The hold is not a payment — it is released after the car comes back, so keep the card active for the whole trip and do not cancel it mid-trip. Budget for it separately from the price: the money stays on the card for the length of the trip, not for a day.

Seats, fuel and gearbox

Seat counts on this page run 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12, so a group of eight travelling together needs a different booking from four travellers with two large suitcases. Fuel is petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric; transmissions are automatic or manual. • Motorway 7: the Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya–Map Ta Phut route, 149.3 km long, with 125.865 km of it between the capital and Pattaya.
• Don Muang Tollway: 28.1 km above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, running from Din Daeng up to Don Mueang.

What the tolls cost

A short expressway hop usually lands between ฿50 and ฿100 for a passenger car. On Motorway 7 the four-wheel tariff from the Lat Krabang entry is ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya, and the whole run to Pattaya comes to roughly ฿105–฿130. Motorway 9 runs about ฿30–฿70, and the Don Muang Tollway about ฿60–฿115. These are guide figures from published sources rather than an official EXAT grid — treat them as a budget, not a bill.

Cash, Easy Pass and M-Flow

• Cash: still accepted at most booths, so keep small notes in the car.
• Easy Pass and M-PASS: interchangeable tags, but a car carries only one — ask at hand-over which tag is fitted.
• M-Flow: barrier-free on Motorway 9; the camera reads the plate and the bill follows. Without a registered tag you have two days to pay by plate number through the M-Flow site, app, QR code, bank or ATM. From the third day the tariff doubles, then tariff plus 2× plus a 10× tariff penalty, and after that court.
• Whose bill it is: ask at hand-over how an M-Flow charge is settled. Ask at hand-over whether the tag is linked and how unpaid tolls are settled.

One practical note: after a long flight, take the exit slowly, keep the change ready, and let the traffic behind you wait.

Insurance, fines and the rental agreement

Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. Damage to the car itself sits under first-class (Class 1) insurance, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement.

• Driving without an IDP: an insurer may refuse a claim, so the ฿500–1,000 police fine is the smaller part of the risk.

Fines and how they reach you

Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so a camera on Motorway 7 does not stop you at the barrier — it arrives later. The alcohol threshold is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences, and refusing a test counts as admission.

The rental agreement

Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. That single rule is why our own terms — the security hold, the excess, any delivery fee — are stated in the agreement rather than quoted as numbers here.

For a stay of a week or more, ask for the weekly or monthly rate in the first message — weekly is the daily rate times six and monthly is the daily rate times twenty-one, so the per-day figure drops without any separate discount code.
