A4 or A6, A3 or A4 — picking between the sedans and hatchbacks

The A3 Sportback is a 1.5 L petrol Premium hatchback at €68 per day; the A4 is a 2.0 L diesel sedan at €84, and the A6 is the same diesel layout with 204 hp for €93. Both the A4 and the A6 run 2.0 L diesel engines with 163 hp and 204 hp respectively, five seats, automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, so the step up in price buys output and cabin space rather than a different kind of car. The A3 Sportback carries five just as comfortably on short city hops, and at 1.5 L it burns less on the stop-start of central streets. In our experience, diesel A4, A6 and Q8 pay off on long motorway days, while petrol A1, A3 and A5 make more sense for city runs and short returns — the fuel bill at the pump is where the difference shows.

The A5 Cabriolet for a weekend and the R8 for a day

It is the cheapest way into open-top driving here, and four seats means two adults plus luggage fit without a second thought. The R8 V10 Plus sits at the other end — €936 per day, 5.2 L, 620 hp, all-wheel drive, two seats. It is the one car on this page that needs no luggage plan at all, because there is nowhere to put any. On a model like the R8, all-wheel drive reads as grip rather than drama on the city's dry ring roads. For a weekend, the A5 is the practical pick; for a single day, the R8 is the memory.

Weekly and monthly rates for an Audi

A week starts at €348 and a month at €1,218 — weekly is the daily rate times six, monthly is the daily rate times twenty-one. Longer bookings are agreed with a manager, so the class you want can be held for your dates instead of taken on the day. That matters most for the two-car classes: Premium holds the A3 Sportback and the A6, and Convertibles holds the A5 Cabriolet alone. If your dates are fixed, agree the model when booking.

Documents and licence rules for Audi car rental in Madrid

Whether you hold an EU licence or one issued outside Europe decides how much paperwork you carry to the hand-over. Spain applies the same rules to every hire car, so the checklist below is the one that matters before you take an Audi onto the M-30.

EU and EEA licences, and licences from outside the EU

An EU or EEA licence — including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway — is fully valid in Spain as it is until it expires, and no international permit is needed. A licence from outside the EEA is valid for driving here as a visitor if it is still in force and you are old enough in Spain for the equivalent category; once you take up ordinary residence, it works for no more than six months from that date, after which it must be exchanged through the canje procedure. The DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip. If your stay is a holiday rather than a move, the national licence plus your passport covers the whole booking.

Cyrillic and non-Latin licences — IDP or certified translation

A licence not in Latin script — Cyrillic, Arabic or characters — is valid in Spain only if it is written in Spanish, carries an official translation, or was issued on the Appendix 9 model of the Geneva Convention or the Appendix 6 model of the Vienna Convention. In practice that means an international driving permit or a certified translation, and the permit alone is never enough: the Permiso Internacional de Conducción is shown only together with the national licence and your passport, and runs for one year.

Minimum age and driving experience

You can drive in Spain from 18 for category B, but the minimum age for hiring, any young-driver surcharge and the experience condition are agreed when booking, not fixed by law. Our manager confirms them against the class you choose — the Q8 and the R8 V10 Plus sit in categories where the age floor is usually higher than for the A1 Sportback.

How Audi car rental in Madrid delivery and hand-over work

The Audi is delivered to you, not collected at a counter

Give the manager the address you actually need the car at, whether that is a hotel in Barrio de Salamanca, an apartment near Gran Vía or a meeting point by IFEMA MADRID, and the hand-over is arranged around that. The delivery point and any delivery fee are agreed when booking, so name the address at the time of the reservation rather than the day before. If your plans shift, tell us as early as you can — a delivery slot moved at short notice is harder to fit around the other bookings on the same day. For arrivals at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport or Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes, say so when you book, because the meeting point is part of the same conversation.

What the manager settles with you before the keys change hands

• Dates and times: the pick-up slot, the return slot and the address for each are confirmed in writing when booking.
• The car and its class: the model you chose is held for those dates, and any change of class is agreed before the agreement is drawn up.
• Deposit and insurance excess: both are set out in the rental agreement, never quoted as a figure before it is issued.
• Delivery fee: agreed when booking, together with the delivery point itself.
• Documents: bring the originals the manager asks for at booking — the conditions that apply to your licence are the ones confirmed then.

Handing the car back

The return works the same way in reverse: the address, the time and the fuel level on return are agreed when booking, and the car is collected from you there. Build a buffer into the last morning — traffic on the M-30 and the radial autovías into the centre is heaviest between 08:00 and 10:00, and a return slot missed by twenty minutes can push the collection into the next booking window. If your flight or train leaves from Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor or Atocha, tell the manager the departure time at booking so the collection is planned around it rather than after it. Anything you want changed about the hand-over — a different address, an earlier slot — is a booking conversation, not a roadside one.

Driving a rented Audi in Madrid with ZBE parking and tolls

Central Madrid is a low-emission zone by default, so the first question is not whether your Audi may enter but which environmental label it carries. ZBE Madrid (Zona de Bajas Emisiones de Madrid) covers all 21 districts of the municipality, and vehicles without a DGT environmental sticker — category A, meaning petrol cars registered before 2000 and diesels before 2005 — cannot enter.

