Speed limits and the ZBE you may meet

Motorway limits are 120 km/h on AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33, and 90 km/h on carretera convencional such as GI-614, GI-682 and C-260. In town it drops sharply: 50 km/h on streets with two or more lanes each way, 30 km/h where there is one lane each way, and 20 km/h on single-platform streets where road and pavement are one level. If your route takes you into Girona, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been active since 15.09.2025, running 7:00–20:00 Monday to Friday on working days, from la Devesa to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. Cars without a DGT environmental badge and not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; cameras read plates, so there is nothing to display. Spanish rental fleets carry the badge, which means the zone is not a problem in a hired car. Build the local stretch into your timing, not just the distance.

Fuel, parking and what to check before you set off

Parking is where the coast bites: Girona's zona blava charges 1.20 EUR/h with a two-hour maximum on Monday to Saturday working hours, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, and Lloret de Mar's Can Lloranes car park takes 160 cars at roughly 15 EUR/day between 23 June and 11 September, free the rest of the year. Our cars leave with a full tank and come back full — full-to-full, lleno-lleno — and anything else is charged as set out in the rental agreement. Fill up before you return rather than hunting for a station in the last resort.

Licences and documents

• EU/EEA licences: valid in Spain for as long as they are in date; no international driving permit is required.
• Non-EU licences: DGT recommends getting an international driving permit before you travel and carrying it with your passport and national licence; six months after you take up residence in Spain, the national licence stops being valid.
• Licences not in Spanish: accepted if issued on the Appendix 9 model of the Geneva Convention or Appendix 6 of the Vienna Convention, or accompanied by an official certified translation.

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025, running 7–20 on working weekdays. Cars without a DGT environmental sticker that are not registered in Girona are the ones it restricts; Spanish fleets carry the sticker, so a hired car is not affected. Foreign plates can get a temporary authorisation if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements. If a route does take you into Girona, check the ZBE map before you set off — the cameras read plates, and you do not display the sticker.

Speeding fines under DGT's table run from €100 with no points to €600 with six; holding a phone while driving is €200 and six points, and seatbelts or child seats are €200 with four points. Child restraints (SRI) are compulsory for children under 135 cm. Alcohol limits are 0.25 mg/l of breath for most drivers and 0.15 mg/l for novices in their first two years and professional drivers, with anything above 0.60 mg/l becoming a criminal matter. Paying a fine within 20 calendar days cuts it by 50%.
