The cheapest electric is the BYD Dolphin with a 44.9 kWh battery and 95 hp; the GWM Ora Good Cat steps up to 63.1 kWh and 143 hp at ฿900. The Nissan Leaf offers 40 kWh and 150 hp at ฿950, while the MG 4 Electric and MG ZS EV both sit at ฿1,000 and ฿1,100. For longer drives, the BYD Atto 3 (60.5 kWh) and GAC Aion Y (63.2 kWh) share 204 hp and ฿1,200, the BYD Seal reaches 82.5 kWh and 313 hp at ฿1,400, and the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 round out the range at ฿1,700 and ฿1,500.

The island's road network is compact, but the way it is built changes what you drive and how you drive it. Traffic keeps to the left and every car we hand over is right-hand drive, so the first few kilometres take deliberate attention.

Left-hand traffic and right-hand drive

Thailand drives on the left, and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive — the steering wheel sits on the right, the gear selector falls under your left hand. The island's main artery is a 51 km ring road connecting the lowland and the coast, and every resort sits on it: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut, Maenam.

• Flooded sections: standing water collects after heavy rain, and the worst window is mid-October to early December, the wettest stretch of the year.

Speed limits and the season

Built-up areas are limited to 80 km/h and roads outside them to 90 km/h; there are no motorways and no four-lane divided highways on the island. October is the wettest month at 294.9 mm across 15.8 rain days, and November peaks at 444.6 mm over 16.5 days, while February is the driest at 64.3 mm — the dry season runs February to April.

What to carry when picking up the keys

Drivers from ASEAN countries are the exception: a national licence is enough, with no permit and no conversion. For everyone else the fine for driving without the right documents runs ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident — which is the part that actually costs money.

A week or a month behind the wheel changes the arithmetic of a trip: the daily rate stops being the only number that matters, and the island stops being a set of separate beaches. Weekly and monthly rates for longer bookings

Weekly rates start at ฿4,500 and monthly rates start at ฿15,750, both calculated from the daily rate of the class you choose. The rule is simple: a week is charged as six days, a month as twenty-one days. Take the cheapest car on the page — the Suzuki Swift at ฿750 per day — and a week works out at ฿4,500, a month at ฿15,750. Move up to the Toyota Avanza at ฿1,200 per day and the same week is ฿7,200.

What a long stay on the island looks like

• Fuel: petrol stations on Koh Samui sell E20, 91 and 95, and most take cash only — a month of driving means planning stops rather than topping up whenever a card is handy.
• Season: the driest stretch is February to April, while October to December brings the heaviest rain and flooded stretches of road; a month booked in November drives differently from a month in March.

Insurance and hand-over in car rental in Koh Samui

Every registered car in Thailand carries compulsory motor insurance, called Por Ror Bor, which covers injury to third parties — it is attached to the vehicle, not to the driver, so it travels with the car whoever is behind the wheel. On top of that, first-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself. Read that part of the agreement before you drive off, not after.

• Licence and permit: a foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act); ASEAN citizens may drive on their national licence.
• Fine for driving without one: ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — so carry both documents in the car.
• Security hold: a bank card in the main driver's name is used for the hold; the amount is set out in the agreement.
• Age: minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.
• Roadworthiness: the tax disc is a square blue hologram on the glass, dated by the Buddhist year (Gregorian plus 543), and it has to be current on a hired vehicle.

How hand-over works

The agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB since 30 December 2025: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Our own hand-over is arranged when you book: the manager confirms the address, the date and the time, and the car arrives clean with a full tank. Where a condition is not fixed by Thai law — the deposit, the excess, any delivery fee — it is agreed when booking and written into the agreement, so ask before you confirm rather than assume.

Practical notes on car rental in Koh Samui

Fuel on the island comes in three grades at most stations — E20, 91 and 95 — and cash is the norm: card terminals are rare, so keep notes on you before you reach the pump. Muck trucks leave oil patches, and animals wander onto the tarmac. October to early December brings the heaviest rain of the year, so plan shorter hops then and build in slack.

A few habits keep a self-drive trip simple:

• Fuel: return the car with a full tank, as it was handed over.
• Parking: never leave the car at a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb; the penalty is set out in the rental agreement.
• Children: under six they need a TISI-standard child seat, and under 135 cm a belt or special seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000.
• Seatbelts: everyone wears one, back row included.
• Alcohol: the limit is 50 mg% for most drivers and 20 mg% for those under 20 or on temporary licences; refusing a test counts as admitting it.
• Documents: carry your passport, home licence and International Driving Permit — a police check without the permit costs ฿500–1,000 and an insurer may refuse a claim.
