Electric Bikes on the Costa Brava: Day and Weekly Prices, Bike Types, Rules and Rides

Fleet manager
Published Updated

E-bike rental in Costa Brava starts from about €25 a day in high season, and a typical rate for one day on a quality electric road, gravel or mountain bike reaches €55. Book a full week and the same bike drops to around €43 a day. Below: how prices are built, which type of e-bike suits which ride, what the law asks of you, what deposit to expect and the routes where the motor makes the difference.

How electric bike hire works on this coast

An e-bike here is a bicycle with a battery and a motor that helps while you pedal. It needs no fuel, no registration and, as long as it stays within the pedal-assist rules, no driving licence. What changes from one offer to the next is the type of bike, the rental period and where you collect it.

Pedal assist, not a moped

The bikes on this page are pedal-assist bikes. The motor works only while the pedals turn and stops helping at 25 km/h; above that speed your legs do all the work. On the flat this feels like a light tailwind. On a climb out of a cove or up into the hills behind the coast, it is the difference between walking the bike and riding it. Most rental bikes have a small control on the handlebar with several assistance levels: a low level saves battery on long flat stretches, a high level is for the steep sections. Learn the controls before you leave the shop, because changing levels at the right moment is what makes the battery last the whole day.

Three types, all built for distance

Electric bike hire on the Costa Brava leans towards sport rather than city riding. The offers are mostly electric road bikes, electric gravel bikes and electric mountain bikes, the same three families as the classic bikes that cyclists come here to ride. Basket-and-mudguard city e-bikes are less common than in a big city. That shapes the price: the typical e-bike here is a performance machine, which is why a single day can cost more than a city e-bike costs elsewhere in Spain. Section three explains which type fits which plan.

Day, week or month

Rental is self-service: you collect the bike and ride on your own, not in a guided group. The standard unit is the day, and that is the unit most prices start from. Weekly and monthly terms exist for longer stays, and the weekly rate is where the real saving sits, as the next section shows. Hourly rentals barely feature in the market here. If you only want an hour or two, plan for a day rate anyway and use the rest of the day.

Where bikes are handed over

Most e-bike hire is based in Girona, the cycling capital of the region, a short way inland from the coast. Some rental shops there deliver bikes along the Costa Brava, which saves a trip inland if you are staying in a beach town. On the coast itself, Lloret de Mar has bike rental too. When you compare offers, ask for the pick-up address or the delivery fee together with the price: a cheaper bike that needs a return trip to Girona can cost more in the end than a dearer one delivered to your door.

Day rates, weekly rates and the deposit

The two price ranges below show what the market charges for an e-bike in the region. They are starting prices without dates; a quote for specific days, a specific frame size and extra accessories can be higher.

Market prices at a glance

What you rentUnitFromUp to
Road, gravel and e-bikes in high season, approximateper day€25€45
E-bike, lower daily rate on a 7-day rentalper day€43€55

The broad band of €25 to €45 a day covers road, gravel and electric bikes in high season. The second row is a single well-equipped e-bike: €55 for one day, €300 for seven days. Read the two rows together and the picture is clear. €25 is the floor of the market, while €55 for a single day is the price of a full-specification e-bike from a dedicated cycling shop.

One day against a full week

On the €55-a-day bike, a seven-day rental costs €300, which works out at about €43 a day. Seven separate days would cost €385, so the weekly rate saves €85, more than a day and a half of riding. If you plan to ride on five or six days of a week-long stay, ask for the weekly price anyway: at €300, a weekly rental becomes the cheaper option from the sixth day. For a month, ask for a quote directly, since monthly terms have no fixed price.

What the motor adds over a classic bike

In Girona, a classic road or gravel bike costs €50 for one day and €260 for seven days, against €55 and €300 for the e-bike. On one day the motor adds only €5. Over a week it adds €40, about €6 a day. A classic mountain bike in Girona costs €40 for one day and €195 for a week, so an e-bike is €15 dearer for a single day. In high season the general bands tell the same story: €15 to €30 a day for city bikes, €25 to €45 for road, gravel and electric bikes. On this coast the e-bike is priced with the sport bikes, not far above them.

The deposit and what lowers it

Expect a security deposit on every rental. One Girona shop asks €500 for road, gravel and electric bikes and €300 for mountain and trekking bikes. The same shop offers optional accident cover for €8 a day, which cuts the deposit to €100 for any category. On a one-week e-bike rental the cover adds €56; whether that is worth it depends on how much you want tied up on your card while you ride. Ask in which form the deposit is held, card block or cash, and when it is released after the return.

Road, gravel or mountain: choosing the type

The type of bike decides where you can ride comfortably far more than the brand does. Choose it by the surface you plan to ride on, then by distance.

