The distintivo ambiental is the DGT sticker on the windscreen, and it decides whether you may enter the ZBE Rondes BCN on a working day. The one toll you are most likely to meet is the C-16, Túnels de Vallvidrera, on the way out towards Sant Cugat and the Vallès — €4.7 for a car. An SUV earns its keep on the roads out of town, and the destinations below are the ones our renters ask about most. Distances are short enough for a day trip and long enough to show what the car can do.

Day trips within reach of the city

• Sitges: 35 km south down the C-32, a coastal run of around 40 minutes that suits an evening swim and a late return.
• Montserrat: the mountain monastery sits roughly 60 km northwest; the last stretch climbs, and the 150 hp models pull it without strain.
• Costa Brava: the coves begin about 90 km northeast, past Blanes — a full day if you stop twice.
• Girona: the old town is 100 km up the AP-7, an easy morning out and back before the evening traffic builds.
• Tarragona and PortAventura: about 100 km southwest on the AP-7, the theme park car park is the simplest place to leave an SUV for the day.
• Penedès wine country: 45 km west along the C-15, where the roads between villages are narrow and a compact SUV is easier than a large one.

Longer routes into Catalonia and beyond

The Pyrenees and La Cerdanya are around 150 km north via the C-16, and the Túnels de Vallvidrera on the way out of the city charge €4.7 for a car. Andorra is a further 200 km up the same corridor. For these routes all-wheel drive matters more than horsepower: the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Seat Tarraco, Nissan X-Trail and Hyundai Santa Fe all list front-wheel or AWD/4x4 variants, and the Santa Fe pairs 215 hp with AWD as standard. Winter tyres are not compulsory in Spain by season — restrictions appear only on specific roads, sign by sign, when snow falls, which in practice means the mountain passes rather than the coast. If your route crosses into Andorra or France, tell the manager at booking: the territory permitted for the car is agreed in the rental agreement, and crossing a border without it arranged is not something to settle at the wheel.

What to plan before a long drive

Fuel on the motorway costs more than in town, and Spanish pumps label petrol as Gasolina 95, so a Petrol/LPG or Hybrid model keeps the fuel bill down on a 300 km day. Build in a stop every two hours — the DGT limits are 120 km/h on autopista and 90 km/h on ordinary rural roads, so a relaxed schedule is cheaper than a fast one.

What the agreement has to state

Spanish consumer rules say the advertised price must include every compulsory charge you cannot legally drive without, starting with the mandatory third-party cover. The same rules require that every scratch and dent be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive off, that both sides sign it, and that you keep a copy — otherwise damage found later lands on you. Read the damage sheet against the car before you move, and photograph nothing else — the signed sheet is what counts.

Cover that comes with every SUV

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory on any car legally on Spanish roads and is included by default, whether or not you buy anything extra. Under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025, the minimum sums are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage. Damage to the SUV itself is a separate matter: collision damage waiver, theft protection and their partial or full excess buy-outs are options, and none of them removes the excess unless the buy-out is bought.

Licence, passport and card — agreed when you book

If the plan includes the C-16 towards the Pyrenees or the Túnel del Cadí, the 4x4 and AWD versions of the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Jeep Compass, Nissan X-Trail or Hyundai Santa Fe are worth the extra: winter tyres are not a seasonal requirement in Spain, and mountain roads are restricted point by point, with signs and overhead boards, when snow actually falls.

Before you drive away

Walk the car with the person handing it over and get every scratch and dent written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you leave — both sides sign it and you keep a copy.
