Which licence you need for a monthly contract
A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention; citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. The requirement sits in section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act, and the police fine for driving without a valid permit is ฿500–1,000 — an insurer may also refuse a claim after an incident. Check that the permit stays valid for the whole term, and renew it before you arrive.

Deposit, insurance and what the monthly car rental agreement sets out

Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car in our fleet, and first-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself. Por Ror Bor handles injury to third parties — it is the minimum the law requires of any vehicle on Thai roads, and it travels with the car rather than with the driver. Class 1 sits above it: this is the policy that responds when the car is damaged, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. The excess is the amount you carry yourself before the insurer steps in, so it is worth reading that clause before you sign rather than after an incident on Sukhumvit or Motorway 7. A monthly booking means you drive the same car through everyday traffic, not just a holiday route, so the local rules matter more than on a three-day hire. Here is what the road asks of you over a month.
Left-hand traffic and right-hand drive
Thailand drives on the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, so the driver sits on the right, nearer the centre line, and the gear lever falls under the left hand. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas — Pattaya City is named as a built-up area in the 1969 law — 90 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on Motorway 7, and a sign can lower the limit further. The fine reaches ฿1,000, though the receipt usually shows ฿500.
Tolls on Motorway 7 and Motorway 9
Motorway 7 runs Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya and onward to Map Ta Phut: 125.865 km, eight lanes, 120 km/h, with the whole Bangkok–Pattaya trip costing ฿105–฿130. Cars pay ฿25 at Lat Krabang and up to ฿105 at Pong, in cash (the lanes are usually on the left) or with M-PASS and Easy Pass on the blue lanes. Motorway 9 rings Bangkok and joins M7 at Thap Chang Interchange, which is the route in from Don Mueang and the west of the city; M9 is where M-Flow works without barriers, reading the plate by camera. If you would rather skip the charges, Hwy 34 Bang Na–Trat and Hwy 3 Sukhumvit through Bang Saen and Bang Phra reach the same place for nothing.
Fines, cameras and alcohol
Speed cameras on Motorway 7 enforce the 120 km/h limit, and a camera fine is issued to the car owner — the rental company — then re-invoiced to the renter. The alcohol threshold is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20, holders of temporary licences, drivers without a licence or on the wrong category, published in the Royal Gazette on 20 September 2024. Children under six need a TISI-standard child seat, and below 135 cm a belt or a special seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000. Park away from red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs. Ask the manager which conditions apply to your booking before you set off.

Hua Hin is the outlier — 321.1 km and about 229 minutes, a genuine overnight rather than a day trip.