Electric road bike

An electric road bike has drop handlebars, narrow tyres and a light frame. It is the fastest of the three on tarmac and the one to choose for long rides on the coast road and the quiet country roads inland. The motor flattens the climbs, so a rider who would not attempt a hilly loop on a classic road bike can ride it with a group of stronger cyclists. It is the wrong choice for gravel paths or forest tracks: narrow tyres slip on loose ground and puncture more easily.

Electric gravel bike

An electric gravel bike combines a road-style riding position with wider, grippier tyres. It rides well on tarmac and is equally at home on packed dirt and gravel. For a visitor who wants one bike for everything, from the coast road to the old railway lines turned into cycle paths, the gravel bike is the most versatile option. It is slightly slower than a road bike on smooth asphalt, which matters little when a motor is helping.

Electric mountain bike and battery range

An electric mountain bike has flat handlebars, suspension and wide knobbly tyres. It is the bike for forest trails in the hills behind the coast and for rough tracks down to the coves. One electric mountain bike offered in Lloret de Mar is rated for a range of 50 to 60 km on a charge. Treat that as a guide for planning, not a promise: hills, rider weight and a high assistance level all shorten it. A day ride on an e-MTB should stay within that distance with a reserve, or include a stop where you can charge.

Battery, charger and frame size

Whatever the type, three questions decide whether the bike suits you. How far does the battery last at a normal assistance level? Does a charger come with a multi-day rental, so you can charge at your accommodation overnight? Which frame sizes are available? A performance bike in the wrong size is uncomfortable after an hour, so give your height when you ask for a quote, and for a family make sure smaller sizes are available for every rider.

Licence, helmet and documents

The legal side of an e-bike is far simpler than that of anything with an engine. Most rules are the rules for ordinary cyclists.

No driving licence for pedal assist

Across the European Union, a bike whose motor helps only while you pedal, cuts out at 25 km/h and has a rated power of up to 250 watts counts as a bicycle. In Spain that means no driving licence, no registration plate and no road tax. Rental e-bikes are built to that standard. Electric bikes with a throttle or with assistance above 25 km/h fall into a different category, closer to a moped, and are not what this page covers.

Helmet: compulsory outside towns

A helmet is compulsory for cyclists on interurban roads regardless of age, and in town it is mandatory only for riders under 16. On this coast that rule matters more than in a city: almost every e-bike ride leaves the town limits within minutes, whether along the coast road, inland towards Girona or up into the hills. In practice, every adult riding an e-bike out of town needs a helmet. Ask whether a helmet is included in the price and whether it comes in your size and in children's sizes.

Documents and deposit

The rental itself has conditions of its own. Expect to show an identity document or passport and to leave a deposit, which can be as high as €500 for an electric bike, as section two explains. Check the minimum age in the rental terms before booking for teenagers, since each shop sets its own.

On the road

Where there is a cycle path, use it; where there is none, ride on the road and keep to the right. Pavements are for pedestrians unless signs mark them as shared. Earphones and a phone in the hand are not allowed while riding, and the alcohol limits for drivers apply to cyclists too. Lock the bike to a fixed rack, and take the battery with you if it is removable when you stop for lunch: an e-bike left with its battery is an easy target.

Rides where the motor pays for itself

The Costa Brava is rarely flat. Coves sit at the bottom of steep roads, and the coast is backed by hills. That relief is the main reason to choose an e-bike over a classic one.

Girona and the greenways

Girona is the natural starting point because most bikes are collected there. From the city, former railway lines converted into cycle paths, the Carrilet routes, run towards the coast at Sant Feliu de Guíxols and inland towards Olot, and the Pirinexus route links the region with the French border. Their gradients are gentle and they suit any type of e-bike, though an e-gravel or e-MTB is more comfortable on the unpaved sections. With pedal assist, a rider can go further along these routes than on a classic bike and still have energy for the return.

The coast road

The winding road between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guíxols climbs and drops along the cliffs, with sea views at nearly every bend. It is a classic ride for road cyclists and a demanding one on a classic bike. On an electric road bike it becomes a long, steady ride with time for viewpoints. Ride it early in the morning in summer, before traffic builds, and wear a helmet: it is an interurban road from start to finish.

Hills behind the coast and the north

Inland from the beaches, the Gavarres massif offers forest tracks and quiet roads between villages, which is e-MTB and e-gravel country. Further north, the area around Roses and the Cap de Creus peninsula has rough, rocky terrain where an electric mountain bike earns its price. On these rides, watch the battery: plan routes within the stated range with a reserve, and turn back at half your charge if you are not sure where the next climb lies.

E-bike, bicycle, scooter or motorcycle

The e-bike sits between the classic bicycle and the motor scooter. The table shows where each two-wheeler starts and what it asks of the rider.

