The island is small: a 51 km ring road joins the lowland and the coast and carries every resort — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut, Maenam. Most of what you need to know is road surface, fuel grade and one document in the glovebox.

What the ring road is actually like

In practice the surface hides potholes, sometimes deep ones, standing water after rain, and oil patches left by refuse trucks; animals wander onto the tarmac. The stretch worth planning around is mid-October to early December, when the island takes its heaviest rain of the year — flooded sections and slick asphalt.

Documents and limits you should know before you drive

• Licence: a foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act). ASEAN nationals drive on their national licence.
• Fine for driving without one: ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim.
• Alcohol: 50 mg% in blood; 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and for holders of temporary licences — up to 1 year in prison, a ฿5,000–20,000 fine, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least 6 months. Refusing the test counts as admitting it.
• Child seats: children under 6 ride in a TISI-standard seat; below 135 cm, a belt or a special seat — fine up to ฿2,000.
• Seat belts: every passenger, including the back row.
• Kerbside parking: no stopping at red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerbs.
• Tax sticker: the square blue hologram sticker on the windscreen shows the year in the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian + 543) and must be current on a rental car.

The two seasons that decide availability

The dry season runs February to April — the driest stretch of the year, with February at 64.3 mm of rain over 4.3 wet days and March at 115.8 mm over 4.7. October to December is the opposite: November alone brings 444.6 mm across 16.5 rainy days, the heaviest month on the island's 1991–2020 normals. July and August are not a monsoon here, so the summer crowds arrive too. This page lists 24 cars.
