What you need to drive legally in Thailand

Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, so the first week takes a little adjusting. A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, as required by section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act. Visitors from ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence without a permit.

Insurance and what the agreement covers

Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car. First-class insurance covers damage to the car itself — its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement, not fixed here. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so a week of driving means any camera penalty reaches you after the trip. VAT 7% is already included in the prices shown. Before you fix the dates, ask the manager which documents apply to your nationality — that one question settles the whole hand-over.

Tolls, parking and rules for weekly car rental in Bangkok

A week behind the wheel here means left-hand traffic, a right-hand-drive car, and a handful of paid expressways you will almost certainly use. None of it is complicated once you know the four things that actually cost money: expressway tolls, mall parking, the M-Flow camera system and the speed limits.

Tolls on the expressways

• EXAT expressways: Chaloem Maha Nakhon and Si Rat are the two city routes you will meet most often, and both take cash or a tag at the booths.
• Easy Pass and M-PASS: both cash and a tag work at the booths, and the two tags are interchangeable — but one car carries one tag, so check with us at hand-over which one is fitted.
• Motorway 7 to Pattaya: from Lat Krabang it is 25 ฿ to Bang Bo, 100 ฿ to Pong and 105 ฿ to Pattaya, with cash or a tag accepted at the payment points.
• Motorway 9 and Don Muang Tollway: the outer ring runs on M-Flow cameras with no barriers, guide figures 30–70 ฿; the tollway over Vibhavadi Rangsit Road is 28.1 km from Din Daeng to Don Mueang, guide figures 60–115 ฿.

M-Flow: the one thing to sort before you drive off

M-Flow has no barrier — a camera reads the plate and the bill follows. Without registration you have two days to pay by plate number through the M-Flow site, app, QR code, bank or ATM; from the third day the tariff doubles, then comes the tariff plus twice the tariff plus a penalty of ten times the tariff, and after that the case goes to court. So ask at hand-over whether a tag is linked to the car and how M-Flow charges are settled at the end of your week — it takes a minute and prevents a surprise on the final invoice.

Parking and speed limits

Mall parking is the easy part: CentralWorld gives two hours free, then 20 ฿ an hour, and 50 ฿ an hour after six; ICONSIAM gives two hours free, 30 ฿ for the third hour and 60 ฿ an hour after seven; Terminal 21 Asok gives three hours free, 20 ฿ an hour for hours four to six and 50 ฿ from the seventh; Central Bangna gives six hours free. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways and 110 km/h on the expressways. The Low Emission Zone does not touch you: it applies only to vehicles with six or more wheels — trucks and buses — on high PM2.5 days, while passenger cars and pickups are outside it.

Insurance and support during weekly car rental in Bangkok

A week-long hire runs on the same cover as any other booking: compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) comes with every registered car, and first-class (Class 1) cover protects the vehicle itself.
