Every rate covers the car, its compulsory third-party cover and a full tank at hand-over. The Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is part of any hire in Spain by law, and our cars come clean with a full tank, returned full-to-full. What the daily figure does not contain is the rest of the paperwork: the deposit, the excess, delivery fees and any discounts are set out in the rental agreement. The same applies to the minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge and the territory you may drive in — all agreed when booking, not printed on this page. Three hybrids and three automatics sit inside our cheapest range — Fiat 500, Fiat Panda and Toyota Yaris Hybrid, plus Hyundai i10, Skoda Fabia and the Yaris. The 500 and the Panda are 1.0 L hybrids at €24 a day with 70 hp, the Yaris Hybrid is a 1.5 L 116 hp automatic at €30, the i10 is a 1.0 L automatic at €25 and the Fabia a 1.0 L 110 hp automatic at €28.

If the tank comes back short, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. The rate you pay covers the car itself and its compulsory third-party cover, Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, which Spanish law builds into every hire and which stays in force regardless of who is driving. Everything else — the deposit, the excess, any delivery fee and any discount — is printed in the agreement, not in the daily figure, so read the contract rather than the headline price.

What to check before you drive away

Spanish consumer rules are on your side here, and they are worth thirty seconds of your attention. Walk around the car with whoever hands it over and make sure every scratch and dent is written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you leave; both sides sign it and you keep a copy. Without that record, damage found later can be pinned on you. If the model you booked is not available, you are entitled to another car of the same class at no extra cost and to a higher class without paying more — and if the substitute is a lower class, the price should come down. If the vehicle does not match what the agreement says, you can cancel the booking and get your prepayment back.

Returning the car

The deposit is a pre-authorisation on the card agreed when booking, and its size is confirmed in the agreement rather than on this page. If you are catching a flight from GRO, build in the drive back — from Lloret de Mar the airport is 34.6 km and roughly 37 minutes by the C-63 and A-2, and from Roses it is 75.2 km and about 63 minutes along the AP-7 and C-260.

Most of our cheap car rental in Costa Brava fleet is manual, but automatic is available from €25 a day. Below is what each option actually costs, which models carry it, and where the difference is felt on the coastal roads.

Which cars in our fleet are manual

Manual is the default across our cheapest range, from the €22 group up to the Comfort models at €36 a day. The cheapest four — Citroen C1, Ford Ka+, Kia Picanto and Peugeot 108 — are all 1.0–1.2 L petrol manuals with 67–85 hp, and the mid-range follows the same pattern: Dacia Sandero, Fiat 500, Fiat Panda, Citroen C3, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Scala all come with a manual gearbox. The Comfort class is manual throughout — Skoda Scala, Ford Focus, Opel Astra and Renault Megane, 110–140 hp.

Which models come with an automatic gearbox

Automatic sits on three Economy models — Hyundai i10 at €25 a day, Skoda Fabia at €28 and Toyota Yaris Hybrid at €30 — all five seats except the i10, which takes four. Hyundai i10 runs a 1.0 L petrol with 67 hp, Skoda Fabia a 1.0 L with 110 hp, and the Yaris pairs a 1.5 L hybrid with 116 hp in the automatic version. The Yaris is the only hybrid in the automatic group; the other two hybrids in our fleet, Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda, are manual. Automatic starts at €25 a day against €22 for the cheapest manual, and the terms of a longer booking are set out in the rental agreement, because a week is priced as the daily rate times six and a month as the daily rate times 21. Book early for July and August, when Girona province records over two million hotel nights a month against 302,721 in November.

Manual or automatic on Costa Brava roads

Speed limits here are 120 km/h on the autopista and autovía — AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 — and 90 km/h on carretera convencional, which covers GI-614, GI-682 and C-260 on the way to the coast. The friction is elsewhere: Girona's zona blava charges €1.20 an hour with a two-hour maximum, so you park, walk, return and move the car repeatedly through a day of sightseeing, and an automatic removes the clutch work from that loop. If your route is airport, hotel and two or three coastal towns, a manual will do the job at the lowest daily rate on the page.

Both gearboxes are left-hand drive, as every car in our fleet is, and traffic drives on the right. Fuel is petrol or hybrid across the fleet, with no diesel option on this page, and the car is supplied with a full tank and returned full — full-to-full, or lleno-lleno in Spanish. A manual at €22 a day with a light right foot is the cheapest way to cover the 34.6 km from Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Lloret de Mar; the automatic is the easier pick when your days are built around parking and hill towns rather than motorway distance.

Cheap car rental in Costa Brava for a week of resort hopping

The Costa Brava is a coastline rather than a single resort, and the space between the towns is what shapes the hire. Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) sits inland at Vilobí d'Onyar, 34.6 km from Lloret de Mar and 75.2 km from Roses, so the car earns its keep on the first afternoon. Airport arrivals and the first drive

• Landing at GRO: the terminal is 12.5 km south-west of Girona, and the run down to Lloret de Mar takes 37 minutes by the C-63 and A-2.
• Landing at Barcelona-El Prat (BCN): travellers flying into the larger airport drive north to the coast in about 75 minutes without traffic, mostly on the C-32 and C-31.
• Arriving by rail: Girona station is on our delivery list, so the car can be waiting when you step off the train.

Moving between resorts mid-stay

Splitting a week between two or three towns works better with a car than with repeated transfers, because the luggage moves with you and the timetable is yours. The trade-off is parking: Lloret de Mar runs a 160-space car park at Can Lloranes at roughly €15 a day between 23 June and 11 September and free outside that window, plus a 200-space park-and-ride on Avinguda Alegries that is free for stays over 12 hours and includes a bus ticket into the centre.

Petrol 95 E5 averaged €1.94 a litre across the province of Girona in our last check, with 250 filling stations in the province and 58 along the coast, so the difference between filling up inland and on the seafront is small. Fill up before you reach the airport rather than hunting for a station after it — the last few kilometres are the ones people forget.