What the ZBE means for a rental Audi

• ZBE Madrid (Zona de Bajas Emisiones de Madrid): the low-emission zone covering every street of the municipality, all 21 districts, not just the historic centre.
• Category A vehicles: petrol cars registered before 2000 and diesels before 2005 carry no DGT sticker and may not enter the zone.
• Distintivo ambiental: the DGT environmental sticker on the windscreen — 0 emisiones, ECO, C or B — is what the cameras read.
• Foreign plates: cars with foreign registration have no DGT sticker and must be registered in advance to be allowed in.
• Ordenanza 2/2026: the bylaw of 24.03.2026, transitional provision seven, in force from 00:00 on 07.04.2026, governs the current access regime.

Parking on the street and in the zone

• SER zona azul: the blue metered bays, maximum stay 4 hours.
• SER zona verde: the green bays, maximum stay 2 hours, reserved in practice for residents and their visitors.
• Hours: weekdays 09:00–21:00, Saturdays 09:00–15:00.
• 0 emisiones sticker: exempt from the parking charge.

Parking a five-metre Q8 or A6 in a blue bay is legal but tight — the A1 Sportback at 4.0 m and the A3 Sportback are the two that slot in without a second attempt.

Tolls and where they actually apply

The ring roads M-30, M-40, M-45 and M-50 and the radial motorways A-1 to A-6 cost nothing to use. The paid radial roads R-2, R-3 and R-4 are the exception, and they are the ones that save time on the northern and eastern approaches. Payment is by VIA-T transponder or at the barrier, and the transponder is not fitted to every car in the fleet — ask when you collect, or stay on the free rings.

Audi car rental in Madrid for day trips out of the city

Madrid sits in the middle of a ring of day-trip destinations, and an Audi makes short work of them. Toledo, Segovia, Ávila, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Aranjuez and Chinchón, the Sierra de Guadarrama and Alcalá de Henares all sit within a comfortable return drive. Which Audi suits which route

• Sierra de Guadarrama in the cold months: the Audi Q8, a 3.0 L diesel with 286 hp and all-wheel drive at €336 per day, is the one for mountain roads when DGT puts restrictions on cars without winter tyres or chains.

What to plan before you leave the city

Fuel is the first line in the budget. The city's own ring roads, the M-30, M-40, M-45 and M-50 and the radial A-1 to A-6, cost nothing to use, so the only tolls on a typical day trip are on the paid radials R-2, R-3 and R-4 if you choose them.

Parking at the far end is the other half of the plan. Toledo and Segovia both have regulated zones, and the blue SER zones in Madrid allow a maximum of four hours, the green ones two, from 09:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays.

A note from our own bookings

In our experience the day-trip Audis go out early — the A4 and A6 are usually the first diesel sedans reserved once the dates are fixed, and the A3 Sportback follows close behind for the shorter runs to El Escorial and Alcalá de Henares. If your trip falls on a weekend, tell the manager which route you have in mind when you book, so the class you want is held for those dates rather than the next one up.

Insurance, deposit and the rental agreement

Three things decide what an Audi actually costs you beyond the daily rate: the compulsory insurance that comes with every car, the excess you carry yourself, and the deposit blocked on your card. All three are set out in the agreement, and we go through them with you before you commit to anything.

Compulsory cover that is always on the car

Every car legally on a Spanish road carries Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, and it is included by default. The statutory minimums are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage (Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2, as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025). That cover protects third parties, not the car and not the driver.

CDW, THW and the excess

• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): partial release from liability for bodywork damage; you pay the excess, the company pays the rest.
• Excess (franquicia): the sum you cover yourself if the car is damaged; it is printed in the agreement whatever class of Audi you take.
• Zero-excess options: Super CDW, Zero Excess or Full Protection reduce the excess to nothing for a supplement.
• THW (Theft Protection): covers full or partial theft and vandalism damage, again minus the excess.
• Glass and tyres: usually outside the base CDW, so check whether you want them added.
• Deposit (preautorización): a hold placed on the main driver's credit card against damage and extras.

The excess amount, the deposit figure and the price of any zero-excess upgrade are set out in the agreement — we do not quote them as a number here, because they depend on the class and the dates.

What the agreement fixes before you drive

The excess, the fuel policy, the mileage allowance and the deposit hold are all agreed when booking, and they appear in the document you get with the car. If the Audi you booked is not available, Spanish consumer rules let you ask for another car at no extra cost — even a class above — or cancel and take your prepayment back if the substitute does not match the agreed conditions. Before you drive off, walk round the car and have every scratch and dent written into the hand-over record; both sides sign it and you keep a copy. Without that record, damage found later is charged to you. The same rule applies to the fuel level: note what the gauge reads on collection and return the Audi at the same level.

The deposit, the insurance excess, any delivery fee and any discount are set out in the rental agreement, so nothing on that side is a surprise at hand-over — read it when the manager sends it and ask about anything unclear before the delivery day. Fuel, the mileage allowance and the territory you may drive in are agreed when booking too, and they are worth settling in the same conversation rather than later. If your plans move, tell the manager as soon as you know: dates can usually be shifted while the car is still free, but a confirmed slot for a specific model is harder to replace at short notice.
