Matching the hand-over to your arrival
GRO to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km and about 37 minutes, mostly on the C-63 and A-2; GRO to Roses is 75.2 km and 63 minutes on the AP-7 and C-260. BCN to Lloret de Mar is longer — 89.6 km, roughly 75 minutes without traffic.
Returning the Kia and the fuel rule
The car is supplied with a full tank and must come back with a full tank — full-to-full, or lleno-lleno as the Spanish term goes. Anything short of that is charged as the missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee, both set out in the rental agreement. Petrol 95 E5 in the province of Girona averaged 1.94 EUR a litre at the last check, so a fill before return is a small, predictable line in your budget.
Before you drive off, walk around the car with the person handing it over and get every scratch and dent written into the rental agreement or the inspection sheet — both sides sign it and you keep a copy. Without that record, damage found later is charged to you.

Tolls you will and will not pay
- AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole Girona — French border corridor, free since 01.09.2021.
- C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the run towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar, free since the barriers were removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
- C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: free since 01.09.2021.
- C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell): the only Generalitat tolls left (Vallcarca barrier 8.42 €, Cubelles 5.03 €, category 2) — neither is on a Costa Brava route.
Catalonia is discussing a return to charging for fast roads — a vignette or a pay-per-use scheme — but no decision has been taken. On our routes out to Lloret, Palafrugell, Roses and Cadaqués you currently pay nothing at a barrier.
The ZBE de Girona and where the car may go
The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025 and covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell. It runs 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days, and cameras read number plates — no sticker has to be shown. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted, with a 24-day-a-year allowance inside the restricted hours. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car from us is not affected.
Documents for a Kia car rental in Costa Brava
The paperwork is the one part of the booking nobody enjoys, so here is exactly what the licence, the ID and the card rule actually say in Spain — and which details are settled with a manager when you book.
Licences that work in Spain
- EU/EEA licences: valid in Spain as they stand until their expiry date — nothing extra to obtain, and no international driving permit is needed.
- Non-EU licences: valid for driving as a visitor, and the DGT recommends getting an international driving permit before the trip and carrying it together with your passport and your national licence.
- Six-month rule: after you take up ordinary residence in Spain, a non-EU licence stops being valid six months from that date, and you exchange it for a Spanish one.
- Permiso Internacional de Conducción: this document is never valid on its own — it is shown only alongside your passport and your national licence, and it runs for one year.
- Licences not in Spanish: valid either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if they were issued to the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.
- Passport or ID: rental companies ask for the original document in the main driver's name; there is no single DGT rule on this.
What we need from you at booking
We hand over a Kia from our fleet once the delivery address, the date and the time have been agreed with a manager. The minimum age for renting and any young-driver surcharge are also agreed when booking rather than assumed.
If you hold a non-EU licence, sort the international permit or the certified translation at home: the DGT recommends it.

The coast is the reason people come, but the best days out from it are inland and up the Cap de Creus peninsula. Distances stay short: from Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) it is 34.6 km to Lloret de Mar, 54.4 km to Palafrugell and 75.2 km to Roses.
Routes worth the fuel
- Cap de Creus loop: Cadaqués sits 89.4 km and 80 minutes from GRO; beyond it the road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus is closed to cars at set hours in season — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September, so check the calendar before you commit.
