In our experience the gearbox decides more bookings than the horsepower figure does: drivers who have never used a manual on the right-hand side of the road tend to switch to an automatic after the first junction, and French fleets are built around that habit. Pick the smallest engine that covers your longest planned drive, then confirm the gearbox on the model you actually want — the two are not interchangeable across the thirteen cars.

Petrol, diesel and what you will actually pay at the pump

Every crossover in this group takes gasoline or runs as a hybrid; none of the thirteen is diesel. For reference, SP95-E10 in France was priced at €2.183 per litre and Gazole at €2.414 per litre at the last reading, so the hybrid models are the ones that benefit most from city driving. The ZFE de la Métropole du Grand Paris (Zone à Faibles Émissions) restricts older vehicles, and the crossover class we hire sits comfortably inside the rules. Which Crit'Air classes are banned and which are clear

The périphérique speed limit and the carpool lane

• boulevard périphérique: 50 km/h since 1 October 2024, a decision of the Paris city hall, even though the Code de la route permits up to 70 km/h there.
• Phase-in: from 1 October 2024 on the inner ring between porte des Lilas and porte d'Orléans, and across the whole périphérique by 10 October.
• Carpool lane: the left lane between the Issy embankment and porte de Bercy, both directions, Monday to Friday 7:00–10:30 and 16:00–20:00, for cars carrying 2+ passengers.
• Penalty: 135 €, a contravention 4th class, enforced from 2 May 2025 under an experiment that began 3 March 2025.

The winter tyre rule that runs from 1 November to 31 March covers roughly 34 mountain departments and more than 4000 communes, and the capital and Île-de-France are not among them — so a crossover hired here needs no winter rubber for city driving. Street parking is charged by a progressive tariff, not by the hour, and the fuel you put in the tank is priced separately from the rental. The maximum continuous stay at one paid street bay is 6 hours, and the tariff is split into 15-minute increments, so you pay only for the time you actually occupy the space. Tolls: what costs money and what does not

• Boulevard périphérique: free to use, no péage barrier anywhere on the Paris ring road.
• City streets: free of tolls; your only parking cost is the bay tariff above.
• Duplex A86: the underground tunnel between Rueil-Malmaison, Vaucresson and Vélizy, around 10 km, run by Cofiroute/Vinci.
• Duplex A86 tariff: class 1 TTC, Rueil → Vélizy, Monday to Thursday between 8.30 and 13.70 € depending on the hour.
• Peak pricing: Friday and the eve of a public holiday, the same tunnel rises to 14.90 €.
• Péage en flux libre: barrier-free tolling on the A13 and A14, paid within 72 hours of the trip.

Fuel prices and the crossover advantage

Gazole (diesel) averages 2.414 € per litre across France and 2.44 € in the département of Paris, measured from the API data.economie.gouv.fr instant feed across 9,803 French stations and 48 in the department. SP95-E10, the standard petrol, sits at 2.183 € per litre nationally. None of our thirteen crossovers takes diesel: six run on gasoline and seven are hybrid, so SP95-E10 is the pump you will be looking for. The hybrid models — Fiat 500X, Ford Puma, Nissan Juke, Toyota Yaris Cross, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Opel Grandland and Cupra Formentor — recover energy under braking, which is exactly the stop-start pattern of central Paris traffic. In our experience the fuel policy is worth confirming before you drive off: ask the manager at booking whether the tank is plein-plein or settled by consumption, because the two produce very different bills at the end of a week.

Documents, insurance and the rental agreement for crossover hire in Paris

France requires third-party liability cover on every hire, and the agreement sets out exactly what is included, what the excess is and what you sign for. We agree the hand-over with you when you book, so nothing about the paperwork is decided at the last minute.

What you need to drive a crossover hire in Paris

• EU/EEA licence: valid in France with no time limit, and you do not exchange it for a French one while it stays valid.
• Non-EU/EEA licence, visitor: you may drive on your national licence; if it is not in Latin script, carry an official translation or an International Driving Permit alongside it — the IDP is a translation and never replaces the licence itself.
• Non-EU/EEA licence, resident: driving is allowed for 1 year from the entry date shown in your visa, after which the licence must be exchanged.
• Licence age: it must have been issued more than 1 year ago, and digital licences are not accepted by hire companies.
• IDP validity: the permit must be no older than 3 years.
• Minimum age and young-driver surcharge: agreed when booking, because France has no single national rule and each company sets its own.

Insurance on a crossover hire in Paris

• responsabilité civile: compulsory by law and included automatically in every booking; it covers injury and property damage to third parties within the country's legal limits, but not the driver's own injuries.
• CDW / collision damage protection: included in the basic package on the French market and limits your liability to the excess, covering repairs and the car's downtime.
• TW / theft protection: also in the basic package on the French market, covering theft, attempted theft and vandalism in a car park, again up to the excess.
• franchise (excess): a fixed sum you pay yourself after damage or theft; it is not waived and depends on the protection level you choose. The exact amount stands in the agreement for your booking.
• rachat de franchise: a paid option — Medium reduces the excess, Premium removes or substantially reduces it.
• Not covered by basic protection: tyres under abnormal use, glass except in a collision, sunroof and panoramic roof, the underside, misfuelling and the engine damage it causes, lost or stolen keys, and damage from negligence or intent.
• Card cover instead of buying the excess down: Visa Premier and Gold Mastercard often cover the CDW/TW excess if the booking was paid with that card and the holder is the main driver on the agreement — an industry practice, not an official bank document.

Hand-over and the agreement itself

Two things worth settling before you drive away: whether the fuel policy is plein-plein, so you return the tank as you took it, and whether kilométrage illimité applies to your booking, since an included kilometre limit is the alternative. Ask for the état des lieux at both ends — the walk-around record at collection and return is what the excess is later measured against.
