Hiring a Smart Forfour here starts at €23 per day, and that single figure is the whole price list — one class, one model, no upgrade ladder to climb. A week is charged as six days at €138, a month as twenty-one days at €483, so the longer you keep the car the less each day costs you. Our prices are quoted in euro, and the amounts an agreement normally carries — the deposit, the insurance excess, any delivery fee and any discount — are not printed here because they are set out in the agreement once your booking is confirmed.

• Girona station: for arrivals by rail rather than by air, with the hand-over arranged at the address you give when booking.

Delivery beyond these towns is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site, so if your stay sits outside them, raise it with the manager first and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done.

What happens between booking and hand-over

You send us the dates, the address and the arrival time; a manager confirms the address, the date and the time and only then is the booking fixed.

If the tank is short on return, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement, so top up at the last station before the drop-off point.

Give the manager a two-hour window rather than an exact minute and the hand-over stays relaxed.

The ZBE in Girona and what it means for a hired car

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, and it operates 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted, and cameras read number plates — you do not display the sticker. There is a 24-day-per-year allowance inside restricted hours without a permit, and foreign plates can get a temporary authorisation if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car with the sticker faces no restriction at all.

Tolls, fuel and the routes you will actually drive

The AP-7 corridor from Vila-seca to La Jonquera — the whole run down to the French border — has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme between Montgat and Palafolls, the way up from the south toward Blanes and Lloret de Mar, went the same way with barriers removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021. The C-33 Montmeló link is also free. What remains tolled under the Generalitat is C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and C-32 south (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, with the Vallcarca barrier at €8.42 and Cubelles at €5.03, category 2) — neither sits on a Costa Brava route. Petrol 95 E5 averaged €1.94 a litre across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations; the coastal average was €1.956 across 58 stations.

Parking in the resorts

• Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13 and 16–20 (Sant Narcís runs different hours), at €1.20 per hour capped at two hours (€2.40).
• Girona, zona verda: non-residents pay the same €1.20 per hour for a maximum of two hours; Pedreres–Vista Alegre runs Monday to Friday 9:30–13 and 17–20 and Saturday 9:30–13, Güell–Devesa Monday to Saturday 8–20.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces, roughly €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September, free the rest of the year.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride: 200 spaces, free when you stay longer than 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre, 15 June–15 September.
• Lloret de Mar, zona blava: zone A (Tarradellas, Francesc Macià) runs all year on seasonal hours; zone C (Fenals, Canyelles, Boadella, Can Lloranes) only 23 June–11 September.

Insurance, documents and the rental agreement for smart car rental in Costa Brava

What you need to drive in Spain

• EU/EEA licence: fully valid in Spain as long as it has not expired, with nothing further required — no international permit is needed.
• Licence not in Spanish: valid either with an official sworn translation or if it was issued to the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention.
• International driving permit: a supplementary document only — it is shown together with your passport and your national licence, and it is valid for 1 year.

Insurance that comes with the car

Compulsory third-party cover is included in every rental by Spanish law and applies at all times, even if the person driving was not named in the agreement. It covers injury and damage to third parties, not the driver and not the car itself, and it carries statutory limits of 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR per incident for property damage. On top of that, CDW is a rental company option that removes your liability for damage to the car in a collision with another vehicle or an object, except for the excess — vandalism is excluded unless it happened while the car was in use. Theft protection works the same way for full or partial theft, and the excess itself is printed in the rental agreement whatever level of cover you take.

Driving rules and penalties worth knowing

Speed limits are 120 km/h on the autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 — and 90 km/h on conventional roads such as the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260. Speeding fines run from 100 EUR with no points to 600 EUR with 6 points, and exceeding the limit by more than 60 km/h in town or 80 km/h outside it becomes a criminal offence rather than an administrative one. The alcohol limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath for most drivers and 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years; above 0.60 mg/l it is a crime. Holding a phone while driving costs 200 EUR and 6 points, and a seat belt or child seat offence is 200 EUR and 4 points. Fines carry a 50% discount if paid within 20 calendar days, and the Girona low-emission zone — Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, in force since 15.09.2025 — restricts cars without a DGT environmental badge on working days from 07:00 to 20:00, Monday to Friday. Spanish rental fleets carry the badge, so a car booked through us is not restricted there.

Points that are agreed, not printed

The deposit, the excess amount, delivery fees and any discount are set out in the rental agreement. The minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge, the cards accepted and where you may take the car are agreed when booking. The car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank — lleno-lleno in Spain — otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.

The right call is a holiday built around moving between resorts on your own schedule, with a small car that fits the streets and a price you can work out in advance. Here is where our single model earns its place — and where it does not.

You are landing at Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO). The airport sits at Vilobí d'Onyar, 12.5 km south-west of Girona, and the run to Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km in about 37 minutes on the C-63 and A-2. We deliver the car to Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) for the Costa Brava, so the first hour of your trip is a drive, not a queue.

You want more than one resort in a week. The coast is a chain, and the distances only look short on paper. Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Roses is 75.2 km and about 63 minutes, mostly on the AP-7; the same airport to Cadaqués is 89.4 km and about 80 minutes, with 41.8 km of it on the AP-7 and 16.7 km on the GI-614. Both corridors have been toll-free since 01.09.2021, so those runs cost fuel and nothing else.

You are coming in from Barcelona. Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) to Lloret de Mar is 89.6 km and about 75 minutes without traffic, on the C-32, C-31 and B-10. The C-32 Maresme stretch had its barriers removed in the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021, and the C-33 has been toll-free since 01.09.2021.

You are staying somewhere with tight parking. Lloret de Mar's Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces at roughly €15 a day from 23 June to 11 September and free outside that window; the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride has 200 spaces, free for stays over 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre from 15 June to 15 September.

It is not the right call if you plan to stay inside one resort for a fortnight and walk everywhere.
