What documents a foreign visitor needs
- International Driving Permit: the 1949 Geneva Convention permit, required alongside your national licence under section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act; the police fine for driving without one is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim.
- ASEAN citizens: a national licence from an ASEAN country is enough, no International Driving Permit needed.
- Bank card: a card in the main driver's name, used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
- Age: the minimum driver age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 are set out in the rental agreement.
Insurance and the security hold
Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car we hand over. First-class insurance, Class 1, covers damage to the car itself — what it includes and the excess are set out in the rental agreement, not summarised at the kerb. The hold is easiest to settle in advance: if the card is in someone else's name, tell the manager before the car is confirmed, because the hold and the agreement have to match the driver.
Driving rules worth knowing before you set off
Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the first ten minutes in a BYD feel odd even to confident drivers. Speed limits run to 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 110 km/h on expressways and 120 km/h on the motorways.

Bring the passport, the home licence, the International Driving Permit where it applies and the bank card in the main driver's name — that set covers the whole hand-over.

What happens at hand-over
The rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB since 30 December 2025: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold, and the amount is set out in the agreement rather than quoted here. Bring your passport, your home driving licence and, unless you hold an ASEAN licence, an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so the agreement is worth reading before you drive away.

Toll charges, mall parking rules and the left-hand traffic pattern all shape how a BYD car rental in Bangkok is used, and none of them are complicated once you know the numbers.
How tolls work on the expressways
Cash and the Easy Pass or M-PASS tag both work at the booths on the EXAT urban expressways, which carry the Chaloem Maha Nakhon and Si Rat lines; the two tags are interchangeable, but one car carries one tag. Motorway 7 to Pattaya costs ฿25 from Lat Krabang to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya. Ask at hand-over whether the tag is linked to the car and how M-Flow camera bills are settled.
Parking in the malls and on the street
- CentralWorld: two hours free, then ฿20 an hour, rising to ฿50 an hour after six hours.
- ICONSIAM: two hours free, ฿30 for the third hour, ฿60 an hour after seven.
- Terminal 21 Asok: three hours free, ฿20 an hour for hours four to six, ฿50 from the seventh.
- Central Bangna: six hours free.
- Esplanade Ratchada, PARA Pinklao, Central Festival Eastville: free parking.
Traffic, speed limits and the Low Emission Zone
Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, including all three BYD models on this page. Urban limits are 80 km/h, 90 km/h outside built-up areas, 120 km/h on the motorways and 110 km/h on the expressways. The city's Low Emission Zone applies only to vehicles with six or more wheels during PM2.5 episodes, so a passenger BYD is not affected; EVs are also on the exemption list. Camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, which is why the agreement matters more than the sign.

Don Muang Tollway runs 28.1 km above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng to Don Mueang, with a guide figure of ฿60–฿115 for a passenger car.

Tolls, expressways and the M-Flow question
City expressways run by EXAT, including Chaloem Maha Nakhon and Si Rat, take cash or an Easy Pass or M-PASS tag; the two tags are interchangeable, but one car carries one tag. Motorway 7 to Pattaya has nine payment points and also accepts cash, M-PASS and Easy Pass. Motorway 9 uses M-Flow, which has no barrier — a camera reads the plate and the bill follows. Without registration you have two days to pay by plate number; from the third day the tariff doubles, and it escalates from there. Ask at hand-over whether a tag is fitted to the car and how the charge is settled.