Starting prices by vehicle

VehicleFromUnitWhat you need
Bicycle€20per dayHelmet out of town
E-bike€25per dayHelmet out of town
Scooter€24.77per dayAM licence or car licence for 50 cc; A1, or a car licence held 3 years, for 125 cc
Motorcycle€22.30per dayMotorcycle licence (A2 or A for bigger machines)

When a classic bicycle is enough

A classic mountain bike starts from €20 a day on a rental of three days or more, and a road or gravel bike costs €50 for one day in Girona. For a flat ride along a greenway, or for a strong cyclist who wants the full effort of the climbs, a classic bike does the job. Choose the e-bike when the plan includes the coast road, the Gavarres hills or simply a long distance in summer heat, or when riders of different fitness want to ride together.

When a scooter makes more sense

A scooter starts from €24.77 a day, about the same as an e-bike, but asks more of the rider. A 50 cc moped needs an AM licence, available from 15, or a car licence; a 125 cc scooter needs an A1 licence or a Spanish or EU car licence held for at least three years. Rental in Girona starts at 18 with a deposit of €200 to €300. A scooter carries two people and needs no effort, which suits beach-hopping between towns. An e-bike needs no licence and can use cycle paths and greenways closed to motor traffic.

When a motorcycle is the tool

Motorcycles start from €22.30 a day, but anything above 125 cc requires an A2 or A licence, and riders with a non-EU licence should bring an International Driving Permit. Offers can include a mileage limit of 150 km a day with €0.35 for each extra kilometre, and a deposit of €300 with a minimum age of 18. A motorcycle is for touring the Pyrenean foothills and the length of the coast in a day; for the coves, greenways and village tracks, the e-bike is the simpler choice.

Before you book

Seven checks turn a list of e-bike offers into a fair comparison.

Seven checks for any e-bike quote

  • Type: road for tarmac, gravel for mixed surfaces and greenways, mountain for forest tracks and rough coastal paths.
  • Period: from the sixth day, a weekly rate is usually cheaper than paying day by day; on a €55-a-day bike, a week costs €300.
  • Range and charger: ask how far the battery lasts on a normal setting and whether a charger comes with a multi-day rental.
  • Frame size: give the height of every rider, including children.
  • Helmet and lock: check that both are in the price; a helmet is compulsory on every interurban road.
  • Pick-up or delivery: confirm the address in Girona or on the coast, the delivery fee and the opening hours.
  • Deposit and documents: ask the amount, up to €500 for an electric bike, whether optional cover reduces it, and which identity document the renter needs.

FAQ

How much does e-bike rental cost on the Costa Brava?

In high season, road, gravel and electric bikes typically cost €25 to €45 a day. A well-equipped e-bike from a dedicated cycling shop costs €55 for one day. These are starting prices without dates, so a quote for specific days and a specific size can be higher.

Is it cheaper to rent an e-bike for a week?

Yes. On a bike that costs €55 for one day, seven days cost €300, about €43 a day. Seven separate days would come to €385, so the weekly rate saves €85 and becomes the cheaper option from the sixth day of riding.

How much more does an e-bike cost than a classic bike?

Less than you might expect. In Girona a classic road or gravel bike costs €50 for one day and €260 for a week, against €55 and €300 for the e-bike. A classic mountain bike costs €40 for one day, €15 less than the e-bike.

Do I need a driving licence to ride an e-bike in Spain?

No, as long as it is a pedal-assist bike: the motor helps only while you pedal, stops at 25 km/h and has a rated power of up to 250 watts. Such a bike counts as a bicycle, with no licence, plate or road tax. Faster e-bikes with a throttle are a different category.

Is a helmet compulsory on an e-bike?

A helmet is compulsory for all cyclists on interurban roads, whatever their age, and in town for riders under 16. Most e-bike rides on the Costa Brava leave town quickly, so in practice every rider needs a helmet. Check that one in your size is included.

What deposit do I need for an e-bike?

Expect a security deposit on every rental. One Girona shop takes €500 for road, gravel and electric bikes; with optional accident cover at €8 a day, the deposit drops to €100. You will also need an identity document or passport.

Which type of e-bike should I choose?

Choose by surface. An electric road bike is for tarmac and the coast road, an electric gravel bike for mixed surfaces and the greenways, and an electric mountain bike for forest tracks and rough coastal paths. If you want one bike for everything, the gravel bike is the most versatile.

How far can I ride on one battery?

It depends on the bike, the terrain and the assistance level. One electric mountain bike offered on the coast is rated for 50 to 60 km on a charge. Plan day rides within the stated range with a reserve, and ask for a charger on multi-day rentals.

Where can I pick up an e-bike on the Costa Brava?

Most e-bike hire is based in Girona, and some shops there deliver along the coast. Lloret de Mar also has bike rental. Ask for the pick-up address or delivery fee together with the price, as well as the opening hours.
