistral 33 and the North Wind 38 are classic yachts from earlier decades, both skippered, from €529 and €350. The Siltala Nauticat 11 m is a motorsailer with an 80 hp engine and a mandatory skipper, starting at €186 with fuel included — a boat for people who want to reach a cove under engine when the wind drops. At the small end, the 6.6-metre Gouteron Ghibli takes four people with a 5 hp outboard for €86. The AG4MC Consolation 37 is the one aluminium hull in the section, an 11.3-metre boat for 10 guests from €340.
Marinas from Blanes to El Port de la Selva
The base is known for 31 of the 36 models, and it spreads along the whole coast from Blanes in the south to El Port de la Selva near the French border.
Where the boats are based
| Marina | Models | Day rate from–to |
|---|---|---|
| Palamós | 11 | €350–€1,143 |
| Empuriabrava | 6 | €200–€307 |
| Roses | 6 | €86–€1,350 |
| Blanes | 3 | €443–€500 |
| L'Escala | 2 | €600–€1,375 |
| El Port de la Selva | 2 | €186–€529 |
| Platja d'Aro | 2 | €514–€1,269 |
The Dufour 44 Performance is counted in both Blanes and Palamós, as it sails from each.
Choosing a base by route
Palamós has the widest choice, with 11 models and a middle price of €400, and it sits in the middle of the coast, close to the coves around Calella de Palafrugell. Empuriabrava is the cheapest base: its six models all start between €200 and €307, a good fit for sailing boat hire on the Costa Brava on a tight budget, and the marina opens onto the Bay of Roses. Roses itself covers the whole range, from the Gouteron Ghibli at €86 to the Beneteau Sense 50 at €1,350, and it is the natural start for Cadaqués and Cap de Creus. El Port de la Selva puts the classic Mistral 33 and the Nauticat motorsailer right next to the cape. L'Escala and Platja d'Aro have only two boats each, but both pairs sit at the upper end, with a middle near €990 and €890. Pick the marina by the stretch of coast you want to see, then compare boats within it, as the trip back to base is part of every day afloat.
Weeks, season and comparable quotes
Day rates are only half the picture: many groups book a week, and the month changes the price of a week more than most model swaps.
Week rates through the season
A week on a sailboat out of Roses usually costs between €1,200 and €1,900 in April and May, between €1,800 and €2,800 in July and between €1,100 and €1,800 in October. Out of Palamós, weekly charters typically run between €1,000 and €1,900. Day rates for a boat without a skipper in Palamós average €240 to €500. The difference between a July week and an October week on the same coast can reach €1,000 at the top end. A group that can move its dates from high summer to spring or autumn keeps a large part of that difference.
A skippered day for a small group
A full day with a skipper, eight hours along the coast for groups of up to seven people, starts from €700. That sits above the median starting day rate of €399, but it includes a skipper, which the cheaper boats either add on top or require anyway. For seven people it comes to €100 each. A cheaper skippered option for a smaller group is the Siltala Nauticat 11 m: its skipper is mandatory and fuel is included in the €186 starting price, which for five guests is about €37 a head. If nobody in the group holds a title, compare this kind of day with the boats where the skipper is already included, such as the Jeanneau Sun Shine 38 from €286.
Four things to line up
Two quotes for the same model can differ widely, as the two Oceanis 40 boats show at €357 and €514. Line up four facts for each one before comparing: the unit and the hours, whether a skipper is optional, mandatory or included, whether fuel is part of the price, and the exact dates. A week in July and a week in October are different products even on the same boat. If a quote cannot answer all four, it is not yet a price. With those four facts side by side, sailing on the Costa Brava becomes a straightforward comparison of what each boat actually costs your group.
Key points before you choose a sailboat
Five figures to keep in mind
- Day rate: the 36 models start between €86 and €1,375 a day, with the middle at €399.
- Skipper: optional on 14 models, mandatory on 10 and already included on 6; ask about the other 6.
- Licence: only sailboats up to 6 metres need no title, and the shortest boat here is 6.6 metres.
- Berths: a boat for 12 guests by day may sleep 3, so plan nights from cabins and berths.
- Season: a week out of Roses runs €1,800–€2,800 in July against €1,100–€1,800 in October.
